Helping Make the New School Year Safer for Kids! Concerned author offers his book on sleep disorders, ‘Shout! Sleep!,’ free until 9/15/05

Category : Teen Problems

NC (PRWEB) August 14, 2005

A North Carolina state study found that drivers age 25 and younger cause more than one-half of all sleep-related auto crashes. Robert E Peterson RPSGT, author of two e-books on sleep disorders, thinks parents and kids should know the simple and sometimes frightening facts about teenagers and sleep as the new school year begins.

Citing a recent article by the National Sleep Foundation, “Too Many Teens May Be Sleepy Behind Their Desks- And Behind The Wheel,” Mr. Peterson states that the teen’s biological clock is naturally set to go to bed and sleep later.

Mr. Peterson quotes Richard L. Gelula, executive director of the NSF, “A teen’s life and his/her ability to learn can be affected by the timing of that first morning school bell. Contrary to many beliefs, the early morning sleepiness teens experience isn’t because their lazy. They are sleep deprived, but it isn’t necessarily parties, video games and other activities keeping them awake at night. It’s their biological clocks.”

Mr. Peterson says that most teens need an average of 9.25 hours of sleep each night. But the sleep patterns of adolescents are affected by a phase delay, a natural tendency toward going to sleep and awakening later. A 1998 study showed that 40 percent of teens go to bed after 11 p.m. on school nights, and one-fourth sleep less than 6.5 hours on school nights.

A troubling consequence of sleep deprivation at any age is drowsy driving. But for teens, their sleep deprivation and inexperience behind the wheel can make for a particularly lethal combination.

Not Just Teens:

Mr. Peterson went on to say that sleep disorders and poor sleep hygiene effect kids at early ages as well. The early wake up time for most children is a major concern to sleep disorder experts. Government and Health officials are trying to get school start times pushed later.

Peterson’s first e-book: “Professional Guide To Sleep Disorders Management” is an e-book written for the healthcare professional. Studies clearly show that most doctors do not inquire of their patient’s sleep. This book outlines the screening procedures to identify patients who are not getting proper sleep. Studies also show doctors are well aware of sleep problems and list sleep as a high priority. Most doctors also stated they would make sleep a higher priority if simple diagnostic screening and treatment tools were available. Peterson says “Professional Guide To Sleep Disorders Management” is the exact tool doctors have been wanting. The Guide is available at www.sleepebooks.com and www.amazon.com

Mr. Peterson feels his second e-book: “Shout! Sleep!” is a must read for both parents and teens. “It is up to the individual parent and teen to understand sleep disorders.”

“Shout! Sleep!” explains sleep problems and will help everyone have a healthier, safer and more productive year. “Shout! Sleep!” is also available online at www.sleepebooks.com and www.amazon.com

Essential strategies to keep children and teens safe online

As our children and teens race down the onramp to the Information Superhighway, many parents feel left behind in the dust. News stories about online sexual predators, child pornography, cyberbullies, hate groups, gaming addiction, and other dangers that lurk in the online world make us feel increasingly concerned about what our children are doing (and with whom) in cyberspace. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Internet safety expert Nancy Willard provides you with need-to-know information about those online dangers, and she gives you the practical parenting strategies necessary to help children and teens learn to use the Internet safely and responsibly.

Parents protect younger children by keeping them in safe places, teaching them simple safety rules, and paying close attention. As children grow, we help them gain the knowledge, skills, and values to make good choices–choices that will keep them safe and show respect for the rights of others. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Willard shows you how those same strategies can be translated from the real world to the cyberworld, and that you don’t have to learn advanced computer skills to put them into effect. As you work on these strategies with your child, you will also discover that remaining engaged with what your children are doing online is much more valuable than any blocking software you could buy.

“Willard blends the perspectives of a wise parent and a serious scholar about issues related to Internet behavior and safety. . . . Pick up the book, open it to any random page, and you will find on that page or nearby a wealth of helpful advice and useful commentary on the cyberreality facing our children and on how to deal with any of the issues she’s identified.”
–Dick Thornburgh, J.D., former U.S. Attorney General; chair, National Academy of Sciences Committee on Youth Pornography and the Internet

“Simply put, this book is a must-read for anyone–parents, educators, law enforcement, and policymakers alike–concerned with the critical issue of children’s internet safety and what to do about it.”
–Douglas Levin, senior director of education policy, Cable in the Classroom

New Orleans Fitness Center Joins Louie’s Kids in Fight against Childhood Obesity

Category : Teen Fitness

(PRWEB) July 17, 2005

Cross Gates Club, a comprehensive fitness center located in Slidell, a suburb of New Orleans, has provided an area teenager in need with a six-month scholarship to its all-fitness Pontchartrain location.

Another six-month membership has been pledged by childhood obesity advocate group, LouieÂ’s Kids, on the condition that the teen makes a significant change in her weight during the first six months.

LouieÂ’s Kids, founded by Louis Yuhasz, provides overweight and obese children and teenagers scholarships to attend weight loss and behavior modification camp. The New Orleans teenÂ’s application was one of the dozens Yuhasz receives every year from overweight and obese teens, desperate for help.

Financially, the organization can only distribute so many scholarships a year. For those children who are not selected, Yuhasz works to find other ways to make a healthy difference in their lives.

The New Orleans teen expressed a desire to join a gym, so Yuhasz set out to find her one. He contacted Cross Gates Club and gave them her story, sending Pontchartrain managers Joey Sanders and Dion Grossnickle some background information on LouieÂ’s Kids as well as a copy of the teenÂ’s application letter, which, as Sanders said, was all it took to bring them on board in helping this teen.

“Cross Gates is always trying to get out the message of health and fitness,” said Sanders. “We are a community-based organization and when we have the opportunity to help someone in the area, we are happy to.”

The six month fitness scholarship includes enrollment in Cross Gates’ “Commit to Fit” program. The teen will meet with a certified trainer three times over the course of 12 weeks. First to evaluate her current weight and health and determine a plan for her, then to familiarize her with the actual workout equipment, and finally to asses her progress and determine whether or not the program is working for her.

“It’s awful having to turn any child down for a scholarship, but it’s great to be able to provide another way to get these kids off to a good start in changing their lifestyles,” said Yuhasz. “This amazing girl in New Orleans is anxious for a change and the people at Cross Gates Club totally stepped up to the plate.”

Yuhasz founded Louie’s Kids in honor of his father “Big Louie,” who weighed nearly 550 pounds at the time of his death in 2001. The number of scholarships available each year depends on the private donations and monies generated through fundraisers. This year, Yuhasz expects to send eight children to camp on scholarships.

It has been estimated that this generation of children will be the first to have a lower life expectancy than their parents due to complications of obesity. LouieÂ’s Kids aims to reverse this trend by helping overweight and obese children make healthy changes in time to impact their futures. The program ends with a strengthening segment of push-ups, abdominal exercises, and beginning yoga. Effervescent Austin provides adequate verbal coaching to a dozen kids who perform the moves. This moderately fast-paced program assumes its participants are fairly fit at the onset and in only a few cases offers reduced levels of participation for varying abilities. Don’t miss the DVD’s bonus episode, “Family Fit,” a 20-minute workout designed for families to do together. It follows the same format as the “Fit Kids” routine, with the addition of a few exercises that require partnering for resistance training. One segment employs a basketball (or similar sized ball) which is the only equipment necessary. “Quality fitness, doing it together,” is Austin’s peppy mantra, which results in a corny but clever way to get families off the couch. How And When To Talk To Your Kids About Sex?

Category : Teen dating

Fort Worth, Texas (PRWEB) December 7, 2009

Parent coaches and educators are often questioned by parents about when to talk to their children about sex and what to say? Some parents are afraid to broach the subject and feel their kids won’t listen. To respond to this growing trend in the parent coaching/education industry, the Academy for Coaching Parents is offering a new specialty niche for all parents as well as teachers, counselors, coaches and others who work with tweens and teens. The four-week teleconference course, Before They Know It All: Talking to Tweens and Teens About Sexuality starts January 4, 2010.

Former health educator and school counselor, Alan Carson now serves as a consultant and certified parent coach to those who wish to receive training in this area. As the author of the course, he explains, “I created Before They Know It All because I saw that a comprehensive sexuality education curriculum is sorely needed to assist parents and tweens and teens with their sexuality as they navigate through a very unhealthy adolescent culture. I understand what kids need to hear. This program addresses all essential topics within the context of the current teen culture and takes into consideration what the research tells us with respect to teen attitudes, beliefs and behavior.”

Topics in this training conference include media’s influence, teen’s behavior and attitudes, sexting, the hook-up culture, dating, and communication, and more. Mr. Carson indicates that “This course will assist professionals in understanding the teen culture kids are growing up in, and in turn assist parents in becoming knowledgeable, confident sexuality educators with their children. The damaging “Hook-Up” culture is powerful, and parents need to understand the decisions their children face with before they can be influential leaders. Research with teens consistently tells us that teens want to know what their parents believe regarding the major issues that confront them.”

Mr. Carson is offering three previews of this material for those considering the course”

1. Free preview teleconference with Certified Coach for Parents Alan Carson on Tuesday, December 8th, 2009, 8 PM ET or Wednesday, December 16, 2009, 8 PM ET

2. To register for the free preview teleconference pr listen to a free podcast interview with Alan Carson    http://www.academyforcoachingparents.com/acpi_site/sexuality_class.htm

3. Contact Mr. Carson for more information about the free Power Point review of the class content and philosophy: www.coachforparents.net or Email: parentslead(at)mac(dot)com

Teen Expert Helps Kids Learn from Obama, Live from D.C.

“Be Confident in Who You Are” by Annie Fox

Ferndale, WA (Vocus) January 7, 2009

Teen Expert and author Annie Fox will be in Washington, D.C. for the inauguration and is available for interviews live from Washington or her hotels in Baltimore and Virginia. She’ll also be blogging at http://www.blog.anniefox.com daily with news from the inauguration and tips for kids wishing to follow in the president-elect’s historic footsteps.

Annie Fox communicates with thousands of teens, parents, and teachers every month via Hey Terra!, her online alter ego. She knows that kids long to feel more self-confident and self-assured, and that parents want to ease their struggles. What can they glean from the election of Barack Obama, thought by many to be a self-made success?

Annie offers teens the tools to become the kind of people they aspire to be.

Who: Annie Fox, award-winning author, national speaker, and educator.

What: Annie helps kids (and the adults in their lives) learn from and model the thoughtful, careful ascent of our president-elect. Many kids feel inspired by Obama’s election, but may be feeling at a loss as to how to translate it to their own lives. Parents have often told their children they could strive to be president. With that dream suddenly more meaningful to a wider population, the advice Annie has given teens (and their parents) for over a decade now takes on new meaning: be true to yourself and to the principles that guide you and you have everything you need to become a leader in your own right.

When: January 16-21, 2009

Contact: Annie Fox, 415-999-6388

Why talk to Annie? Many in our country have experienced a tremendous feeling of hope since the election, but how are teens affected? They deserve to experience this hope, too. Annie can talk about how.

Among the many topics Annie can discuss are:

What it means to be a leader worth emulating, and how you can become one.
How kids can build their leadership skills, and how parents can hinder or help.
How kids can develop a strong sense of morality, self-esteem, and individuality, and how parents can hinder or help.
How kids and grown-ups can get involved in the president-elect’s plan for rebuilding both our nation and our nation’s image worldwide.
How the choices you make regarding your life’s path can have an impact years later. (As Annie says about Obama, “He could have done something far more lucrative out of Harvard Law School, but he had a vision.”)

About Annie Fox: Annie Fox (http://www.anniefox.com) is an award-winning author, national speaker, and educator. As the voice of “Hey Terra,” an online teen counselor, Annie has answered more than 10,000 emails from teens and tweens around the world. Annie also travels the country to speak to groups of teen students, parents, and teachers on the issues facing young people today, everything from dating and sex to cheating in school to expressing individuality.
