KidsHealth.org, the most-visited site on the Web for information about children’s health, behavior, and development from before birth through the teen years, has joined forces with Snaptic, HopeLab, and the TED Prize to sponsor the “Move Your App” developer challenge to inspire mobile users in the fight against obesity.

The challenge calls on Android developers to create apps that get people to move, while being fun to use and innovative in their approach to encouraging physical activity. Snaptic will provide resources for developers to draw from to build their apps, and will announce the winners at its developer conference in San Francisco on May 27.

KidsHealth will award a prize to the top apps that focus on kids, teens, or parents, and will promote them on KidsHealth.org, which attracts millions of unique visitors per month.

“At KidsHealth we are always looking for opportunities to reach more parents, teens, and kids with the latest information and means to improve their health,” said Neil Izenberg, MD, Editor-in-Chief and Founder, KidsHealth. “The ‘Move Your App’ challenge is an innovative approach and we are excited to see what Android developers create to inspire movement and exercise for kids.”

Registration began on Thursday April 22, 2010, and developers must complete and submit their application by Friday, May 21, 2010. The finalists will showcase their applications at the Snaptic developer conference and the winners will be announced live at the event by a panel of expert judges.

Joining Dr. Izenberg on the judging panel are Juan Enriquez, Author, Futurist & Partner at Excel Venture Management; Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus Systems & former CEO MySQL; Amy Novogratz, TED Prize Director; Pam Omidyar, Founder and Board Chair, HopeLab; and George Zachary, Partner at Charles River Ventures; among others.
