With the ever increasing publicity of celebrity drama and gossip that can be found daily in the news media; two Gwinnett County pre-teens found their niche on the opposite end of the spectrum. Marlaina James and Dazsenee Forrest came up with the idea of starting Jorrest Teen magazine by accident. Trying not to succumb to the boredom of summer, the girls began working on separate writing projects. Marlaina wrote an anime story, while Dazsenee created a fashion magazine.
The magazines caught the attention of the girlsâ parents, who encouraged them to create a more professional magazine to sell to their classmates. These 11 year old honor students researched their interests, chose teen friendly articles and form the first magazine issue. Topics in the first issue include: fall fashion tips, Math Challenge, one teens struggle with being locked up, recipes, and much more. The magazine is also an avenue for teens to express themselves through writing and art. Teens will be able to submit articles, poetry, lyrics, and art for publishing.
Jorrest Teen magazine will be used to provide helpful information regarding issues teens deal with daily. The information provided would then allow the teens to make an informed decision. According to NRS Crisis center, 1 in 7 children will run away from home before the age of 18. In an article written by Emma Salkill regarding teen runaways, it discusses how many of the kids who runaway, end up living on the streets, or dead. Included in the article is the phone number to the NRC crisis line where teens can obtain counseling and a free ride back home. Upon reading the ‘Teen Runaways’ article, Richard B; a local H.S. sophomore, stated that he knew several people who wanted to runaway from home. Richard immediately called one of his classmates to give them the number. “That was confirmation for me; that we were doing the right thing in creating a magazine for teens. Our kids need to know where to go and get help that’s available to them,” says Marilyn Sr. Editor working with Jorrest. Beth Hitesman, a certified life coach writes an article about finding your specific purpose in life. It tells them that we are unique, and we all were given special gifts or desires in our heart. Beth also offers free coaching tips on her website, www.realifestrategies.com. Teens can submit their family friendly articles or poetry for publishing online at www.jorrest-teen-magazine.com
Jenny Poole the girls administrator says “We are very impressed with what these girls have accomplished. They’ve done a really good job.”
Peter Garick, owner of the Duluth School of Ballet, says âI am so proud of these girls for publishing this magazine.â
Ron Forrest a transit manager with MARTA said, âIâm surprised (about the content) this magazine has substance. I thought it would be like the other teen magazines, full of celebrity gossip.â
