Cameron Diaz is the U.G.L.Y. celebrity of 2005. This most prestigious honor was bestowed upon her by the board of Hey U.G.L.Y., Inc. NFP, the teen self-esteem building 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.
Cameronâs article in the April 2005 issue of Vogue magazine cinched the vote. In the article she inspires teens to be happy with who they are instead of worrying about what other people think. She begins the article by saying … âAll my life Iâve wanted to be a fleshy, voluptuous woman — the kind that burst out of her clothing, displaying her wealth of femininity. But no matter how many times I stared at the Victoriaâs Secret catalog wishing I had that little pillow of flesh around my belly button, no matter how many bean burritos with extra cheese I ate … even as a child I knew it was not my destiny. There was no denying it: I was not just skinny but bony.â Cameron recounts being called names like âSkeletorâ and âBonesâ when she was in high school.
âThe trauma and stress of being called names, of being bullied, is one of the many challenges of adolescence and one Hey U.G.L.Y. strives to help teens better manage,â explained Leni Kass, co-founder of the charity. Research suggests that six out of 10 American teens witness bullying at least once a day and harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school-shooting incidents. âU.G.L.Y. is an acronym meaning Unique Gifted Lovable You, and it exemplifies taking a negative and turning it into a positive, one of the lessons we teach in our acronym contests. Last year we asked teens to come up with positive acronyms for the words, Dork, Stupid and Loser. The entries were inspiring.â
Cameron ends her article by explaining to teens the importance of loving yourself. She writes: âWe all come in different shapes and sizes, and the grass is always greener on the other side — two clichés that, like most clichés, happen to be true. Thatâs the thing about this conversation; it always ends up in the same place. We are all different, and we all wish we had something other than what we have. What we women need to do, instead of worrying about what we donât have, is just love what we do have. Get to know your body. Love it, respect it, treat it right. And in return youâll be happier with you.â
Cameron Diaz was selected from hundreds of celebrities whose self-esteem building statements are displayed on the Celebrity Quotes page of http://www.heyugly.org. âThe Celebrity Quotes page is everyoneâs favorite,â said Betty Hoeffner, President and co-founder of Hey U.G.L.Y. âTeens report feeling better knowing that celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher, Vince Vaughn, Halle Berry, Ryan Cabrera and so many more, struggle with some of the same self-esteem issues they do.â
Hey U.G.L.Y.âs goal is to give teens the tools they need to never feel âless thanâ through their M-POWER self-esteem building curriculum available to middle and high schools across the country.

An online magazine has been receiving a lot of buzz among young Latter-Day Saint women. Teens and young adults alike are excited when they stumble onto JenMagazine.com and find something that fills a need that has long gone unfulfilled. Jennifer Loch, founder of Jen Magazine talks about the inspiration behind it:
“Growing up as an LDS teenager, I loved fashion and one of the things I liked to do in my spare time was read the fashion and lifestyle magazines that are popular among teen and young adult women. Many of the images, articles and opinions found in these magazines glamorized things that were opposed to my religious beliefs, and I often found myself wishing to go against my beliefs in order to be as glamorous and ‘cool’ as the people in these magazines seemed. I feel that over the years these popular magazines had a negative influence on my life as they influenced my values to be more aligned with those of the world and less aligned with my religious beliefs.
“Later after I got married I was struck with the idea of creating a magazine for girls like me–with fashionable modest clothing ideas for those who are interested in being in style without compromising their standards and with fun articles, tips, news and reviews that are more in line with the interests and lifestyle of a Latter-Day Saint.
“At first the idea was to start a printed magazine, but being young with no capital and no experience in how to go about starting a magazine, I felt it would take many years to develop and carry out something like that. I knew that this magazine was needed now and I didnât want it to be one of those ideas that just sits on the shelf. I decided to put the idea of a printed magazine on hold and start with something more manageable: an online magazine.”
Jen Magazine contains the same kind of articles you would find in the popular womenâs magazines except that they match the values of the Latter-Day Saints (and most other Christian denominations). There are articles of a spiritual nature alongside reviews of popular movies, advice columns, beauty and fitness articles, and of course seasonal fashion picks including modest swimwear suggestions since spring is almost here.
Loch says âIn my younger years, my choices in other types of media such as music and television also exerted a negative influence on me. Thatâs why at Jen Magazine we offer realistic media alternatives for people with young tastes. For example, our music section is full of links to clean hip-hop, pop, rock, etc. that most young people would actually listen to.â
While Jen Magazine is specifically geared toward LDS young women, it is frequented by members of many Christian denominations as a fun and useful resource that reinforces Christian values. One of the things readers say they appreciate most about the “magazine” is that it helps them remember that contrary to how it may sometimes seem, there are many girls all over the world who share their beliefs, convictions and concerns.
With an online magazine comes a benefit that most printed magazines donât offer; Jen Magazine is available to anyone for free just by going to JenMagazine.com. Since it isnât published monthly like a printed magazine, Jen Magazine is updated throughout the month and visitors will often find new articles daily.
