Termite Understanding

Category : Teen Health

If you are a homeowner, you own any type of man-made structure, or you are a farmer, having an understanding of the common termite is essential. The common termite can cause unbelievable damage to both structures made of wood as well as plant material since their main food sources are dead plant material. That includes wood, leaves, fruits, vegetables, and basically anything that has gone “past its prime” and is fodder for their teensy tiny stomachs.

When you have an understanding as to how the termite feeds and where they are most commonly found, you will be better able to control them and minimize the damage that they are able to cause. You see, understanding a termite will help arm you with information that can help you know better how to combat these pests and get them away from that which you hold dear whether it be your home, your business, or your fields.

If you are trying to get an understanding of the termite, you should realize that termites live in colonies much like ants. These colonies are ruled by queens and they have a specific hierarchy of jobs that each termite does. As far as who determines which termites do which jobs is a mystery to us humans, but they do each have a certain job that they are expected to do within the colony.

The queen termite rules the colony and lets all of the other termites what they need to do to keep their society functioning. To have a complete understanding of the termite society, you should also know that there is a king within the colony as well. This is totally unlike the ant colonies as they are ruled simply by a queen. Within the termite colony, the understanding is similar to that of us humans – their decisions rule.

After the king and queen, in the termite colony, you will have workers. These termites are responsible for foraging for food, bringing it back to where the nest is, and storing the food so that the rest of the colony members can use it for nourishment later. The termite colony also has soldiers who are responsible for defending the colony against predators. Even though many people consider termites pests – which they are – they are still living creatures dedicated to surviving no matter how devastating they can be to humans and their structures and crops. The soldiers will do what they have to do in order to make sure that the colony survives.

In getting an understanding of the termite, you will need to get all kinds of information so that you know how to combat them. Remember that there are soldier termites out there, and they will do what they have to in order to make sure that the colony survives. However, when you have a better understanding of how the termite colony works, you will have more tools to keep them from devastating your home and your life.

Basic Poker Rules – Poker Hand Ranking

Category : Teen Health

For those that do not know the basics, here are the ways the hands and cards are ranked in poker.

Number of cards in the deck: 52.

Number of suits: 4 (Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, Clubs)

Number of cards in each suit: 13 (In order of rank; Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2)

Number of cards in a poker hand: 5 (even in games where you are dealt more than 5 cards, only 5 cards count as your poker hand.)

Rank of poker hands from highest to lowest:

1. Royal Flush; (ace, king, queen, jack, ten, all the same suit.)

2. Straight Flush; (5 cards in sequence of the same suit. see “straight” below for explanation of in sequence) (The lowest ranking straight flush is the wheel-flush, ace, 2, 3, 4, 5. 5 is considered the top card, not the ace.) (if two players have a straight flush, the one with the higher top card wins.)

3. Four of a kind; 4 Kings, Queens or other cards. (Of course the higher ranked 4 of a kind wins, such as 4 kings beats 4 queens)

4. Full House; This consists of 3 of a kind, (see below) and a pair all in one hand. (example; you have 3 fours and 2 kings. That would be fours over kings, while having 3 kings and 2 fours would be kings over fours.) (If 2 players each have a full house, the better three-of-a-kind part of the hand wins. example; you have 3 eights and two aces, your opponent has 3 nines and 2 twos. Your opponent wins. Their nines beat your eights.)

5. Flush; 5 cards of any rank, but all the same suit. (If 2 players each have a flush, the flush with the highest top card wins, if that is a tie, then whoever has the highest second card wins, if that is a tie, you compare the third, fourth, fifth card, etc.)

6. Straight; 5 cards in sequence. (example; 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 is a 7-high straight. If you opponent has 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, they have an 8-high straight and they win.)

7. Three of a Kind; (Trips) 3 cards of the same rank. (example; 3 sevens, 3 eights, 3 kings. if 2 players have 3-of-a-kind, the highest ranking cards wins the hand)

8. Two Pairs; A Pair is 2 cards of the same rank. 2 pair means you have 2 sets of 2 cards of the same rank. (If 2 players each have 2 pair, the player with the highest top pair wins. Kings and twos would beat queens and jacks.)

9. Pair; 2 cards of equal rank. (If 2 players each have a pair, the highest ranking pair wins. If 2 players each have the exact same pair, then out of the 3 remaining cards in your hand the highest card is your “kicker”. The highest kicker wins. If still tied, you go to the next highest kicker, etc.)

10. High Card; Where no one has a pair or above, you compare hands like this. The highest card in your hand vs the highest card in opponents hands. If that is a tie, then you compare the next highest card, then the next if still tied and so on. (King, Queen, 10, 6, 2, would beat King, Queen, 10, 5, 4. It would have been a tie until the fourth card compared and the first hand has a 6 to their opponent’s 5.)

Close Up Tricks – King And Queens

Category : Teen Health

This marvelous close up trick starts with an ordinary pack of playing cards, which you pass to a member of the audience. Ask them to look through the pack, remove the four kings, the four queens and lay them on the table face upward.

Once this has been done, arrange the cards in four pairs, king of clubs with queen of clubs etc and so on. Then put these four pairs on top of each other to form a packet of 8 cards which is left face down on the table.

At this stage, ask several people to cut the cards (but not to shuffle them) to give the impression that the cards are mixed.

And now for the main part of the performance. State that your touch is so finely tuned that you can separate the kings and queens just by feeling them. At which point you put the 8 cards behind your back and moments later displays the four kings in one hand and four queens in the other.

Now it’s time to up the ante. So you make the bold claim that you can reunite the four pairs of cards, again using nothing more than your finely tuned sense of touch.

Pick up the four queens, place them on top of the four kings and leave the cards face down on the table.

Again get a number of people to cut (but not shuffle) the cards until it appears that they are well mixed. Finally pick up the cards and put them behind your back. Seconds later you start to produce the cards from behind your back two at a time and lay them face down on the table. When they are turned over, they reveal that all four pairs have been correctly matched.

The Secret

Part One: When you put the cards behind your back for the first time, take every second card with one hand and the rest with the other. Or, to put it another way, one hand should take cards 1, 3, 5 and 7, while the other hand takes cards 2, 4, 6 and 8. Due to the way that the cards were ordered before you picked them up, this will always separate the kings and queens.

Part Two: When you put the cards face down for the audience to cut before you put the cards behind your back for the second time, the audience should think that you arrange them in a face down pile at random. But as with most things in magic, nothing is left to chance.

Make sure that both the queens and the kings are in the same suit order. For example spades, hearts, clubs, diamonds. This is a good choice because it goes black, red, black, red, so once you’ve picked up the first two queens, the next two will be even easier to put in order. Then collect the kings in the same order; spades, hearts, clubs, diamonds. A code way to remember this is the saying SHow CoDe, which has the initials of the suits in the correct order.

Make sure you collect the cards together as nonchalantly as possible. Make it look as though you’re tidying up the cards from the way they were left at the end of the first part of the trick. Once you’ve done that, turn the 8 cards face down and get the audience to cut it several times.

And finally, when you have them behind your back, take the top four cards in one hand and the other four cards in your other hand. Then produce the cards in pairs taking the top card from each hand, until all four pairs are on the table. All that’s left is for you to ask a member of the audience to reveal each of the matching pairs in turn.

The History of Chess

Category : Teen Health

Just how much do you know about chess? Did you know that it is one of the oldest games in world? Do you know where it came from? No one really knows for sure where chess originated. It was played centuries ago in China, India and Persia. In the eighth century, the Moors invaded Persia and learned chess from the Persians. From the Moors, it can be traced to Spain and from Spain to all of Europe.

The Europeans are the ones that named the pieces as we know them now. At the time, it represented the way in which ordinary and persons of rank lived. The pawns on the chess board represent serfs, of which there is more than any other piece on the chess board. In medieval times serfs could be traded, used as a diversion, or sacrificed to keep the landowner from harm.

Each game has four castles, which would have represented home in the medieval times. It was a place that the knights, kings and queens could depend on in times of trouble or war.

A knight’s job was to protect the queen, king and bishop. In a game, as then, the knights can be sacrificed for the protection of the hierarchy. There are two knights per side in a game of chess.

There are two bishops on each side in a game, which represents the history of religion. The bishop was the main priest in the Catholic Church in medieval times, a man with a great deal of power who had risen through the ranks to gain that power.

Have you ever noticed that the queen is the only female in the game? How about the fact that she is the most powerful piece in the whole game? The king would was often guided by the queen’s advise, and history is full of stories of queens against (and for) their kings.

The king is the tallest of the pieces on the board. If the king fell in medieval times, it meant the fall of his kingdom and possibly doom for those in his kingdom. The king is the most important, but not the most powerful, piece in chess. You loose the king, you loose the game.

The next time you play it, invite your children to play with you and turn it into a wonderful and memorable history lesson.

Recognizing Drama Kings And Queens In Your Life

Category : Teen Health

We all have drama kings and queens in our lives. You know who they are! These are the people that enjoy creating drama or chaos. They thrive on stirring up conflict, adding fuel to the fire. They are in our families, they are in our friendships and they are in our workplaces. These are people that seek excitement and attention by playing the lead role in drama or what I like to call ‘me-ism.’ Have you ever noticed how the drama king or queen is always the focal point, playing the victim? You did this to ME! This happened to ME! It is YOUR fault! Poor ME! You have seen this before. We all have. The man in the restaurant who doesn’t get the right order and proceeds to get so loud that the entire restaurant notices, or the lady at the check out counter who is impatient and rude to the clerk because he is a new employee learning to run the cash register and is having a slow day, or the lovely mother-in-law that blows everything out of proportion so that she has some adventure in her life. The list of drama tactics is literally endless! The good news is, we all have choice. We do not have to play their games, to be sucked into their drama, their ‘me-isms.’

After you have been working so hard to lessen the drama in your life by creating peacefulness and calm, drama is very noticeable. It actually becomes very uncomfortable to be in the same space with dramatic people. You have to make a choice on whether you want to participate in the drama that is being created or be the silent observer. Being the silent observer means simply that. Observe without attaching any emotion to the situation. This is very difficult especially if it is coming from family members or loved ones. It is even more difficult when you are the object of the drama! Remember the one creating the drama is really projecting “it is all about ME.” In order not to be involved in their drama, one must consciously remember to not add fuel to their fire. Let them talk, rant, rave, blame or whatever they are projecting onto you, as ‘their’ silent observer. Remember this is THEIR stage, this is their play. They will try their best to suck you in by blaming you, it’s YOUR fault etc. Stand tall, holding your ground and listen. Just listen. No words. Listen. They will bait you by saying something about you, it will feel like a personal attack. That is what they are looking for, for you to play their game, for you to jump onto their stage and attack back! When you listen without adding any comments, what you are really doing is putting water on their fire. You see if you don’t add the fuel, there is no longer a fire! They have nothing to create drama with because there are no players! Drama kings and queens need players. They need fellow actors and actresses in order to play their lead role. By you choosing not to participate, they will have nothing to continue creating drama with. They will in all likelihood stop the drama and move onto another topic. It may however, be gossiping about someone but we can’t expect two miracles in one day! Drama people also create drama by using the poor me pity me routine. Again, this is all ‘me-isms.’ They will draw you into their ‘sad’ stories. They will not likely be attacking you, but they are looking for their fuel. They are looking for their fix. If you again simply listen with compassion as their silent observer, they will not get what they are looking for. One of two things will happen. They will look for someone else for their fix, or you will have empowered them to dig deep into the core of their own being for their own self-empowerment.

The Silent Observer.listens with compassion, changes the energy and brings peacefulness and calm into the situation. Are you a Peace Maker or a Me-ism? It’s only a choice, which do you choose?

Termite Queen

Category : Teen Health

The common termite is also known as a white ant, and like an ant colony, the termite colony is ruled by a queen termite. As can be expected by her title, the termite queen rules the colony and is responsible for its day to day operations. She is also responsible for proliferating the colony by giving birth to thousands of new termites each and every day. As any pregnant woman can tell you, at least it doesn’t take nine months to give birth to a termite baby – that’s way too long! The queen is done with her reproduction responsibilities within a couple of days.

A termite queen isn’t a faithful mate. She will become impregnated by any male who wants to give his seed to her. However, you will often find that there will be one specific male who wants to be the queen’s king. Once her king has taken his “throne,” you will find them together often. Sort of like my daughter with whichever guy she met at the bar last night. But I digress.

The amazing thing about the termite queen is that she is able to lay thousands of eggs every single day. That explains why if you see on termite, you will see hundreds more. It sure doesn’t take long for them to accumulate. When the queen termite is impregnated, she can grow to almost ten times her regular size. As you can imagine, that makes it difficult to get around the colony. That is when the worker termites come into play.

If the termite queen needs to move about, she employs the strength of her worker termites. It takes a lot of the worker termites just to move the termite queen a few inches, but they are actually rewarded in the end. The queen bee secretes a juice from her posterior end which the worker bees then feed on so they can replenish themselves after their massive job.

The queen termite is the only one in the colony with wings, so she can move about easily – of course, assuming she isn’t carrying a load of eggs! Unlike with ant colonies, a termite colony can have several king and queen termites. While that might seem contradictory to some, but actually, the queens and kings are bred to fly away from the colony and establish yet another one. That’s why when you have one termite; you’ve probably got hundreds and even thousands.

The main job of the termite queen is to reproduce other termites so that they can spread and form their own colonies. While that’s not exactly a welcome thought for those of us who fight termites, for the colonies, it is nirvana.

The Queen Bee

Category : Teen Health

The survival of a colony of bees living in a bee hive depends on the queen bee. Without a queen bee the hive will eventually die. The hives queen is the only female bee in the hive that has fully developed reproductive organs. The queen is not in control of the hive. Her soul purpose is to lay eggs that will develop into bees that will fill other roles in the hive.

The queen bee is determined when the bee is still in its larval stage. The larval that has been set aside as potential queens are fed extra royal jelly. Royal jelly is a secretion that the worker bees store in their heads. Larvae that the hive feels will make potential queens are also kept in Queen cells. Queen cells differ from cells used in the rest of the hive because they are larger and are designed vertically instead of vertically, the queen hangs, head down, during her development.

Potential queen larvae must be determined within four days of the time the larvae is laid.

When it is time for the queen to leave her cell, she chews through the cap. As she chews she emits a sound that is believed to warn other hatching queens of her arrival. Music aficionados will recognize the sound as a G sharp. It is not unusual to find that after the first queen bee has hatched that the rest of the queen cells have a slit in them where the young queen has chewed through, effectively killing the developing larvae inside the cells. Beekeepers call the destroyed larvae, virgin queens. Worker bees will try to keep several young queens alive at a time in order to have a backup Queen available if the first queen is unable to find a mate or does not survive her nuptial flight.

When the new queen is old enough to fly she leaves the hive. While she is away from the hive she must find several drone bees from a different hive to mate with. It is important that the queen mate with at least twelve drones during this nuptial flight. The sperm that she collects during this flight will be the sperm that she uses for the rest of her life. If the queen is unable to make the nuptial flight the survival of the rest of the hive is in peril. Most hives try to keep several virgin queens alive to help prevent that from happening.

Most hives allow the old queen to continue to lay eggs, however when it is time for the rest of the hive to swarm, she leaves the hive.

Once they have mated with a queen the drone bees die.

It is normally easy to see which bee is the queen bee when she is surrounded by other bees. She has a abdomen that is considerably longer then her fellow hive mates. To make identifying the queen faster many beekeepers mark their queen with a tiny bit of paint. The average life span of the queen bee is two to three years.
