An Important Message from Ellen About Bullying.

Category : Teen

It’s Time to End Teenage Bullying I am devastated by the death of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi. If you don’t know, Tyler was a bright student at Rutgers University whose life was senselessly cut short. He was outed as being gay on the internet and he killed himself. Something must be done. This month alone, there has been a shocking number of news stories about teens who have been teased and bullied and then committed suicide; like 13-year-old Seth Walsh in Tehachapi, California. Asher Brown, 13, of Cypress, Texas and 15-year-old Billy Lucas in Greensberg, Indiana. This needs to be a wake-up call to everyone: teenage bullying and teasing is an epidemic in this country, and the death rate is climbing. One life lost in this senseless way is tragic. Four lives lost is a crisis. And these are just the stories we hear about. How many other teens have we lost? How many others are suffering in silence? Being a teenager and figuring out who you are is hard enough without someone attacking you. My heart is breaking for their families, their friends and for a society that continues to let this happen. These kids needed us. We have an obligation to change this. There are messages everywhere that validate this kind of bullying and taunting and we have to make it stop. We can’t let intolerance and ignorance take another kid’s life. I want anyone out there who feels different and alone to know that I know how you feel. There is help out there. You can find support in your community. If

National TO SAVE A LIFE Week Announced to Touch 1 Million Lives with a Message of Hope for Hurting Teens

Category : Teen Facebook

Oceanside, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2010

During the week of September 6-12, corresponding with National Suicide Prevention Week, NewSong Pictures and Outreach Films, the creators of the #1 faith-based film of 2010 To Save A Life plan to use the movie as a vehicle to save lives and inspire teens to reach out to their communities and engage with the hurting and lonely in their midst.

Since its theatrical release in January, To Save A Life has impacted over 600,000 teens, youth workers, coaches, pastors and parents who viewed the film in theaters. Thousands have written in to the To Save A Life Web site (ToSaveALifeMovie.com/stories) to share their response to the film. And just under 160,000 have created an active community on the To Save A Life Facebook page sharing their compelling and often heartbreaking personal stories, and supporting each other as they navigate the challenges of life.

Topically, the film fearlessly tackles a number of subjects that teens confront on a daily basis, including depression, suicide, bullying, teen pregnancy, cutting, substance abuse and body image. High school is a much more challenging place than it was just a few years ago, and teens need help and guidance in navigating these challenges.

Because of this, the teams at Outreach have set an objective of seeing one million lives touched during this week through the hosting of To Save A Life events and movie screenings across America.

The concept is simple. During this week, churches, families, pastors, teachers, coaches, mentors and teens themselves are encouraged to invite their friends to watch To Save A Life with them. The goal is to have the film shown in over 10,000 locations, where every teen in America can see the movie either in a church, home, store, classroom, auditorium or theater.

Afterwards, participants are challenged to go to the next level. It’s not enough to just talk about the change you want to see—To Save A Life Week is about action, and viewers are encouraged to be a catalyst for this change. Some students may start a “Lunch Club” to help befriend the lonely kids in their school. Some may start actively inviting new people to their youth group or club meetings. Others may plan events with experts or mentors who can help teens navigate the challenges in their lives. A new school year is never easy for teens in crisis—To Save A Life Week can help ease some of these tensions while providing a solid message of hope for those who are hurting.

To help teens and those who care for them, Outreach has created a series of tools designed to get the process and conversation started, including inspirational books, novels, social media tools, curriculums and topical helps. Several Web sites, including ToSaveALifeLeaders.com, can help leaders looking for ideas and resources. Outreach is dedicated to maintaining the momentum of the To Save A Life movement and inspiring a generation to reach out to hurting and lonely people.

To Save A Life releases on DVD and Blu-ray August 3 through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment/Affirm Films. To Save A Life is rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving teen suicide, teen drinking, some drug content, disturbing images and sexuality.

Scott Fried’s Message Resonates with Teens Around the World

Category : Teen Gossip

Scott Fried

(Vocus) July 16, 2009

He’s a speaker, an innovator and a great communicator who has earned the attention of thousands of teens in his travels across the U.S. and the world. Scott Fried, who has been HIV positive for more than 20 years, has launched a new tour that speaks to teens about abstinence, safer sex, self-mutilation, substance abuse and dozens of other timely issues facing kids today.

Fried is preparing to release his newest book in September. He is the author of two other acclaimed books, “My Invisible Kingdom: Letters from the Secret Lives of Teens” and “Talking with Teens about AIDS, Love and Staying Alive.” Fried’s new book, “A Private Midnight: A Teenager’s Scrapbook of Secrets” is a journal for teens, a scrapbook of anonymous answers to questions he has posed to thousands of his students.

Fried has earned accolades from dozens of leaders and organizations around the world for connecting with teens and impacting their lives.

Heidi Tarshish, program director of the Na-asesh V’nishma Program at the Temple Israel in Minneapolis, said that Fried addresses major social issues in a way that engages teens and young adults.

“The messages that he brings to our kids are about really valuing yourself so that you don’t put yourself in high-risk situations,” Tarshish said. “Kids really relate to him well. They appreciate him and they appreciate his honesty. They feel he’s a genuine person who is interested in them.”

Marc Gross, 30, met Fried while a teen camp counselor at the Jewish Community Center in Staten Island, N.Y. He credits Fried with helping him through “a difficult time” in his teen years.

“Scott taught me that I was someone…not just important, but also someone who deserved to be loved,” he said. “He’s the reason I’m proud to say that I waited to have sex. I decided that because he told me to treat my body as something of a temple. I won’t let anyone in unless they respect who they are and have the same values.”

Emily Lasner, 21, of Minneapolis, has known Fried for eight years. Through his books and speaking events, Fried has the uncanny ability to relate to teens and young adults that leads them to listen and take his words to heart, Lasner said.

“Scott is not only a teacher to teens around the world, but he serves as a hero and mentor for them, and he brings his unique gifts as a speaker and friend to teens and adults alike,” she said.

Fried speaks to former President Bill Clinton’s office of interns every year.

“I am grateful for Scott Fried’s efforts to educate young people and the message of hope and support that he imparts to his audiences,” Clinton said. “For eager young people, there is no greater opportunity than the chance to learn from a life devoted to the human interest and to realize the immeasurable dividends when one invests passion, optimism and commitment into his work.”

Fried is available for media interviews and speaking engagements around the U.S. To contact Fried, visit www.scottfried.com or call 212.465.2646.

Does One Tree Hill Send a Poor Message About Teen Pregnancy?

Category : Teen Pregnancy

There’s not one television show that can please all the critics all at once, that’s a fact. Recently, television reviewer for the New York Times, Gina Bellafante wrote an article about One Tree Hill’s fifth season, and in it accusing the coming of age drama of displaying “an almost aggressive aversion to moralizing about teenage pregnancy.” She’s referring to Haley’s (Bethany Joy Galleoti) recent pregnancy, claiming that it “[refuses] to lay out the grim consequences of premature motherhood, [and] wants to make fans on either end of the political spectrum stick their heads in fiery hampers.” With the recent events in the media, including 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears’ pregnancy, is One Tree Hill really biased in showing just the joyous side of young motherhood?

Bellafante also took offense to the lack of realism in Haley’s struggles. She wrote, “Haley, a teacher, isn’t applying for food stamps or stripping to keep her child in clean pajamas. She is living instead in a nicely appointed house, dealing with middle-aged problems.”

Bellafante also pointed out that because the show skipped the college years, we did not get to see Haley go through all the struggles of pursuing her education while being a young mother. Bellafante wrote, “we never get to see how Haley balanced psych finals and colic, keg parties and vaccinations, and just having to say no, presumably, to any chance of a junior year abroad in a hedonistic Western European capital.”

Surely, Bellafante has a point. However, we must take into consideration that One Tree Hill is a show that never really thrived in reality. In fact, this series is more of escapist, soapy fantasy. If one wants to watch a show depicting teenagers with real teenage problems, then head over to NBC’s Friday Night Lights.

As for Haley’s struggles, or lack thereof, One Tree Hill may have overlooked this, and all the pieces of Haley’s life may seem unrealistically perfect. Nonetheless Bellafante admits that she can’t resist the addictive nature of the series. “One Tree Hill is a no-arrogance, no-entitlement zone and I’m (shamefully) happy to pull up and park.”
