Is MTV causing teen pregnancy rise?

Category : Teen Pregnancy

A pregnant cheerleader on the hit show Glee, real life moms on the popular MTV reality show Teen Mom…just two examples of popular television shows with story lines focusing on teen pregnancy but leaving out ways to prevent pregnancy in the first place. Could society’s fascination with these shows be a reason teen pregnancy rates are on the rise?

Miley Cyrus and Justin Gaston teen pregnancy These days it seems that the teenage triple threat has taken over every possible media outlet. Most recentely the topic in discussion is her rumored relationship with 20 year old underwear model Justin Gaston. The 16 year old Cyrus sent shocks through the airwaves last week during an interview with Ryan Seacrest when she revealed that when it comes to her supposed relationship, their families are like Whatever happens, happens. It appears that statement though, is not entirely true. Star magazine is reporting that Tish and Billy Rae Cyrus have been warning the pop princess about the consequences of a teen pregnancy-AND even pointing to Jamie Lynn Spears as the perfect example of what could go wrong. If I remember correctly it was just a few years ago that the younger Spears sister was on the fast track to a bigtime career, complete with her very own show on the Nickolodean Network…it sounds a lot like the success Miley Cyrus is currently enjoying. Star goes on to claim that Tish Cyrus and Lynn Spears had a secret meeting to chat about Jamie Lynns pregnancyof all which was followed by Billy Rae catching his daughter making out with Justin. An insider with the Cyrus family reveals that Mileys parents warn her that one bad decision could mean the end of her glamorous lifestyle. Don’t all parents have this talk with their teen-agers though? Obviously, the 411 on Miley’s relationship is all based on speculation and in all honesty

The Candie’s Foundation Raises Awareness on May 5th National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

Category : Teen Pregnancy

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 5, 2010

The Candie’s Foundation, a non-profit organization, will host numerous events and launch new multi-media campaigns aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy in honor of May 5th, the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. Downloadable photos and video will be available starting May 6th at 1pm ET at www.magicbulletmedia.com/MNR/TheCandiesFoundationMay2010.

WHAT:     The Candie’s Foundation will host a multitude of events on Wednesday, May 5th and launch new platforms aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy to honor the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.

“The Harsh Truth: Teen Moms Tell All” afternoon panel discussion at the Lighthouse International Conference Center in NYC is hosted by renowned doctor and TV personality Dr. Drew. The panel features Bristol Palin and teen moms from the hit MTV show, Teen Mom. Dr. Drew will create a compelling dialogue directly between the teen moms and high school students in the audience about teen pregnancy prevention.

During the evening, The Candie’s Foundation will host the 6th Annual “Event to Prevent,” a star-studded dinner, live auction and musical performances at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC.

WHO:    Oscar winning actress, WHOOPI GOLDBERG as event host, special guest speaker DR. DREW and performances by International pop superstar and Grammy Award nominee, NATASHA BEDINGFIELD and legendary folk/rock super group and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers CROSBY, STILLS & NASH. Additional celebrity guests include Bristol Palin, Cassie and more!

MORE:    The Candie’s Foundation will launch both a new TV PSA entitled “Back Talk Baby” as well as a “Crying Baby” iPhone app.

The new PSA takes a humorous approach to reach teens by featuring a talking baby asking his teen mom why she thinks she can go out with her friends and leave him at home. “Back Talk Baby” follows a television and print PSA released earlier this year in which Bristol Palin appears with her son Tripp and addresses the difficulties of being a teen mom. Palin also appears at the end of “Back Talk Baby.”

The free, 30 second iPhone app features a crying baby that cannot be turned off with taglines such as “Now Imagine This in the Middle of the Night.” The app is aimed at educating teens that a baby is a lifelong commitment. The Candie’s Foundation is issuing a call to action aimed at getting 100,000 teens to download “Crying Baby” on May 5th.

B-ROLL: Town Hall highlights and panel interviews, red carpet and gala event footage; celebrity and host soundbites, musical performances, soundbites with Neil Cole (Founder, Candie’s Foundation) and “Baby Talk Back” PSA and iPhone demo videos.

Downloadable photos, video, iPhone app and more will be available on May 6th starting at 1pm ET at: http://www.magicbulletmedia.com/MNR/TheCandiesFoundationMay2010.

How To Survive Your Teen’s Pregnancy: Practical Advice for the Parents of a Pregnant Christian Single

How To Survive Your Teen’s Pregnancy: Practical Advice for the Parents of a Pregnant Christian Single

Pregnancy outside marriage is a common challenge in America today. In fact, the CDC notes that births to single mothers reached a record high in 2005. Many parents face the crisis of having their grandchildren born to a single mom, so you are not alone. However, it is probably little consolation to be told that 342,976 teens (aged 15-19) gave birth in 2005, or that more than one in three of all children born in America are born out of wedlock (36.8% in 2005). 69.5% of the children in the African American community are born to single mothers, as are 63.3% of children in the American Indian or Alaska Native population, and 47.9% of children with Hispanic mothers. The Christian community is not immune to the problem of pregnancy outside marriage. Each year, thousands of church leaders and church-going families suddenly find themselves with a pregnant daughter (whether a teen or older young woman) who is not married. But you never thought it would happen in your own Christian family. Wondering what steps to take first? Where to find emotional support? Nervous about the response of family, friends, or the church? Overwhelmed by the options related to housing, finishing school, medical care, parenting, and adoption? There is help and hope even in the midst of your shock and pain. Be assured that you are not alone in your pain. Others have been where you are. Designed as a step-by-step guide and workbook to help parents of a pregnant teen or college student, How To Survive Your Teen’s Pregnancy will help you through the shock, disappointment, and anger, and show you how to redeem beauty from the ashes of this crisis. When we wrote the manuscript for the first edition in 2002, there were very few reports and studies that had yet been published based on the 2000 Census data. We felt bad referencing so many sources that were published in the late 80s and throughout the 1990s because they were very dated by the time the first edition went to the printer. We are very proud to have updated all the statistics throughout the second edition! In every case (but one) we were able to find a source reference from this millenium, and this make the second edition very fresh and timely. We’ve also added new material throughout the book, especially a chapter about the importance of a father. We expanded the information about the grief cycle, and added some new illustrations. We love hearing from you, dear reader, and we thank you in advance for the comments and personal stories that you’ll send us regarding this new edition. Written in a devotional workbook format, each chapter of this 192-page book lovingly addresses an issue to discuss, a decision to examine, or an action to take. Read a related portion of Scripture, identify with a real-life story from those who have survived their teen’s pregnancy, and work through journaling exercises and practical action steps. Appendices list resource books and agencies. You’ll want to keep a spare copy on hand to give to your friend when they call to share the grief that their single daughter is pregnant.
