Nickel City Smiler chronicles an Asian American refugee’s fight for survival and hope. For his entire life, Smiler Greely has lived in conditions only few could imagine. Growing up in Burma, at age 10, Smiler and his family were forced to flee their small village after the Burmese military attacked, tortured, raped and murdered thousands of the countries ethnic minorities. As a teenager, Smiler was compelled to join the resistance army in an attempt to prevent the slaughter of innocent people at the hands of the Burmese Junta. Eventually, Smiler and his family escaped into Thailand where over the next 20 years they lived in various refugee camps enduring confinement and poverty. It was in Beh Klaw refugee camp, where Smiler met and married his wife Ma Dee and became a father. In 2007, an optimistic Smiler and his family were selected for resettlement by the United States and assigned to live in Buffalo, New York.
Nickel City Smiler documents the ways in which Smiler’s resettlement in Buffalo, at times, is as challenging as the life he left behind. Smiler, his family and other refugees continue to battle hardship, violence and bureaucracy in one of America’s poorest cities. Smiler’s determination, optimism, and desire to support his community are manifested in his son Moe Joe’s moral idealism and sense of social justice. The strength present in Smiler’s family represents the very essence of the refugee community.
Nickel City Smiler is a small voice for the refugees and delivers a simple message: The journey for many refugees never ends and hope and determination are the cornerstones of their character. This film will enlighten viewers and reveal the true nature of refugees and their challenges.

The council fears the planning for the Games is quickly becoming a “Brisbane-centric” project, despite it being held on the Gold Coast.
It is also feared the state and federal governments could treat the bid win as a “Games-only” project, without looking at the bigger picture for the city.
Cr Clarke said the Gold Coast was “very enthusiastic” about the Games and it was “only fair” it was included in the decision-making processes.
“What we are saying is the Gold Coast has made, and will make, a pretty substantial contribution to the Commonwealth Games,” Cr Clarke said. “We have committed $234 million in cash and in kind over the period.
“With all the contribution made, we have no representation. This is something that is happening in our back yard and we would like a say.”
Cr Clarke said while the Games were important, so was the lasting infrastructure.
The council would be drafting a Games legacy investment report which would ultimately require support from governments and even the private sector.
The council has offered at least $100 million but says the figure may be increased after the local government election in May or June.
Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Mark Stockwell said he was “encouraged” that the council wanted a say in the project. “I think the Gold Coast City Council needs to play a role at every city-making level,” he said.
Council chief executive Dale Dickson said the Commonwealth Games was the “best opportunity” to unite the city.
The boss of the city’s biggest employer said this was the locals’ chance to become “citizens not residents”. But he said the city needed a say in how it would benefit.
“This is an opportunity to galvanise the city like never before,” Mr Dickson said.
“But we want to make sure it is a Games that leaves a legacy on the Gold Coast.”
