Appolicious – When it comes to the video game world, it’s nearly impossible to discuss a game without talking about all the other titles that came before it. Every game on the market, be it store shelves or the iTunes App Store, has built off the foundations of games that have come before, and that creates a tough spot for many game developers. At what point does a game stop building off another title’s ideas or being “inspired” by another work, and start being theft of an idea?

Value of Truth Weighed Against Virtue of Compassion in Dynamic Love Story
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 11, 2007
Maintaining a balance between truth and compassion in relationships, whether with friends, family or lovers, can be instrumental in the success of said relationships. At age 14, precocious Christie O’Kelly hasn’t quite grasped this balance, and tends to tip the scales in favor of the raw, unvarnished truth when it comes to her relationships with her mother and sisters. Christie’s journey toward understanding the precious balance between truth and compassion is the heart of Lynda Fitzgerald’s debut novel, “If Truth Be Told” (ISBN 978-1594145681, Five Star/Thomson Gale, 2007).
Set in Florida’s picturesque Melbourne Beach, “If Truth Be Told” begins with teenage Christie gaining a second mother. Though she has nothing in common with her own society-conscious mother and sisters, Christie finds love and kindness in her uncle’s new wife, a benevolent woman named Carly. Thanks to Carly’s wisdom and influence, Christie is set on a journey of emotional growth, where she learns about the importance of compassion and forgiveness.
Christie’s transformation from a gawky 14-year-old to a remarkable newspaper reporter of 28 is filled with typical growing pains, including finding and losing her first love. Early on in the novel, Christie falls head over heels for Carly’s handsome college-bound son, Todd, but their relationship comes to a dramatically painful halt, and it’s not until tragedy befalls their family that Christie and Todd reconnect.
As the novel progresses, “If Truth Be Told” becomes a suspenseful mystery story as well. The emotional plot thickens when Christie’s uncle falls ill, then suddenly dies after being in a stable condition for weeks. When Christie begins to suspect foul play from within the family, her truth-seeking instincts kick in. Though she knows that she must find the truth about her uncle’s death, Christie realizes it may cost everything that matters to her. What she finds challenges her beliefs about life and those she loves and requires the most difficult evaluation of truth, compassion and forgiveness that Christie has ever faced.

Newhouse Celebrates 40th Anniversary With Campaign Against Teen Dating Violence
Overland Park, Kansas (Vocus/PRWEB) January 18, 2011
Ascend Integrated Media LLC, and its operating brand Ascend Media, has been chosen to develop newhouse4teens.org a website to promote a year-long campaign by Newhouse to educate teens and parents on the dangers of teen dating violence. The website is launching in time for National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.
In celebrating their 40th anniversary Newhouse decided to place a spotlight on the issue of teen dating violence by launching a website dedicated to the topic. They are providing the resources necessary for teens, their parents, their teachers and their counselors to educate themselves about the signs and dangers of dating violence.
Along with the online campaign there is an ongoing educational initiative within local schools, Girl Scout troops and church groups providing the community with awareness about this growing problem. Fifty percent of teens know someone who has been physically, sexually, or verbally abusive in a dating relationship. Liz Claiborne Inc., Conducted by Teenage Research Unlimited, (February 2005). With statistics like these itâs easy to see how this problem is wide-spread and education is the only way to lead to prevention of such a prevalent issue facing our young teen population.
âNewhouse is very excited to launch the âNewhouse4Teensâ website into the KC Metro Community. We believe that teen dating violence is not only underreported, but under recognized. Many parents, friends and community members have known a victim of dating violence but have either not recognized the signs or were unsure how to help. If information was more readily available and accessible, many victims would be able to break free of the relationship and attain safety. The foremost goal of the website is to help increase awareness and prevention of teen dating violence. We connected with Ascend initially by accidentâ but we are very pleased with the comprehensive services they delivered. It was also helpful that they understand our financial issues and tailored a package to fit our needs while not breaking our budget.â Bridgette Mavec, vice president of clinical services, Newhouse Domestic Violence Shelter
Cam Bishop, CEO Ascend Integrated Media expressed the custom publishing companyâs pride at being chosen to partner on this campaign. âWe are both pleased and honored to be working with Newhouse. It is a great organization and cause. For our team any time we can apply our creativity and media distribution skills to help our nonprofit clients develop greater awareness for their cause and to help enhance connections with volunteers and donors, it is very gratifying.â

Teens Take a Stand Against Tanning
Hillsborough, NJ (Vocus) May 4, 2010
Melanoma is the second leading cause of cancer death for people age 15 to 30, and the rate is increasing. Now, the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is reaching out to teens about tanning and its link to the deadliest type of skin cancer.
Launched as part of Melanoma Awareness Month, the âTake a Stand, Donât Tan!â campaign provides teens with the facts about the health risks associated with tanning. The campaign uses Facebook, YouTube and other online tools, including the âTake a Stand, Donât Tan!â pledge.
âThis isnât a cancer that waits for people to grow old before it strikes and teens need to understand the health risks before they get in a tanning bed,â said Tim Turnham, executive director of the MRF. âMelanoma is the second most common type of cancer in teens and young adults and the leading cause of cancer death in women 25 to 30 years old.â
The campaignâs website, http://www.melanoma.org/take-a-stand, explains why there is no such thing as a âsafeâ or âhealthyâ tan and encourages teens to sign an online pledge to not tan. It also features âConfessions of an Ex-Tanner,â a series of interviews with women who have a history of both tanning and melanoma. Links to the MRFâs Facebook page and YouTube channel allow teens to take online polls, view the true impact of skin cancer in the âscar galleryâ and participate in an interactive video about the pressure on teens to tan.
Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States and worldwide. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, such as sunlight or indoor tanning beds, is one of the major risk factors for most melanomas. Recent research has shown that using tanning beds before age 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma by 75 percent and occasionally using tanning beds can triple your chances. Last year, 69,000 Americans were diagnosed with the disease, resulting in one death every single hour.
The importance of addressing sun safety in the youth population was recently further reinforced by a new partnership between the MRF and “Cosmopolitan” magazine to raise awareness and funds for melanoma research. “Cosmo” readers will receive an awareness bracelet with a $ 10 donation to the MRF. The fundraising drive is part the magazineâs ongoing âPractice Safe Sunâ campaign to combat the high rate of skin cancer among young women.
On a regulatory level, in March, the Food and Drug Administration’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee recommended banning the use of tanning beds entirely for those under the age of 18 or at least requiring parental consent. Additionally, the committee recommended the FDA re-classify tanning beds, as well as mandate stronger warning labels.
âI started visiting indoor tanning salons in the year leading up to my wedding because I was under a lot of stress and I found it really relaxing,â said Kristi Setzer, a 27-year old woman who was diagnosed with melanoma in 2008. âI would go to the tanning salon every other day because it made me feel prettier and thinner when I had some color. I enjoyed it so much I continued despite the warnings from my family, as my uncle had succumbed to melanoma four years prior. I was incredibly lucky because my melanoma was found early. Young women need to realize that it really can happen to you.â
About Melanoma
Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, is one of the fastest growing cancers in the United States and can strike men and women of all ages, all races and skin types. In fact, with a one in 50 lifetime risk of developing melanoma, nearly 69,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with the disease in 2009, resulting in 8,650 deaths or one person every hour. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25- to 29-years-old and the second most common cancer in adolescents and young adults 15- to 29-years-old.
About Melanoma Research Foundation
The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is the largest independent, national organization devoted to melanoma in the United States. Committed to the support of medical research in finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma, the MRF also educates patients and physicians about prevention, diagnosis and the treatment of melanoma. The MRF is an active advocate for the melanoma community, helping to raise awareness of this disease and the need for a cure. The MRFâs website is the premier source for melanoma information seekers. Children’s National Unveils Display to Raise Awareness of Violence Against Youth
Washington, D.C. (Vocus) April 14, 2009
Children’s National Medical Center unveiled the third annual Clothesline Project exhibition, featuring T-shirts designed by youth who have witnessed or experienced violence.
Artists include adolescents and teens who are members of Children’s National Teen Life Clubs. The Clothesline Project depicts their messages about ending violence against youth. The display is hosted by the Teen Life Clubs and New Horizons, two important programs at Children’s National.
“The Clothesline Project is a powerful reminder of the negative impact violence has on our children,” said Allison Jackson, MD, medical director of the Child and Adolescent Protection Center at Children’s National. “In this stressful economic time, it’s important to remember to provide kids with the care and respect they need – and deserve.”
The Clothesline Project is on display until June 2009. It is a national initiative, which provides healing opportunities for survivors of violence. The shirts also raise public awareness for the magnitude of this issue. Personal narratives and graphic messages illustrated on these shirts testify to the reality of violence against teens and the strength of the survivors.
Teen Life Clubs are empowerment programs for 11-14 year olds sponsored by the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine. These clubs help youth develop individual strengths and build life skills by using a curriculum that focuses on adolescent health, volunteerism, violence prevention, and career exploration.
New Horizons is the arts education and cultural enrichment program at Children’s National. New Horizons provides bedside instructional activities in visual arts, literature, music, dance, movement, puppetry, and story telling.
The Child and Adolescent Protection Center at Children’s national is the only such center in the District of Columbia with a team of health professionals dedicated to victims of child abuse and their families. The center treats more than 1,300 children annually from the District of Columbia and surrounding jurisdictions, and serves more than 1,800 children annually through its participation in the District of Columbia’s Multidisciplinary Team on Child Abuse.

(PRWEB) July 17, 2005
Cross Gates Club, a comprehensive fitness center located in Slidell, a suburb of New Orleans, has provided an area teenager in need with a six-month scholarship to its all-fitness Pontchartrain location.
Another six-month membership has been pledged by childhood obesity advocate group, LouieÂÂs Kids, on the condition that the teen makes a significant change in her weight during the first six months.
LouieÂÂs Kids, founded by Louis Yuhasz, provides overweight and obese children and teenagers scholarships to attend weight loss and behavior modification camp. The New Orleans teenÂÂs application was one of the dozens Yuhasz receives every year from overweight and obese teens, desperate for help.
Financially, the organization can only distribute so many scholarships a year. For those children who are not selected, Yuhasz works to find other ways to make a healthy difference in their lives.
The New Orleans teen expressed a desire to join a gym, so Yuhasz set out to find her one. He contacted Cross Gates Club and gave them her story, sending Pontchartrain managers Joey Sanders and Dion Grossnickle some background information on LouieÂÂs Kids as well as a copy of the teenÂÂs application letter, which, as Sanders said, was all it took to bring them on board in helping this teen.
ÂÂCross Gates is always trying to get out the message of health and fitness,ÂÂ said Sanders. ÂÂWe are a community-based organization and when we have the opportunity to help someone in the area, we are happy to.ÂÂ
The six month fitness scholarship includes enrollment in Cross GatesÂÂ ÂÂCommit to FitÂÂ program. The teen will meet with a certified trainer three times over the course of 12 weeks. First to evaluate her current weight and health and determine a plan for her, then to familiarize her with the actual workout equipment, and finally to asses her progress and determine whether or not the program is working for her.
ÂÂItÂÂs awful having to turn any child down for a scholarship, but itÂÂs great to be able to provide another way to get these kids off to a good start in changing their lifestyles,ÂÂ said Yuhasz. ÂÂThis amazing girl in New Orleans is anxious for a change and the people at Cross Gates Club totally stepped up to the plate.ÂÂ
Yuhasz founded LouieÂÂs Kids in honor of his father ÂÂBig Louie,ÂÂ who weighed nearly 550 pounds at the time of his death in 2001. The number of scholarships available each year depends on the private donations and monies generated through fundraisers. This year, Yuhasz expects to send eight children to camp on scholarships.
It has been estimated that this generation of children will be the first to have a lower life expectancy than their parents due to complications of obesity. LouieÂÂs Kids aims to reverse this trend by helping overweight and obese children make healthy changes in time to impact their futures. To learn more about LouieÂÂs Kids, make a donation, or download an application, visit www.louieskids.org.
