It was recently publicized that a 23-year old woman became a GRANDMOTHER – - she was 12 years old when she had her daughter and, her 11-year old daughter gave birth this year. This is a cycle that continues to be handed down from generation to generation.
In an attempt to break this vicious cycle, Melinda Robertson has written a book entitled, “Motherhood, What You DonÂÂt Know!” The story surrounds the life of Nicole Washington, a 15-year old pregnant teen. It highlights the many challenges Nicole faces after losing her virginity, hiding her pregnancy, and ultimately giving birth. Trying to juggle ÂÂmotherhoodÂÂ and the demands of high school classes is more than Nicole ever imagined. This journey through motherhood is one every teen should read about because its REAL!
Gone are the days when musicians eluded to sexual encounters. The music lyrics are sexually explicit and their videos are borderline pornography. The young women portrayed in these videos shaking and gyrating practically nude are sending the wrong message to our youth. The music lyrics and videos, combined with cable programming all contribute to todayÂÂs youth becoming sexually active at a much earlier age.
ÂÂMotherhood, What You DonÂÂt Know!ÂÂ is a ‘reality check’ for teens about the consequences that come with having sex. One of the ways to deal with the teen pregnancy epidemic is to open the lines of communication and talk about sex-a topic many parents choose not to discuss with their children.
Radio host, Michael Baisden recently had the “teen pregnancy” topic on his ‘Love, Lust and Lies’ syndicated show and the response from parents, teens with babies, pregnant teens, etc. was overwhelming. They were all searching for answers to questions such as: How do you prevent teen pregnancy? How do you talk to your 13-year old about sex? When to talk about sex with your teen? These are all issues addressed in “Motherhood, What You Don’t Know!” This book is REAL!

About the Author
Melinda Robertson is a native Washingtonian having grown up in Southeast Washington. Although Ms. Robertson was also a teen parent, she didnÂÂt want that to be her daughtersÂÂ reality. Ms. RobertsonÂÂs sacrifice and hard work resulted in her daughter graduating from Syracuse University last year with her MSW. Ms. Robertson hopes that her novel will be an inspiration to teens (with and without children) and give them something many of them no longer have – hope.
