Warehousing Consumers’ Online Travels To Catch Child Predators and Terrorists: Privacy Implications? (Part 2 of 2) October 5, 2006 Expected legislation in Congress would require Web sites and Internet service providers to retain the records of their customers’ online activities for a period of time — often referred to as “data retention.” Law enforcement officials, including the Department of Justice and most state attorneys general, are proponents of such data warehousing to aid in law enforcement attempts to apprehend terrorists and child predators. Many privacy advocates oppose legislation because of the potential risks associated with unauthorized persons gaining easy access to logs of consumers’ personal information or potential for misuse of information by the government. This panel explored the privacy and security implications of a legislative mandate to retain logs of consumers’ online travels in central databases. Panelists included: Jim Halpert, DLA Piper, David Sobel, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Jim Harper, The Cato Institute, and Tim Lordan (moderator), Internet Caucus Advisory Committee. This event was part of a three part panel series titled Legislating Online Child Safety. This briefing series was hosted by the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee on legislative proposals to protect children while online. Policymakers put forward several proposals to mandate online safety and security for children and teens. This three-part panel

Meet a Scientologist—Annalisa Tosoni: A Search for Meaning in Life Fulfilled

Meet a Scientologist—Annalisa Tosoni: A Search for Meaning in Life Fulfilled

Opened in 2010, the school in the village of Twewaa, Ghana, is providing education for the first time to the children of the region. (Annalisa Tosoni, front center.)

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 10, 2011

At age 16, Annalisa Tosoni’s youth came to an abrupt end. At the center of her world was “the best dad anyone could ever have.” When he died, so did her childhood and her happiness.

“I could not understand why it happened,” says Tosoni. “Nothing people told me made any sense. I needed answers to questions I had never thought to ask before: Who are we really? Why are we here? And why him?”

Tosoni’s father had lived life to the fullest, and it didn’t make sense to her that one moment he was so much there and the next minute he was gone.

“I wanted to know where we go after our bodies die, and what is the purpose of life,” she says.

Tosoni’s search extended beyond her own personal sorrow to questions such as—Why do people have to suffer? Why are we here? Why are some rich, some poor? Why are there children who are hungry every day of their lives? Why is there violence, injustice, crime?”

“After my father passed away, my mother was incredible,” says Tosoni. “She raised my sister, who was only 8, and me with courage and strength. But from that point forward, I was ‘the sad one’—never happy. And never satisfied.”

Tosoni graduated from school at 19 with an excellent education but no anchor—she drifted from job to job, looking for she knew not what and never finding it, until learning about Scientology in 1992 when she was 30.

“I took a job traveling with a couple from Lugano, Switzerland, looking after their 2 year-old daughter while the family vacationed and received religious service at the Church of Scientology in Copenhagen, Denmark. “I knew nothing about Scientology, but one day I walked into the Church with the family and I was amazed. The people there were incredibly alive and welcoming—they communicated so freely among themselves and to me. I was impressed and wanted to find out more.”

All the questions Tosoni had stored up since her father’s sudden death came tumbling out, and one by one they were answered. For the first time in 14 years, she was smiling again.

And when she looked for answers to helping others, she found those too.

“Through Scientology I have learned a technology of help, and found a group that shares my beliefs and commitment to making life better for others.”

After resolving her personal issues, Tosoni, now 49, found it a natural progression to become a staff member of the Church of Scientology of Milan, Italy, where her own beliefs were echoed in the Creed of the Church of Scientology, written by L. Ron Hubbard: “We of the Church believe: That all men of whatever race, color or creed were created with equal rights.”

“We live this creed with our humanitarian projects,” she says.

Tosoni coordinates the human rights activities of the Church in Milan. For the past nine years she has organized annual charitable concerts to commemorate the December 1948 adoption of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, funding initiatives such as care for the elderly, the Croce Giallo-Azzurra (Blue and Yellow Cross) Civil Protection volunteers, and UNITED for Africa, a project supported by the Church and the Association for Human Rights and Tolerance of Italy.

Tosoni’s human rights activities often focus on children. Through UNITED for Africa she helped fund and build two schools in Ghana, including one in the village of Twewaa that is providing education for the first time to the children of the region.

“Nowhere are human rights more important than when it comes to children,” says Tosoni. “It is vital for people of all faiths and walks of life to take responsibility for the welfare and education of the next generation, protect them from abuse and instill in them respect for themselves, for diversity, and the rights of others.”

A Valentine’s Gift For Your Kids – How to Turn Tantrums into a Deeper Love Connection With Your Kids

Tantrums 911 Mobile App

Marina del Rey, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

Valentine’s day is here and at this time of year we don’t usually like to focus on the negatives in our relationships with our loved ones, but at some point in time every parent usually says (or at least thinks) “My kids are driving me crazy!” or they are embarrassed, again, when in public, or with friends or family, their little (or not so little) one has a “temper tantrum.”

Wouldn’t it be great to feel cool, calm and collected and even loving when faced with a tantrum? And what’s more, what if as a Valentine’s day present to you (and your kids) you could stop tantrums or even prevent them?

Tantrums 911 expert, Valerie Jampolsky, reveals to parents five easy steps to never let a tantrum unravel them again and how, for Valentine’s day and beyond, to transform a tantrum into a love fest, a happier, deeper love connection with their kids without “giving up” or “giving in”.

Here are 5 tips that I offer parents to transform their kids’ tantrums into a deeper loving connection with their kids:

1.    Put on Your Oxygen Mask First: Before saying anything to your child, take a couple deep breaths and give yourself some self-empathy in the moment (e.g., “I’m really frustrated, I really need things to be easier”) and remind yourself of your overall parenting goals of connection, trust, mutual giving, instead of resentment, judgment and rebellion (i.e., when you’re not looking, or as teenagers, even when you are looking!)

2.    Be a Video Camera, Not a Prosecuting Attorney: Observe what your child is doing as if you are a video camera, without judgment or creating enemy images of your child.

3.    Look Under the Tip of the Iceberg with an Open Heart: Lovingly ask questions (not interrogate) to find out what is the real underlying need that your child is trying to meet (i.e., don’t focus on the current strategy/behavior) until your child “gets” that you “get” their needs without judgment”: Are you feeling (x) because you need (y)?”

4.    Brainstorm Solutions Together: Ask if your child is willing to hear your needs and brainstorm solutions together to meet both your needs. For preverbal kids, invite fun alternatives to meet their needs that also meets your needs or sometimes, just connecting so they “get” that you “get” and support their needs is enough (more on how to do that in the Tantrums 911 App coming soon!).

5.    Open Eyes, Open Arms Open Heart: A Preventative measure: Be there with open eyes, open arms and open heart, when your kids come to you and practice these same skills when there is no crisis (I.e., share their joy of meeting a need) (e.g., “Wow! You built a big tower of blocks! Was that fun?).

Valerie Jampolsky is a single parent of two amazing twin boys, a child and family therapist, an entertainment attorney and the creator of the App, Tantrums 911 available next week for iPhones and iPads and coming soon for Android phones. See http://www.tantrums911.com for more info.

Tantrums 911 is based on Valerie Jampolsky’s program, “Parenting 911: Open Hearted Parenting,” (http://www.parentinghelpnow.com) which is based on Marshall Rosenberg’s NVC teachings which have been helping families worldwide transform their relationships with their kids For Over 40 Years!

The Latest Facet of Tutor and Mentor Training: Helping Children Confront Cyberbullying

The Latest Facet of Tutor and Mentor Training: Helping Children Confront Cyberbullying

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 15, 2008

When community-based organizations, universities and school districts begin training thousands of new volunteer tutors and mentors this fall, those organizations will need to add one more topic to their agendas: an understanding of cyber gossip and cyberbullying.

According to the National Crime Prevention Council in Arlington, Virginia, more than four in 10 U.S. teens are victims of cyberbullying, yet only one in 10 victims informs their parents of what’s happening. This, however, doesn’t mean that they’re not telling anybody else.

“Since we launched our organization in 2003, we’ve found that time and again, children share concerns with their volunteer tutors and mentors that they do not tell anybody else,” said Gary Kosman, Founder and CEO, America Learns. “It’s essential that volunteer-driven tutoring and mentoring programs equip their volunteers with the resources they need to respond appropriately when students come to them with news that they’re being harassed online or via cell phone messaging.”

America Learns, in partnership with teen and Net-Generation expert Vanessa Van Petten, have produced a free toolkit that volunteer tutors and mentors can use to assess, address, and if necessary, report cyber harassment incidents to children’s parents, school administrators, and website administrators. The resource is now available for free at http://www.americalearns.net/cyberbullying.

The toolkit not only offers tutors and mentors specific steps they can take, but also arms them with guidance they can provide to school administrators, parents and guardians. For example, the resource provides parents with a form letter that they can send to administrators of websites and Internet services such as facebook.com, MySpace.com and secondlife.com, and of services such as Google Talk and AIM. The letter helps parents to formally document the specific incident and request actions that the Internet company take to address the issue immediately.

“We know that most volunteer tutors and mentors don’t have a lot of time outside of their already busy lives to read tomes of research on this issue,” said Van Petten, “so we put together a succinct toolkit that volunteers not only use to take stock of and address the situation to the extent that their roles with children allow, but to also quickly and easily educate and engage school administrators and parents so that the issue can be put to rest as soon as possible.”
