Inspire USA Launches Reach Out’s National “Don’t Just Stand By” Teen Facebook App Developer Competition at SXSW

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 12, 2012

The Inspire USA Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the youth mental health site ReachOut.com, with the support of the ESA Foundation, today launched the National “Don’t Just Stand By” Teen Facebook App Developer Competition during the Reaching Teens on the Digital Streets panel at SXSW. This competition calls on teens 13-17 to create a Facebook app that will help inform and empower potential bystanders of cyberbullying to take action.

Cyberbullying continues to be a challenging issue for teens and young adults happening through email, chat rooms, online social networking, instant messaging and web pages. Cyberbullying can happen to anyone, and the bully can act anonymously. People can also be bullied online by groups of people, such as classmates or members of an online community. According to Pew Internet’s August 2011 Tracking Survey a majority of teens say their own reaction has been to ignore mean behavior when they see it on social media. Two-thirds of teens who have witnessed online cruelty have also witnessed others joining in and 21% say they have also joined in the harassment.

“We believe that teens will be most responsive to solutions created by their peers, and that the Facebook apps submitted will hopefully inspire youth to speak up and take action against cyberbullying when they see it,” said Anastasia Goodstein, Director of Digital Programs for the Inspire USA Foundation. “We feel that since most U.S. teens are on Facebook, it’s the natural platform to have them build these apps on and share them with their friends.”

Through June 1, ReachOut.com challenges young developers between the ages of 13-17 to help young people speak out against cyberbullying. Each entry must:

Focus on people aged 16-24 who would be potential bystanders to cyberbullying in online spaces/communities
Increase understanding of what cyberbullying is and the role of bystanders
Empower young people to want to make online spaces/communities more positive and safe for everyone
Include a specific call-to-action for potential bystanders
Focus on the positive, do not use negative language or triggering images depicting cyberbullying, self harm or suicide that could re-traumatize victims/survivors

Three prizes will be awarded in Reach Out’s National “Don’t Just Stand By” Teen Facebook App Developer Competition:

First Place = $ 2,000 plus five hours of virtual mentorship from an adult programmer
Second Place = $ 1500 and one hour of virtual mentorship from an adult programmer
Third Place = $ 500 and one hour of virtual mentorship from an adult programmer

Programmers will be matched with mentors according to the type of app they develop. Inspire USA has partnered with Teens in Tech Labs, which provides tools and resources to young entrepreneurs world-wide to help encourage entrepreneurship at a young age, to help promote the competition.

Biased One-Sided News Comedy Show Has Just About Everyone Laughing

Palm Springs, CA (PRWEB) February 12, 2012

DUNK TANK NEWS is a new comedy series written, directed, edited and hosted by Brian Shotwell. In each episode, Shotwell takes a popular person in the media and puts them in a virtual dunk tank. So far Justin Bieber, Matt Lauer, Snooki, Rick Santorum, and Kim Kardashian have all been dunked. Shotwell wanted to make a comedy show that spoke to people who wanted to just laugh and he saw a huge opportunity to start finding celebrity targets to dunk. Shotwell was a comedian from a very young age and was named class clown in his junior high school yearbook. He performed his first comedy routine at Laughs Unlimited in Sacremento and was hooked after that. Shotwell had the idea for DUNK TANK NEWS in 2008 and started developing the concept. He has currently produced six episodes and plans to continue and release many more.

Brian Shotwell is an award-winning independent filmmaker and SAG actor residing in the Coachella Valley and has been in the film industry since 1990. He got his start picking up trash on a HBO film titled White Mile, which lead to a series of industry jobs. Later he successfully produced many of his own film projects featuring stars and celebrities. His animated film titled AUTOMATON (2008), garnered a 1st place for Best Sci-Fi Animated Short at the California International Animation Film Festival. In addition his film DEFCON 2012 (2009) was a 1st place winner at the 2010 New York Independent Film Festival and has been translated into Chinese, Thai, and German languages. Brian is now reaching the peak of his career as a producer, actor, producer, writer and director. In the summer of 2010 Brian released an independent Sci-Fi feature film titled ENEMY MIND, which stars the voice talent of Oscar Winning Actor Ernest Borgnine.

In the spring of 2011 Brian co-produced and starred in a comedy titled PINK SQUIRRELS, which enlisted local talent and crew and played to a sold out audience of 540. Brian also produced and released in 2012 a thriller titled HOUSE OF MIRRORS, which stars Josette Pacino, the sister of legendary Hollywood actor Al Pacino. In 2010 Brian was honored by Palm Springs Life Magazine as one of the “40 Under 40” most influential people in the community and appeared on a two part Emmy winning episode of the Oprah Show which she named one of the greatest shows in her 25 year history. His appearance on the show led to the production of a powerful documentary about men dealing with childhood abuse titled THE HEALING JOURNEY, to be released in November 2012.

The DUNK TANK NEWS show has been a highlight for Shotwell, because entertaining people and making them laugh has been a life passion. According to Shotwell, the world can never get enough comedy.

Recession Lingers–Forget Happy; Try Just a Little Bit Better. Better Because Global Movement Launches With Smiles & Inspirational Stories

Inspired by the Dalai Lama, Ginny Hutchinson and Cathy Haffner Launch Better Because Global Movement

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 2, 2009

Something contagious is in the air, and we’re not talking about the flu. The good for your health Better Because movement is taking off, led by former bankers Ginny Hutchinson and Cathy Haffner.

A year ago the two pals, moms, and self proclaimed “rat racers”, Ginny (age 49, Seattle) and Cathy (age 47, San Antonio) jumped ship from their Fortune 100 careers to launch Better Because where in just a few weeks over 4,000 folks have friended them on Facebook and sent in their smiles and stories from around the globe of what their life is “better because of” today. Kate’s Paperie has snapped-up the duo’s book, “Better Because of You” and Nordstrom will carry it for the holidays. Proceeds from book sales support “Room to Read”, a non-profit that builds libraries for children in need in Asia and Africa.

In NYC, cosmetic genius Trish McEvoy just read their book and ordered 50 more to give to her friends. In Seattle, Union Bank Mortgage Consultant Aaron Tyler purchased 32 books for each of his co-workers and couldn’t believe the response– just the cover put a smile on their faces.

Cathy who went from being a baby living in a bamboo hut in the Philippines, to rocking a Fortune 100 career, was driven to ditch it after seeing the terrifying impact of teen depression in her own daughter’s life. Ginny, a CMO and mountain climber, was moved to tears by the Dalai Lama.

The duo’s message? “In these tough times happiness may be tough to achieve, but all of us can do just a little bit better.”

“Bombarded by depressing news on a daily basis about the economy, teen depression, and more, we’re taking positive action,” states Haffner. “We’ve been inspired by so many people who do small things each day to better enjoy life. Now, we’re on a mission to propel a positive movement based on simple ways, like sharing a smile, to make life just a little bit better.”

Priced under $ 25 and perfect for holiday gift giving, “Better Because of You” offers true life stories that provide the reader with “bite-sized” tips and inspirational quotes to make a big difference in their life. Hutchinson explains, “We’re here to ignite an inspiring and fun groundswell that illustrates how just one individual can be an irresistible force for positive change.”

In addition to the release of their book the company also is launching a line of Better Because merchandise, developing a film, and is in the planning stages of creating a television series examining commonalities between happy people the world around.

“The Next Big Thing Just Flew Into The App Store” as SPACE KIWI Takes Flight! ORRO, Inc. is Proud to Announce SPACE KIWI’s App Store Introduction

“The Next Big Thing Just Flew Into The App Store” as SPACE KIWI Takes Flight! ORRO, Inc. is Proud to Announce SPACE KIWI’s App Store Introduction

Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 31, 2011

Space Kiwi by ORRO Apps is a fun-filled forward-scrolling arcade-style game that “might just be the cutest bird-related game around”. It hit the App Store December 2011 as ORRO Inc.’s initial offering. ORRO’s creative force is Boston-area high school sophomore Eli Bock, who brings his animation, musical, and technical skills together in this tour de force of gaming ingenuity.

Space Kiwi represents the first iPhone game app with fully animated characters’ features. Unlike Angry Birds (with its fixed faces), Space Kiwi is awash with undulating, often menacing creatures who will keep any gamer on his toes.

Or, as (above-quoted) Appadvice.com’s review continues: “The artwork is as adorable as can be. Backgrounds consist of pastel hues with puffy imagery. Space Kiwi himself looks like Q-Bert with a kawaii (Japanese for cute) makeover. The electronica soundtrack fits perfectly with the design and theme of the game. Overall, this universal game is entertaining and challenging. The cute factor is so high that even the most hardened of hearts will melt, but the action is so good that teenaged boys won’t be embarrassed to brag about their high scores. Space Kiwi is sure to be the next big hit.”

From conception to final product, it has been a labor of love for the game’s teen developer, long-skilled in animation (see TodPole.com). Space Kiwi combines his talents: high-strategy game-challenges, captivating music, and vivid artwork. While these comprehensive efforts inform the game’s thrills, it was his maintenance summer-job’s effort that financed and translated into Space Kiwi’s final push through AppPartners (NY). In every way, his hard work pays off.

In actual game-play, gyro tilt-controls help Space Kiwi avoid obstacles and collect rewards. Alert aim-and-shoot ripostes counter oncoming creatures’ attacks. Space Kiwi needs adept maneuvering to avoid simultaneous enemies of different powers and from all directions, with each (of 60) levels harder than the last.

The kiwi, known as a flightless bird, now soars as Space Kiwi.
