New Orleans Fitness Center Joins Louie’s Kids in Fight against Childhood Obesity

Category : Teen Fitness

(PRWEB) July 17, 2005

Cross Gates Club, a comprehensive fitness center located in Slidell, a suburb of New Orleans, has provided an area teenager in need with a six-month scholarship to its all-fitness Pontchartrain location.

Another six-month membership has been pledged by childhood obesity advocate group, LouieÂ’s Kids, on the condition that the teen makes a significant change in her weight during the first six months.

LouieÂ’s Kids, founded by Louis Yuhasz, provides overweight and obese children and teenagers scholarships to attend weight loss and behavior modification camp. The New Orleans teenÂ’s application was one of the dozens Yuhasz receives every year from overweight and obese teens, desperate for help.

Financially, the organization can only distribute so many scholarships a year. For those children who are not selected, Yuhasz works to find other ways to make a healthy difference in their lives.

The New Orleans teen expressed a desire to join a gym, so Yuhasz set out to find her one. He contacted Cross Gates Club and gave them her story, sending Pontchartrain managers Joey Sanders and Dion Grossnickle some background information on LouieÂ’s Kids as well as a copy of the teenÂ’s application letter, which, as Sanders said, was all it took to bring them on board in helping this teen.

“Cross Gates is always trying to get out the message of health and fitness,” said Sanders. “We are a community-based organization and when we have the opportunity to help someone in the area, we are happy to.”

The six month fitness scholarship includes enrollment in Cross Gates’ “Commit to Fit” program. The teen will meet with a certified trainer three times over the course of 12 weeks. First to evaluate her current weight and health and determine a plan for her, then to familiarize her with the actual workout equipment, and finally to asses her progress and determine whether or not the program is working for her.

“It’s awful having to turn any child down for a scholarship, but it’s great to be able to provide another way to get these kids off to a good start in changing their lifestyles,” said Yuhasz. “This amazing girl in New Orleans is anxious for a change and the people at Cross Gates Club totally stepped up to the plate.”

Yuhasz founded Louie’s Kids in honor of his father “Big Louie,” who weighed nearly 550 pounds at the time of his death in 2001. The number of scholarships available each year depends on the private donations and monies generated through fundraisers. This year, Yuhasz expects to send eight children to camp on scholarships.

It has been estimated that this generation of children will be the first to have a lower life expectancy than their parents due to complications of obesity. LouieÂ’s Kids aims to reverse this trend by helping overweight and obese children make healthy changes in time to impact their futures. Personal Injury Law Firm Creates Family Safety Library; GJEL Accident Attorneys News Center is Resource for Motorists, Cyclists, More

Orinda, Calif. (Vocus) December 1, 2010

Gillin Jacobson Ellis & Larsen (GJEL Accident Attorneys), a catastrophic injury and wrongful death law firm in the San Francisco Bay area, has published an online news center as a family resource on issues pertaining to motoring on the nation’s roadways and bicycle paths.

With a focus on driver safety, the news center features a series of auto insurance quizzes, important accident documents, and several interactive infographics that provide state-by-state snapshots of driving laws; the impact of teen brain development on driving; and bicycling safety laws throughout the country.

“Family safety is a key issue for our firm, and we developed our news center as a reference point for past, current, and prospective clients to help them stay safe on the roadways,” said Andy Gillin, managing partner of GJEL. “We will continue to explore all angles from teens to seniors, and ensure that we’re educating everyone on the importance of safety in a car, on a bike, or on a motorcycle–and even as a pedestrian sharing the road with these vehicles.”

In addition to the interactive maps and charts, GJEL Accident Attorneys has a downloadable Parent-Teen Safe Driving Contract and an Accident Checklist for all drivers to keep in their vehicle’s glove box. Along with each resource is in-depth information to help inform people to be safer behind the wheel, regardless of age. The law firm is beginning to explore national issues pertaining to senior drivers, and features a resource detailing state limitations on aging drivers and actions people of all ages can take to keep their loved ones safe on the roads.

Teen Brain Development Infographic

The Teen Brain Development infographic depicts how sections of the brain develop through an animated progression of white matter growth by age. Lack of white matter in teens’ frontal lobe (the part of the brain responsible for motor skills and the suppression of risks) contributes to propensity for more accidents at this age than in adulthood, when the brain has reached maturity.

State-by-State Driving Laws Infographic

Complementing the teen brain development infographic is a map of the U.S. with each state’s driving laws depicted in an interactive feature. When the viewer hovers over each state with a mouse, a drop-down menu appears showing each state’s required ages for graduated drivers’ licenses, distracted driving bans, and senior driver restrictions.

State-by-State Bicycling Safety Laws Infographic

Using the same interactive visual to feature driving laws, GJEL Accident Attorneys shows each state’s requirements and laws for motorcycle helmets, bicycle helmets, and cycling under the influence. Where applicable, age requirements are also specified.

About Gillin Jacobson Ellis & Larsen

Echo Maluibu Teen Treatment Center Addresses Holiday Related Depression, Anxiety and Substance Abuse

Category : Teen Depression

Malibu, California (PRWEB) December 7, 2005 – December 7, 2005-

Both anecdotal evidence and numerous studies support the idea that the holidays represent a time in which American’s experience a rise in depression, anxiety and substance abuse. The data that supports such a belief is almost exclusively aimed at adults, without consideration to adolescents.

According to Cole Rucker, co-founder of ECHO MALIBU TEEN TREATMENT CENTER, http://www.echomalibu.com , such an oversight can be dangerous. “We see the holidays as potentially a very difficult time for adolescents. Many are on winter break with little supervision. They may be alone with difficult thoughts or feelings that they were to busy to experience during their last semester of school.”

Dr. Jeffrey Nalin, Executive Director of ECHO MALIBU adds, “As with adults, adolescents may experience great disappointment during the holidays if they’re expecting a holiday that is a direct reflection of what the media has told them is ideal. Most families fall short.” He goes on to state, “Teens may also pick up on the anxiety of adults, experience direct or indirect tensions around dealing with difficult visiting relatives, or simply be impacted by the collective stress the holidays can bring.’

Rucker adds, “The bottom line is that if you are talking about at-risk youth, any added stressor can serve as a trigger for substance abuse or other problem behaviors. Parents should watch for signs that indicate that their child might be in trouble.”

According to Dr. Nalin, “Some of the signs parents should look for include: changes in sleeping habits or appetite, social isolation or retreat, changes in dress or appearance, a change in friends, or loss of interest in pursuits that have been of importance. It isn’t always easy for parents to determine the nature or severity of an emerging problem.”

In an effort to assist parents, ECHO MALIBU TEEN TREATMENT CENTER, http://www.echomalibu.com , has extra counselors on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide assistance to families who may be in crisis. Parents or youth may call 800 780 ECHO to speak with a counselor free of charge.

Prom Fest 2004 Kicks off Prom Season with Chic Fashions at Parson

Category : High School Prom

(PRWEB) January 14, 2004

To mark the beginning of prom season, Prom Guide’s “Prom Fest 2004″ comes to the ParsonÂ’s Exhibition Center, 560 Seventh Ave. on Saturday, January 17, 2004 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Prom Fest 2004 is an annual fashion show that highlights exclusive prom apparel never seen before in public.

About a thousand teens are expected to attend Prom GuideÂ’s Prom Fest 2004 sponsored by Hot97. The 2004 teen models will catwalk wearing some of the seasonÂ’s most dynamic colors of sunset, tropic blue, and tangerine in designs by Mike Benet. Other featured collections include Tiffany Designs, the Nadine Collection by Bridal Originals and collections by Magic New York City. In tuxedos, the single-breasted contemporary coat with a square-cut will be featured in the After Six repertoire by MenÂ’s Apparel Group. Lord West will display tuxedos by Ecko and Perry Ellis while Formalwear International presents Jean Yves. More menÂ’s formal wear by Andrew Fezza will be shown by Formal One.

As Prom Fest’s fashion coordinator, Sharon ‘Magic’ Jordan, an internationally acclaimed model whose face has graced the pages of Essence and Vogue and who has strutted the runways from New York to Milan, says that teens are looking for the “bling bling”—small sequins in clear looks, rhinestones, and plenty of paillettes. “Big sequins are too dated and traditional ball gowns are a thing of the past”, she says. “Girls are looking to the red carpet and are taking notes on the glamorous, chic, sleek looks of Hollywood’s A-list with cut outs, peek-a-boos and unexpected fabric combinations.”

One of Prom Guide’s featured cover models, Anna Karwacka of Murray Bergtraum High School for Business and Careers in New York agrees. “I’m really thinking of buying the red strapless dress with all the tiny sequins to the Prom—the same one that I wore on the cover of Prom Guide.” She says that her friends are excited about Prom Fest too because they want to get ideas for the prom and see her on the cover of Prom Guide Magazine before it hits high schools. In addition to advanced copies of Prom Guide magazine, exclusive prom fashion, and giveaways, teens will rub shoulders with celebrity guests, see musical performances and enjoy a free buffet. Garfield Bowen, publisher, says, “Next to the actual prom, this event gives teens another opportunity to experience the prom excitement.”
