Alcohol and Marijuana Use by Teens Harms Intellect

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 15, 2010

A new study has been released from The University of New Mexico School of Medicine comparing the mental abilities of teens that abused alcohol and marijuana to those who abstained from drugs. The results of this research are reported in the study Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Overall, this new study supports the idea that alcohol and marijuana use impairs the mental abilities of teens.

During the study, 48 teenagers were divided into three groups consisting of substance abusers, non-users, and non-users whose parents were alcoholics. The study found that the more alcohol that students drank, the lower their test performances turned out to be. Teens who abused alcohol performed poorly on executive functioning tests in particular. The research also indicated that memory abilities were negatively impacted by marijuana although not alcohol.

Teens who were diagnosed with substance abuse or dependence problems also had lower scores on attention, memory and processing speeds. The study suggests that excessive drinking amongst teens can reduce their attention spans and executive functioning abilities. There are various specialized substance abuse treatment options available for teens that are dependent or addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Robert Thoma, associate professor of psychiatry and the lead author of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine stated, “The worry is that kids who start drinking early, and drinking heavily, may be affected for their entire life. The data is just beginning to suggest this is true.”

It is possible and essential that teens get help before these substances take more of a heavy toll on their lives. Recovery Now TV has a list of treatment resources available on their web site. To find a local treatment facility Recovery Now also lists treatment providers by state.

Drug Test Your Teen (www.drugtestyourteen.com) is asking for your help in raising awareness about teen drug abuse prevention. Responsible parents need to be alerted that they can stop or even prevent teen drug, alcohol, and tobacco use by testing at home.A child that is tested at home may never even try drugs when they know that their parents take drug use so seriously that they keep tests in the house and will use them at will.

The President wants to allot $ 23 million tax dollars to be given to schools so that they can drug test our kids. Kim Hildreth, owner of Drug Test Your Teen states, “While that may be necessary in some cases, parents need to be made aware that they can accurately and inexpensively test at home for most street drugs, alcohol use, and even cigarette smoking. Wouldn’t they rather handle these problems at home, before having a teenagers school record tarnished with a positive drug test result?” All of the anti- drug campaigns say to “find out if your kids are using drugs”, but parents are not given information on how to do this.

Ms. Hildreth and her two teenage daughters are making it their life’s work to try to get parents to pull their heads out of the sand and hear their message. “We hear from parents everyday that refuse to believe that the drugs they found in their teenagers bedroom belonged to their kid!” says Linzy Hildreth, 17-year-old President of Drug Test Your Teen. No parent wants to believe that it is “their kid”. Statistics prove that most parents with teens in rehab did not have a clue that their child was using drugs, or chose to ignore a “feeling” because they simply did not want to believe it was true.

“Testing early for “gateway drugs” is a great deterrent for young teens,” says Delaney Hildreth, 15, who became involved with drugs at the age of 12. “As a kid, I can tell you absolutely that the kids who smoke cigarettes lead you to the kids that drink, and the kids that drink lead you to the kids who do drugs”. Delaney’s mom thought she was too young to need to be tested at the age of 12, before drugs nearly ruined Delaney’s life and Kim realized the truth. “She told such convincing stories, and I wanted to believe the best”.

The HildrethÂ’s need help getting their message out- letting everyone with a teen or pre-teen learn that that home drug testing available, and that it works as a deterrent to drug abuse.

Instant Home Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Testing Can Aid Parents in Raising Teenagers

Category : Teen Drug Abuse

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) October 17, 2005

Drug Test Your Teen (www.DrugTestYourTeen.com) began as a passionate team effort of the mothers and daughters of Kim, Linzy, & Delaney Hildreth. Their mission to help keep teens off drugs has now turned them into experts in the field of teen drug abuse prevention.

Kim worked as a laboratory professional for many years and admits being a “pretty wild” teenager herself – and is now the single mom of two teenage daughters. Linzy is a teen that has experienced first hand the peer pressure to go down the wrong road, and has seen close-up how easily drug abuse can destroy lives. Delaney brings the experience of a child who was lured into the drug scene when she was only 12, and the difficulties involved in finding her way back. Together, their experience led them to creating a business focusing on families dealing with teen drug use prevention.

The Hildreth’s say that what have learned from parents dealing with teen drug issues has been amazing. One common theme of the many calls and e-mails is that so many parents wish that they had regularly tested their kids from a young age when they could have prevented their child from ever becoming involved with drugs. Denial seems to be commonplace among even the most diligent parents.

The Hildreth’s are desperately trying to get their message out to parents of younger teens, before those kids even think about trying drugs. Kim states, “Unfortunately, most parents don’t find us until drugs have already become a problem. We believe that parents should start talking with their kids about drugs in early elementary school, and start random drug, alcohol and tobacco testing at home by 6th or 7th grade. It sounds harsh, but it lets the child know that they will get caught if they get pressured into doing drugs. In addition, home testing gives the child a socially acceptable excuse to not succumb to peer pressure. The grateful thank you calls and e-mails have made us positive that early home testing (not just the threat) is a great deterrent to drug, alcohol, and tobacco use.”
