Possibilities: A Supplemental Anthology for Career Choices (Fifty Short Stories, Essays, Poems, Plays and Speeches From Renowned Authors)

Career advice from John Updike and Robert Frost? Pep talks from Emily Dickinson and Albert Camus? Unusual, perhaps, but no more so than the idea of using a language arts class to teach problem-solving, risk-taking, and the work ethic. That’s the approach taken by Career Choices and its supplementary anthology, Possibilities. After spending a little time with the materials, you’re likely to begin wondering why no one ever thought of doing this before.

Possibilities is the language arts component in the Career Choices series, linking 50 selections of poetry, short stories and essays to specific lessons in the Career Choices text. The curriculum is flexible enough to be used in a variety of situations, and with students of varying abilities.

Avoiding the Path to Teenage Suicide is the New Book from Author Alain Simon Tuggle — A Guide for Teenagers, Parents and Everyone In Between

Avoiding the Path to Teenage Suicide is the New Book from Author Alain Simon Tuggle — A Guide for Teenagers, Parents and Everyone In Between

Malibu, CA (PRWEB) September 16, 2006

Malibu Calif. Author Alain Simon Tuggle shares his heartbreaking story of teenage depression in an effort to prevent the tragic incidence of teen suicide in his book.

Tuggle was 16 years old the first time he attempted to take his own life. Unfortunately, he says, this is more common than it should be. “Fourteen teenagers complete the act of suicide every day. This is a fact, and three to four times this amount attempt suicide daily,” he says. In Avoiding the Path to Teenage Suicide, he tells about this attempt as well as his second attempt, which occurred at the age of 17.

With the wisdom that only comes from hindsight, Tuggle candidly discusses his state of mind, as well as the motive that he discovered years later. “I was 37 years old when I realized one day that I was glad to be alive. All this, along with my best friend telling me that I was so angry and that I shouldn’t live like that, I decided to change my life and get rid of the anger. I realized that the anger was due to the relationship I had with my mother starting from about the age of 10,” he says.

In addition to his poignant autobiography, Avoiding the Path to Teenage Suicide includes a vital guide for teenagers dealing with suicidal thoughts and their parents. “There are teenagers out in the world with anger, frustration, desperation and inexperience that can lead to thoughts and actions of suicide. I want to save at least one teenage life, if not hundreds,” he says. “I believe if teenagers give themselves a chance to get through the tough times of youth, they will all appreciate their life at age 20,30,40 and so on.”

Above all, Tuggle says, the book is an honest depiction of a desperate soul, and provides solace to young people in the same position. “I believe this book will appeal to readers because it is from the heart. It gives a straight-forward look at teenage suicides and ways to overcome thoughts of suicide as an answer to temporary problems. As for the parents that read this book, my goal is to have you avoid standing at your child’s grave.”

Raised in Malibu, California, Tuggle has been creating art for most of his life. “My entire life I’ve written down words, phrases and sometimes page after page of things that come through my heart and soul,” he says. He began drawing in elementary school, and broadened his artistic horizons to include pottery and poetry in junior high and high school. His passion for poetry stemmed from his passion for music. Avoiding the path to Teenage Suicide is his first book. It is available at authorhouse.com.

Teenagers from Around the U.S. Travel to Marshfield to Help South Shore Community With Hands-on Home Repairs

(PRWEB) February 16, 2005

More than 450 hearty and high spirited teenagers and adult leaders are expected to converge on Marshfield, Mass. this summer, July 24 – 30, as part of the Group Workcamp program. Local sponsors include the First Congregational Church of Marshfield and Taylor Lumber – ACE Hardware.

Economically challenged regions in the Deep South and blighted urban areas in the Northeast are the more common focal destination for Group Workcamp programs, a nationally known effort that encourages teenagers to spend one week of their vacation helping the community with hands-on home repairs. This is the first effort to ever be held in New England.

South Shore residents who need a hand with home repairs ranging from wheelchair ramps to porches to interior/exterior painting to decks to weatherizing and more can apply for the FREE and enthusiastic teenage labor. Applications can be found at the website of the local effort — http://www.plymouthbayworkcamp.com. Or contact Bob Maffeo at 617.816-0228 or Jim McCory at 781-834-7855. Application deadline is March 1.

More than South Shore home renovation 70 projects will be selected. Projects will be chosen based on need. In particular, Group Workcamp is looking to help out economically challenged senior, single parents and the disabled.

“This is a great opportunity for teens to learn about helping to transform homes and lives,” noted Bob Maffeo, Marshfield resident who is helping spearhead the program. “We are looking forward to seeing all participants reap tangible and intangible rewards from this ambitious program.”

Local organizers Bob Maffeo, a member of First Congregational Church of Marshfield and Jim McCorry, a member of St. Christines Church of Marshfield have been canvassing local councils on aging and food pantries to create awareness of the program and to identify those in need.

Teenagers donate $ 399 to participate in the program. This covers their room and board for the week. This group will be staying at MarshfieldÂ’s Furnace Brook Middle School, First Congregational Church of Marshfield, St. ChristineÂ’s Church and North Community Church. In addition to honest, hard work, visitors will enjoy evening activities and touring the region.

The work at each home will be done by a crew of five young people and one adult leader, representing many Christian denominations.

More than $ 7,000 has already been raised to cover the cost of materials and room and board for teenagers chosen for scholarship. The goal is to raise $ 19,000 to $ 26,000. Locally, Taylor Lumber – ACE Hardware will be providing materials “at cost” and American Computer Technologies has donated the design, development and hosting of the comprehensive website that informs the public of the program.

Additional and local volunteers are being sought to host out of state volunteers, deliver materials, share tools, provide building materials, and donate funds. Those with home repair or construction experience are asked to help out with site identification and selection and to perform site evaluations during the camp week.

For more information, please contact http://www.plymouthbayworkcamp.com, email – PlymouthBayworkcamp2005@yahoo.com, Jim McCorry at (781) 834-7855, or write to Plymouth Bay Workcamp, C/O First Congregational Church, 1981 Ocean Street, Marshfield, Mass. 02050.

Teen Volunteers from Across North America Head to Atlanta for Leadership & Training Convention

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 21, 2009

300 teenage volunteer leaders from across North America will be attending the annual Junior Civitan International Convention at the DoubleTree Hotel Atlanta Northwest, June 25-28. Every year these community service leaders, who represent approximately 12,000 outstanding middle school and high school student volunteers in the United States and Canada, come together to share their experiences, participate in training, and celebrate their organization’s tremendous impact.

Nineteen Junior Civitan clubs in Georgia work alongside hundreds of others to make their communities better by conducting service projects, raising awareness of key issues and providing youth with leadership, volunteer and scholarship opportunities. At the international level, Junior Civitan members raise over $ 60,000 every year to fund scholarships, and research and clinical services at the UAB Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Alabama. The convention in Atlanta attempts to improve and inspire these young leaders, as they are recognized for tens of thousands of hours of community service work completed this year.

Junior Civitan’s parent organization, Civitan International, was founded in Birmingham in 1917, Civitan has grown to approximately 40,000 members in 28 countries. Just like Junior Civitans, local Civitan clubs meet a wide variety of needs in their communities, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Civitan International’s flagship project, the UAB Civitan International Research Center, is the result of a $ 20 million commitment by Civitan members to make life better for people with developmental disabilities. This state of the art center brings together top scientific minds and the latest technology to create innovative therapies and treatments for people with developmental disabilities. The Center provides services for a national clientele of individuals with special needs, while researchers and therapists from around the world come to learn and train in the newest breakthroughs.
