Teens Tackle Pregnancy, H.I.V.; Promote Abstinence in No Way To Treat a Lady at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts

Category : Teen Pregnancy

LA MIRADA, CA (PRWEB) February 9, 2006

An emotional performance aimed at teens and their parents will take place at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts on February 23rd at 10:00am and 7:00pm as part of Phantom Projects Educational Theatre Group’s “Theatre for Teens” series. No Way to Treat a Lady, a play about teen pregnancy, A.I.D.S., and the physical and emotional consequences of teen promiscuity will be the second production of the 05-06 Season.

California ranks first in the United States for pregnancies among adolescents. The current annual cost to taxpayers in California for births to teen mothers is estimated at $ 1.5 billion and total costs to society run $ 3.3 billion. With no new strategies to educate teens about pregnancy, the California Department of Finance (CDF) conservatively projects a 23% increase in annual teen births in California within 5 years.

The production, which was inspired by 35 years of true stories told by students of veteran Language Arts teacher Bruce Gevirtzman, mixes humor and harsh drama to bring the message home. The event drives a unique approach in that it features real teens portraying the characters of pregnant teens, young parents, and other situations common on high school and middle school campuses across the U.S.

The cast ranging in ages 14-21 will also make themselves available in the lobby of the theatre after the show to continue the discussion, hoping to make a difference in the lives of their peers. Theatre is a powerful tool, and this is one that all teens and parents could certainly work with.

The 10:00AM performance will play host to hundreds of teens bussed in with their schools while the 7:00PM performance will be open to the general public.

No Way to Treat a Lady written by Bruce Gevirtzman, directed by Steve Cisneros will be presented by Phantom Projects Educational Theatre Group. Performances are at 10:00am (school field trip) and 7:00pm (general public). Ticket prices: 10:00am: $ 5.00; 7:00pm: Regular: $ 15.00; High School Students: $ 12.00; Middle School Students $ 5.00.

For tickets call the La Mirada Theatre Box Office at (562) 944 9801 or (714) 994 6310.
