Kelli, returning from her army tour of duty in the centre East, has high hopes with regard to resuming her old lifestyle in her midwestern home town. Her hopes are little by little dashed as her relationships with her relatives and buddies suffer; they have moved in, and she cannot adapt. She is unable to deliver the attention her little ones need, she quits her boring factory job, she discovers her hubby Mike’s infidelity, drinks with her pals, then is stopped with the police while driving intoxicated. During her court-ordered remedy session, she meets Bud, a charming war experienced. She undergoes a slow breakdown, but persists in the woman efforts to reestablish the girl life.
Return is an unbiased film about an American reservist, wife and mother returning home from her tour of duty in the center East. The film was composed and directed by Liza Manley, and stars Linda Cardellini, Michael Shannon and David Slattery. It is Johnson’s initial feature length film, and received good critiques at its premiere in the Cannes Film Festival Director’s Fortnight.
Johnson explains that her impetus to start out the project came by “talking to my man friend about his encounters. It was through chatting with him about his / her divorce and stuff, that was sort regarding my first point associated with interest. He introduced me to several his colleagues. Through him and by means of other means, I did meet a lot of women soldiers. We did a great deal of research with women who’ve been deployed. Linda [Cardellini] did her own research in LA for the VA hospital, through other contacts along with friends. ”
Johnson was selected to go to the 2008 Sundance Commence Feature Film Program, where some scenes intended for Return were workshopped. The film project was also selected for your International Film Festival Rotterdam CineMart inside 2008, which connects filmmakers along with co-production and film entrepreneurs. Following the Sundance Science lab program, she was awarded the Adrienne Shelly Women Filmmakers Give for production of Give back, and in 2010 received a grant from video philanthropic group Cinereach.
In 2010, Johnson said, “Over the summer, we decided to proceed the production upstate [New York] inside Newburgh, Beacon, and New Windsor. That area reminds me use many of the town where I spent my youth, an Ohio river town that is greatly affected by the particular economy. ” “On our last day in the shoot in Newburgh, a water main broke plus the water started coming out brown. We looked around and it also seemed like a sign that we shot in the right place. ” The film was shot in Super sixteen, distributed in DCP, and is the 1st feature film production pertaining to Meredith Vieira Productions.
Return was the sole U. S. film selected for the 25-film 2011 Cannes Movie Festival Director’s Fortnight. Following its premiere with the festival, Boston Globe reviewer Wesley Morris authored, “I like Johnson’s goody and discretion. She trusts Cardellini’s organic, easygoing performance to indicate us what goes lots of. The movie is moderate, too, and its small mental scale works.
