Social Networks Make Teen Girls Sexually Bolder : Teenage girls are more likely to use online networking to make sexual advances, a new survey commissioned by NIVEA VISAGE

Social Networks Make Teen Girls Sexually Bolder : Teenage girls are more likely to use online networking to make sexual advances, a new survey commissioned by NIVEA VISAGE® YOUNG has revealed

LONDON (PRWEB) September 2, 2008

There is a marked difference in the behaviour of 16 to 18 year-olds in their use of SNCs such as Bebo, Facebook and MySpace, compared to older ages, with 42% finding it easier to express themselves sexually online.

Conducted by YouGov, the survey of 2,000 girls aged 16 to 24 was carried out through NIVEA VISAGE YOUNG’s FYImag. More survey results and a video of Tracey Cox answering questions are on the FYImag website at http://www.fyimag.co.uk/survey.

Sex and relationship expert, Tracey Cox, a regular contributor to FYImag, said that whilst it’s not fair to say that ‘poking’ (sending an online signal to show you find someone attractive) makes people promiscuous, there certainly needs to be some policing.

The internet and SNCs have also made it easier for teenagers to share and find information about sex. 68% of 16 to18 year olds said it was less embarrassing to find out about sex online.

“This is a far cry from the traditional view of teenagers being awkward, shy and ill informed about sex. There’s no doubt SNCs have had a dramatic impact on teenage sexuality and their access to information about sex ” commented Ms Cox.

But there are worrying trends. One third of teenagers said they’d had sex at a party and think characters from the TV show Skins, who are sexually active and experiment with drugs, are a true reflection of teens today.

Ms Cox concluded: “On the positive side, teens are much better informed about sex and almost all research suggests access to good, non-judgemental information decreases the incidence of pregnancy and STIs. The negative is that some lack the maturity and judgement to deal with a lot of the information they’re now exposed to.”

United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up Unite For Girls Tour Arrives In Los Angeles

United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up Unite For Girls Tour Arrives In Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA (Vocus) November 5, 2010

The United Nations Foundation is taking its Unite for Girls Tour to Los Angeles to help introduce its newest campaign – Girl Up – which encourages American girls to channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for their counterparts in the developing world. The Girl Up campaign aims to raise awareness about the 600 million adolescent girls living in developing countries who lack access to basic needs such as education and health care, and encourages American girls to give back.

“It is truly shocking that for every dollar spent on global development, less than one half of one cent is dedicated to resources that will improve life for teen girls,” said Elizabeth McKee Gore, Executive Director, United Nations Foundation. “A campaign for girls, by girls could change that. We are excited to be in Los Angeles among such creative, energetic and passionate girls who can truly make a difference in the lives of girls halfway across the world.”

Through Girl Up’s support, girls around the world will have the opportunity to become educated, healthy, safe, counted and positioned to be the next generation of leaders. Funds raised through Girl Up will support proven United Nations programs that help the hardest-to-reach girls in such countries as Malawi, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Liberia. Campaign supporters are encouraged to give a “High Five” to girls in developing countries by taking five minutes to learn about the issues facing girls or by donating $ 5 or more to provide girls with such basic needs as access to school supplies, clean water, life-saving health services, safety from violence and more.

“The case for girls is so compelling. If you can give a girl the smallest chance, she can make the biggest change,” said Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, a Girl Up Global Advocate. “This program will give a girl in California the opportunity to help a girl in Malawi buy school supplies.”

The Unite for Girls Tour is holding a Pep Rally today at the Marlborough School in Los Angeles. There will be special appearances by Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan; Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa; Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Rebecca Soni; High School Musical star, Monique Coleman; and, actress/model, Amber Heard. Marlborough School is part of the National Coalition of Girls School, a Girl Up Founding Partner. Marlborough students will be attending the Pep Rally along with girls and boys from other LA schools and non-profit organizations such as Camp Fire USA Orange County Council, Archer School for Girls, and Partnership for Los Angeles Schools that support Girl Up.

“As a parent of a teenage girl, it is my pleasure and a true honor to be involved with the Girl Up campaign,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “Even from far away, teens in Los Angeles can make a real difference to girls in developing countries.”

Girls attending the Pep Rally will have the opportunity to travel through an interactive display with a passport in hand, to learn about girls just like them all around the world, and how they can help make the future brighter for their counterparts in developing countries. The Unite for Girls Tour will be visiting metropolitan areas across the nation to energize U.S. girls to take action in support of their counterparts overseas. An impressive group of Champions, Global Advocates and founding partners has joined the Girl Up movement to improve the lives of girls in developing countries, and will participate in the Tour throughout the year and next year.
