Little Change in Unemployment Numbers Spells Dismal News for US Economic Growth, Unemployment-Extension.Org

Unemployment-Extension.Org show that May unemployment numbers remained virtually unchanged at 9.1%. Job gains continued in professional and business services, health care and mining. Employment in other major private sector industries were little changed and local government employment continued to decline. Although not dire, the numbers indicate that job growth and the economy are moving frustratingly slowly.

According to Unemployment-Extension.Org & the United States Department of Labor, unemployment rates for adult men and women, teenagers, whites, blacks and Hispanics, showed little or no change in May. The number of long-term unemployed increased to 6.2 million. Numbers for part time workers remained unchanged.

Private sector work continued to grow and gains continued to be seen in professional services such as accounting, bookkeeping services and computer systems design. Health care employment also continued to grow. Employment in other major industries, including retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and leisure and hospitality saw little change. Local government employment continued its downward trend.

Overall, the mood of the American public is pessimistic towards these most recent unemployment numbers with 57% of those polled feeling that the “economic recovery has not begun.” With only 54,000 jobs created in May, down from 232,000 in April, the Obama administration must do significantly more to improve these bleak economic numbers. Requests for an additional Unemployment Extension are already in process.
