Students Get Focused. Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax Education Association, and the Lions of Northern Virginia Join Read Across America

Springfield, VA (PRWEB) March 4, 2011

Today schools across the country will participate in the National Education Association’s Read Across America, a program designed to get students interested in reading. The day usually entails reading Dr. Seuss books in celebration of the beloved author’s birthday.

This year the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Fairfax Education Association (FEA) and the Lions of Northern Virginia joined forces to Get Focused on Reading, a campaign designed for students to help promote literacy throughout the world by collecting and recycling used eyeglasses. Fliers were sent out asking parents to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses to donate to the Lions Recycle for Sight Program.

Getting the students excited to help the Lions was easy according to librarian and VP of the Fairfax Education Association, Kimberly Adams. “Here, at Mosby Woods Elementary, students even performed a skit for the morning news report. It’s exciting to have our students and schools participate in this unique recycling program in conjunction with the Lions Clubs,” noted Adams. “This program has allowed for younger students to participate in a civic cause and will teach them that even little things like collecting eyeglasses can have a local and global impact,” Adams furthered.

Thirty-six participating Fairfax schools sent students home with information and collection envelopes to help the Fairfax Host Lions Club collect used prescription eyeglasses and both prescription and non-prescription sunglasses over the next two weeks.

Lions District Governor Dennis Brining and wife Linda showed their appreciation to the students by donning red and white striped hats and volunteering their day to reading Dr. Seuss books to the students at Mosby Wood Elementary.

“We had as much laughs as the students when we came in to the library wearing our Cat in the Hat giant hats,” commented Lions District Governor Dennis Brining. “But the mission is so much more, encouraging student to participate in eyeglasses recycling teaches them important lessons in being good citizens and good stewards.”

To donate used glasses, community members and participating students are asked to place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle for Sight collection boxes located at your school library for the first two weeks in March.

The donated glasses collected by the students will go to the Regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, located in Arlington, VA, to be processed and distributed.

NEA’s Read Across America Day, NEA’s national reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books, and you can too!

The National Education Association is building a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. Now in its thirteenth year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.

The Fairfax Host Lions Club has 70 members and meets on the first and third Tues of the month from 6:30 PM-8:30 PM at the American Legion Post 177, 3939 Oak Street, Fairfax, VA 22030. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. For more information or to get involved with the Fairfax Host Lions Club, please contact District Governor Dennis Brining at 703-503-8019, or Email: dlbent(at)aol(dot)com.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.35 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in more than 206 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world. flickr ‘relationships’.

goodness, what a fucking hornets nest!! ;o

let us move on, with a measure of decorum if that is possible!

flickr ‘relationships’?

what are they?

i have seen them.

i have been touched dearly and very deeply by them.

hopefully, i will continue to be touched by them every day from this point forward.

indeed, it can be said i am ‘in one’ [and gladly so].

i have seen people meet in the real world through an initial contact through flickr.

these ‘meetings’ have made wonderful connections that may well last lifetimes.

this is [in actual fact] one of the only ‘modern’ miracles i have ever witnessed.

i have seen people celebrate the connections they have made through this entirely revolutionary social network.

and yet.

the caveat!

the sheer number of fucking cretins, dickless wonders and pretenders.

fakers, idiots, people who steal the work of others, people who construct an entirely bogus ‘version’ of themselves, humans who do not have the courage to even offer a slim slice of thier own self, but wish to live behind some sham plastic curtain of ‘created’ reality.

i am left in wonder. why do these people engage in this pattern of behaviour?

grow
some
fucking
balls [gender free]

now now now.

we must discuss other pertinent facts.

and the real world impinges.

jealousy!
ownership!

you do not know me

you can only know me by living with me

and that may well wreck your percieved view.

[or that 'lack' may well simply magnify your view of me]

how is it for you?

you want real or flickr?

real or meat?

i am not about to offer opinion with regard to freudian interpretation, or indeed any other interpretation.

though i will comm with respect to what others comm.

Marlaina James and Daszenee Forrest, Two Gwinnett County Pre-teens, Came Up with the Idea of Starting a Magazine by Accident

Category : Teen Gossip

Buford, GA (PRWEB) December 15, 2005

With the ever increasing publicity of celebrity drama and gossip that can be found daily in the news media; two Gwinnett County pre-teens found their niche on the opposite end of the spectrum. Marlaina James and Dazsenee Forrest came up with the idea of starting Jorrest Teen magazine by accident. Trying not to succumb to the boredom of summer, the girls began working on separate writing projects. Marlaina wrote an anime story, while Dazsenee created a fashion magazine.

The magazines caught the attention of the girls’ parents, who encouraged them to create a more professional magazine to sell to their classmates. These 11 year old honor students researched their interests, chose teen friendly articles and form the first magazine issue. Topics in the first issue include: fall fashion tips, Math Challenge, one teens struggle with being locked up, recipes, and much more.    The magazine is also an avenue for teens to express themselves through writing and art. Teens will be able to submit articles, poetry, lyrics, and art for publishing.

Jorrest Teen magazine will be used to provide helpful information regarding issues teens deal with daily. The information provided would then allow the teens to make an informed decision. According to NRS Crisis center, 1 in 7 children will run away from home before the age of 18. In an article written by Emma Salkill regarding teen runaways, it discusses how many of the kids who runaway, end up living on the streets, or dead. Included in the article is the phone number to the NRC crisis line where teens can obtain counseling and a free ride back home. Upon reading the ‘Teen Runaways’ article, Richard B; a local H.S. sophomore, stated that he knew several people who wanted to runaway from home. Richard immediately called one of his classmates to give them the number. “That was confirmation for me; that we were doing the right thing in creating a magazine for teens. Our kids need to know where to go and get help that’s available to them,” says Marilyn Sr. Editor working with Jorrest. Beth Hitesman, a certified life coach writes an article about finding your specific purpose in life. It tells them that we are unique, and we all were given special gifts or desires in our heart. Beth also offers free coaching tips on her website, www.realifestrategies.com. Teens can submit their family friendly articles or poetry for publishing online at www.jorrest-teen-magazine.com

Jenny Poole the girls administrator says “We are very impressed with what these girls have accomplished. They’ve done a really good job.”

Peter Garick, owner of the Duluth School of Ballet, says “I am so proud of these girls for publishing this magazine.”

Ron Forrest a transit manager with MARTA said, “I’m surprised (about the content) this magazine has substance. I thought it would be like the other teen magazines, full of celebrity gossip.”
