South Florida Car Accident Lawyer Says Drug-Impaired Motorists Threaten Traffic Safety Progress

Stuart, FL (PRWEB) March 01, 2012

New data shows that teen drivers fail to appreciate the danger of driving while under the influence of illegal drugs such as marijuana, South Florida car accident lawyer Philip DeBerard, III, said today.

DeBerard pointed to a recent survey by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). More teens in the survey said they had driven under the influence of marijuana than alcohol.

Hard-won safety gains from curbing drunk driving could unravel if young motorists continue to ignore the danger of driving after smoking marijuana or using other illegal drugs, DeBerard said.

“The most frightening thing is that so many young drivers don’t think that marijuana will affect their driving,” DeBerard said. “They are wrong. They could be putting themselves and others at risk for a serious auto accident.”

DeBerard’s South Florida personal injury firm represents people injured in car accidents caused by drunk drivers and drug-impaired drivers in Stuart and along the Treasure Coast.

The U.S. has made significant progress on the issue of drunk driving in the past few decades, DeBerard said. He pointed to recently released stats from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA shows that DUI deaths fell 5 percent in 2010 to 10,228. That marks a roughly 50 percent decrease from 30 years ago.

However, the progress on drunk driving faces a serious threat from the use of marijuana and other drugs, DeBerard said.

Teenagers, in particular, display an increasing acceptance of marijuana, the Liberty Mutual/SADD figures show. Roughly one-in-five teenagers in the survey said they had driven under the influence of marijuana. Only 13 percent said they had driven after drinking alcohol.

The survey also revealed that 36 percent of teens who say they have driven after smoking marijuana believe the drug has no negative impact on their driving abilities. That’s compared to only 19 percent of teenagers who said they had driven after drinking and believed that alcohol had no effect on their driving.

“It is clear from these results that the youngest drivers on our highways don’t appreciate the tragedies that drugged driving can cause, including life-changing or even life-ending auto accidents,” DeBerard said. “We can’t stand by as drug-impaired drivers erase all of the gains we have made by reducing drunk driving.”

DeBerard cited a recent study published in the British Medical Journal. The study found that people who smoked marijuana within three hours before driving were nearly twice as likely to have a crash.

Another study in Epidemiologic Reviews found that 30 percent of drivers killed in wrecks had drugs other than alcohol in their system. Marijuana was the most common drug.

“Florida and the rest of the country need to get serious about marijuana-impaired driving,” DeBerard said. “We need to make sure we have the laws and resources to make the public aware of the dangers of drugged driving. We need to punish those who ignore the risks.”

Florida law already outlaws driving under the influence of “any chemical substance” or “any controlled substance” that impairs a person’s normal faculties. Driving under the influence of marijuana can fit that definition, DeBerard said.

He encouraged anyone who has been injured by an impaired driver to talk with a qualified Florida accident lawyer. An impaired driving crash lawsuit can allow victims or victims’ families to recover compensation for injuries, lost wages, pain and suffering and more, DeBerard said.

Miss South Carolina Bree Boyce Talks to fitsmi.com(TM) Radio about Her Journey from Being an Obese Teen to Becoming a Beauty Queen

(PRWEB) November 04, 2011

Bree Boyce shares her story on a fitsmi.com Radio special podcast about her incredible journey from being a 230 lb. teen girl to winning the title of Miss South Carolina. The beauty queen speaks candidly about what motivated her to stop yo-yo dieting and start losing the weight and taking control over her health. The original interview aired live on Tuesday, November 1.

Speaking with fitsmi.com Radio host and author of Teenage Waistland, Abby Ellin, Ms. Boyce explained what finally motivated her to lose 110 lbs, “The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I went to the doctor at age 17 and I had knee problems,” explained Ms. Boyce. “ And I had put it off for so long because I knew exactly what he was going to tell me, and I hated going to the doctor’s office because I hated getting weighed.

Finally when I went to the doctor, he looked at me, and said ‘you know, you haven’t had an injury because, let’s be honest, you’re not physically active like most teens, so there’s no injury there. But it is the weight that’s bearing down on your knees that’s causing the pain.’

He told me that it was basically up to me to change this and he actually handed me a handicap sticker [for my car] and said ‘best of luck, I hope that you can do this. You have to do it for yourself. You can’t do it for anyone else.’”

On exercise and going to the gym, Bree confessed, “I started off very slowly, walking around my neighborhood because I was embarrassed to go to the gym in my hometown because it was huge and I knew that everybody would be there, and I was embarrassed to go around other people who were stick thin and in the gym working out.”

Miss South Carolina, now age 22, offered her tips to teens on how she personally made small but sustainable changes that worked for her, but she knows it’s not easy, saying “Because being a teenager, and trying to constantly always watch what you’re eating and get physical activity can be very emotionally draining. And when your friends are naturally thin, they don’t understand the things that you’re going through, especially when you’re trying to keep your grades good, and you’re trying to have your family life, and have your social life, it’s very hard.”

South Africa Community Service Trip 2009 (part 5 of 8) TRAVEL FOR TEENS

Category : Teen

Parts 3 through to 7 are the real heart of this DVD, documenting the meaningful community service project at a village crèche on South Africas Eastern Cape (aka The Wild Coast). Transforming a yard that was overgrown by vegetation and dotted with trash, 5 days of solid work sees a jungle gym and swing set become established assets that will most probably last decades. Our local expert partners provided the blueprints, the resources, the training in safety and equipment usage, and supervised and assisted our work throughout the project. Also included in this footage are some spectacular beach shots taken from our nearby private bungalow-type accommodation (in a backpacker resort), footage from nearby Inkwenkwenzi private game park (including shots of rare white lions), and shots from an evening visit to Mama Tofus village.

Teenagers from Around the U.S. Travel to Marshfield to Help South Shore Community With Hands-on Home Repairs

(PRWEB) February 16, 2005

More than 450 hearty and high spirited teenagers and adult leaders are expected to converge on Marshfield, Mass. this summer, July 24 – 30, as part of the Group Workcamp program. Local sponsors include the First Congregational Church of Marshfield and Taylor Lumber – ACE Hardware.

Economically challenged regions in the Deep South and blighted urban areas in the Northeast are the more common focal destination for Group Workcamp programs, a nationally known effort that encourages teenagers to spend one week of their vacation helping the community with hands-on home repairs. This is the first effort to ever be held in New England.

South Shore residents who need a hand with home repairs ranging from wheelchair ramps to porches to interior/exterior painting to decks to weatherizing and more can apply for the FREE and enthusiastic teenage labor. Applications can be found at the website of the local effort — http://www.plymouthbayworkcamp.com. Or contact Bob Maffeo at 617.816-0228 or Jim McCory at 781-834-7855. Application deadline is March 1.

More than South Shore home renovation 70 projects will be selected. Projects will be chosen based on need. In particular, Group Workcamp is looking to help out economically challenged senior, single parents and the disabled.

“This is a great opportunity for teens to learn about helping to transform homes and lives,” noted Bob Maffeo, Marshfield resident who is helping spearhead the program. “We are looking forward to seeing all participants reap tangible and intangible rewards from this ambitious program.”

Local organizers Bob Maffeo, a member of First Congregational Church of Marshfield and Jim McCorry, a member of St. Christines Church of Marshfield have been canvassing local councils on aging and food pantries to create awareness of the program and to identify those in need.

Teenagers donate $ 399 to participate in the program. This covers their room and board for the week. This group will be staying at MarshfieldÂ’s Furnace Brook Middle School, First Congregational Church of Marshfield, St. ChristineÂ’s Church and North Community Church. In addition to honest, hard work, visitors will enjoy evening activities and touring the region.

The work at each home will be done by a crew of five young people and one adult leader, representing many Christian denominations.

More than $ 7,000 has already been raised to cover the cost of materials and room and board for teenagers chosen for scholarship. The goal is to raise $ 19,000 to $ 26,000. Locally, Taylor Lumber – ACE Hardware will be providing materials “at cost” and American Computer Technologies has donated the design, development and hosting of the comprehensive website that informs the public of the program.

Additional and local volunteers are being sought to host out of state volunteers, deliver materials, share tools, provide building materials, and donate funds. Those with home repair or construction experience are asked to help out with site identification and selection and to perform site evaluations during the camp week.

For more information, please contact http://www.plymouthbayworkcamp.com, email – PlymouthBayworkcamp2005@yahoo.com, Jim McCorry at (781) 834-7855, or write to Plymouth Bay Workcamp, C/O First Congregational Church, 1981 Ocean Street, Marshfield, Mass. 02050.
