Oxford Open Learning Announces Distance Learning Courses Are More Popular Than Ever in 2011 – Including Celebrities

Jessica Alba

London (PRWEB UK) 21 December 2011

School bullying is something that a lot of children have to endure, for many the only answer is to leave school and study from home. According to Oxford Open Learning, an increasing number of students (and celebrities) opt to continue or complete their education by taking distance learning courses.

Bullying is a term that stands for overbearing, intimidating or aggressive treatment. Everyone has had to face it at least at one point in their lives and we all know how it feels. The environment in which it manifests most frequently is education, with students who had been bullied as teenagers saying that they had suffered long term, harmful effects lasting into adulthood.

When students feel unsafe, intimidated and tense in their school environment, apart from it being personally traumatizing, it also leads to a ruined, unproductive educational experience. Bullied students tend to be introverted, unfocused, disoriented and afraid to express themselves academically during classes. As a result they struggle with their schoolwork. For students who just can’t cope with the bullying at school, there is an answer: learning from home. Distance learning courses are now increasingly popular, they give students the chance of achieving the qualifications that they deserve.

It is not just bullied students that turn to learning from home, many celebrities turn to education at home too.

Jessica Alba: Being an A-list actress who started her busy career at an early age, Jessica Alba didn’t have the time to deal with a standard school schedule, and instead took online and distance courses in order to complete her high-school education and graduated with her G.E.D.

James Franco: The young actor, known for the notable roles he played in movies such as Spiderman, Pineapple Express and 127 Hours, found distance learning the most suitable for his lifestyle. He decided to do Masters of Fine Arts program with an emphasis in creative writing online.

Shaquille O’Neil: The basketball legend dropped out of college after his junior year, but not before promising to his mother that he would one day finish his studies. Meanwhile he ended up not only getting his bachelor degree, by taking home study courses, but also completing a Master’s in Business Administration online.

Marcia Cross: The ginger actress is known for playing the character Bree in the hit show Desperate Housewives. Although a busy woman, she found it convenient to finish her Masters in Psychology online.

Lil Wayne: Rapper Lil Wayne started his career during high school by joining Money Records super-group “The Hot Boys” tour. He completed his education however by obtaining his G.E.D. by distance learning and consequently decided to pursue a degree in political science online. In an interview for VH1 the rapper declared: “I’m not going back to school. I’m really going to school for the first time.”

Having the flexibility of studying in your own free time is just one of the advantages of learning from home. Have a look online to see if distance learning courses would be suitable for you or your child.

Mystery Date: Open the Door to Reveal Your Perfect Match …Or Mismatch! [BOX SET]

  • ,,

The classic game of Mystery Date is back to celebrate it’s 40th Anniversary! Get ready for your date by collecting three cards to complete an outfit. The first player to open the door and match their outfit to their date wins the game! Features updated photography and images.Plenty of classic board games have been updated over the years to varying degrees of success. An electronic talking component will be added or a litany of sound effects will be introduced to make game play more dramatic. And while some updates succeed in making the game more fun or at least more appealing to today’s tech-savvy kids, many others overcomplicate things and actually reduce the fun factor. Mystery Date, aside from a bit of updated photography is still pretty much the same game it’s always been as players move their pieces around a simple game board and then open a door to see which boy they’ll imaginarily go on a date with: the popular snowboarder, the suave fellow in a tux, or the nerd carrying a load of books. It’s a bit disappointing that the academic kid must be seen as the loser in this game but at least the game’s makers have kept tradition alive. –Charlie Williams

Australia’s First Weight Loss Camp for Children to Open This Summer

Category : Teen Fitness

Reedley, CA (PRWEB) November 1, 2007 -

Wellspring Camps, the leading organization of treatment programs for overweight and obese youth, today announced the opening of Wellspring Australia, the first summer weight loss camp in Australia.

Wellspring Australia will serve teens ages 12-18 for 2-week and 4-week courses starting 30 December. Students will benefit from decades of scientific research and the unprecedented weight loss outcomes demonstrated by thousands of young people at Wellspring’s 10 other programmes in America and England.

Wellspring’s California programme was the focus of the seven-part television series “Teen Fit Camp,” which aired last May and June on Network Ten. “Teen Fit Camp” followed the emotional journey of six Australian teens struggling with obesity.

“What allowed the six Australian students profiled in ‘Teen Fit Camp’ to be so successful,” said Dr Daniel S. Kirschenbaum, Wellspring’s clinical director and a professor at Northwestern University Medical School in America, “is that Wellspring addresses the combination of factors that lead to weight gain and interfere with long-term success at weight loss. Through a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, nutrition and culinary education, and an incredibly supportive and enjoyable introduction to healthy eating and activity habits, evaluation studies indicate that Wellspring students lose an average of 2 kg. per week while enrolled, and continue to lose weight after returning home.”

According to Wellspring Australia Program Director Todd Duncan, the incredible interest generated by “Teen Fit Camp” convinced Wellspring to launch Wellspring Australia. “After Teen Fit Camp aired, we had a number of Australian families enroll their children in Wellspring’s programme in Hawaii in July and August. Of course, with nearly 1 in 4 Australian children and teens overweight or obese, many more Australian families would benefit from having the world’s leading treatment programme for overweight and obese teens much closer to home.”

Wellspring Australia provides 2-week and 4-week courses over the summer holiday, starting 30 December and 13 January. Like the Wellspring California programme featured on “Teen Fit Camp,” Wellspring Australia is an expedition-based programme. Students participate in adventure-based activities such as surfing, caving, canyoneering, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and camping.

Wellspring Australia is a program of Wellspring Camps. To learn more about Wellspring Camps visit http://www.wellspringcamps.com. Wellspring programs include Academy of the Sierras California, Academy of the Sierras North Carolina, Wellspring New York, Wellspring Adventure Camp, Wellspring Adventure Camp California, Wellspring Texas, Wellspring Hawaii, Wellspring Wisconsin, Wellspring Family Camp, Wellspring UK and Wellspring Community Programs.

Wellspring Camps is part of the Healthy Living Division of CRC Health Group, America’s largest chemical dependency and related behavioral health organization. For more information, visit http://www.crchealth.com.
