Los Angeles, CA (Vocus) September 29, 2010

FashionClub.com, the popular teen website from FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, has a gorgeous new look that is better than ever. And just in time for back to school, it’s the place to go for all the latest fall teen fashions. Every page on the site has been redesigned, including the homepage, which now features a dynamic slideshow highlighting new articles each month on cool fashion trends and amazing beauty tips.

“The design was inspired by elements of Art Nouveau, Japanese Pop Art, and the creativity I see everyday on the FIDM campus,” said FashionClub.com Art Director Harriet Grant. “Our new look is cleaner and more sophisticated with a definite playful edge.” Plus, the new navigation makes content easy to find.

This month, “Fashion & Beauty” is focused on Fall 2010 styles. “Trend Alert” takes readers to the Style Academy to learn how to make the most out of their wardrobe with all the hottest fall accessories and layering trends for back to school shopping. FIDM Graduates share their expert knowledge on Fall 2010 beauty trends in “Beauty Buzz.”

There is an important section full of opportunities to enter contests and apply for scholarships to attend FIDM. This month, to coincide with the re-launch of the site, Fashion Club is promoting their Back to School “Jumpstart Your Dreams Contest” where entrants compete to win fabulous fashion and beauty prizes. With a deadline of October 15, 2010, entrants are asked to write a short essay of 150 words describing their dream job in the design or entertainment industry—whether it’s fashion, interiors, graphics, or visual arts—and submit it along with a collage depicting the job for their chance to win fabulous designer prizes.

“The contest gives high school students the opportunity to explore their dream career paths in a fun and exciting way,” says Fashion Club Promotions Manager Clarissa Ramirez-Hamm. “Even the seven amazing prize packs were created to offer insight into their chosen career.”

And since Fashion Club knows how career-oriented its members are, there is an entire section devoted to the subject. With interviews from successful FIDM Graduates like fashion designer Monique Lhuillier, incredible insight is given to the fashion industry. Industry experts share their fashion career advice on “Ask Career Girl.”

FashionClub.com is now dedicating a special area just to its members. “Your FC” features member submitted original fashion design sketches and photos. Video footage takes you behind the scenes at Fashion Club photo shoots and events. Plus, readers can submit their fashion questions to the style experts on staff.

“Life@FIDM” is the new home of everything related to FIDM Students: their style, their blogs, the events around campus, and interviews with those who just got accepted.

With four dynamic California campuses, FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is the premier west coast fashion design college, educating for careers in fashion, graphic design, interior design, and entertainment. FIDM’s graduates include renowned fashion designers like Kevan Hall and Leanne Marshall, Emmy® and Academy Award® award-winning costume designers, top fashion industry executives, and entrepreneurs.

Narconon Arrowhead Offers Two Free Booklets to Educate Teens on Drug Abuse

Category : Teen Drug Abuse

Canadian, OK (PRWEB) October 16, 2007

When children hit their teens and are not so dependent on parents for companionship or support, it’s easy to breathe a sigh of relief and reduce one’s monitoring. If this reduction is met with changes in behavior that might indicate drug or alcohol abuse, it’s important for a parent to know what to do next.

What changes may indicate drug abuse? Mood swings from grumpy to happy without apparent reason; withdrawal from family members and activities; carelessness about personal grooming; loss of interest in sports, studies or favorite activities, changed sleeping patterns; emotional blowups or abuse; being absent from school or from home for long hours; making excuses for behavior; overreaction to criticism; needing money or having unexplained money. The appearance of these signs does not indicate drug abuse in every teen, but they should raise red flags.

Parents suspecting drug abuse may ask their children outright if they are abusing drugs, be answered with “Of course not, I would never do that,” and then not know how to proceed. Parents want to love and trust their children and not accuse them unfairly. But when these signs continue, a parent must change tactics in three important ways.

1.    Make it harder for the teen to engage in drug-related activities. Restrict use of cell phone or car. Require more attendance at family dinners or outings. Require more reporting on whereabouts and confirm the accuracy of the reports. Provide less cash which may mean you have to accompany the teen on purchasing trips.

2.    Open the channels of communication by letting the teen know that you will accept any communication from them without blame or shame, and then make opportunities for them to talk privately with you. And if they do tell you startling news, you have to keep that promise.

3.    Provide the teen with drug education they can understand, identify with and use.

As well as being dearly loved, children are this country’s most precious resource for the future. They deserve a present and a future free from drug abuse and need to be taught how to avoid this danger that they are all too likely to encounter at a young age.

“We understand that it’s hard for many parents to know where to start,” stated Ryan Thorpe, Director of Admissions at Narconon Arrowhead, one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation and education centers in Canadian, Oklahoma. “To help with this task, Narconon Arrowhead is offering parents and other interested people two free booklets to help educate themselves and their children on the problems associated with drug use: 10 Things Your Friends May Not Know About Drugs and Healing Addicted Lives.”

To obtain these booklets, call 1-800-468-6933 today. For more information on the rehabilitation and educational services of Narconon Arrowhead, call this number today or visit the website www.stopaddiction.com. Publisher of Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul Series Releases Next Generation of Books for Teens Introducing The Jon & Jayne Doe Series – the First Internet-Active Teen Series

Category : Teen Gossip

Deerfield Beach, Florida (PRWEB) January 23, 2008

In the tradition of their bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, which continues to rein as the most popular non-fiction series among teens, HCI Books has launched the first Internet-Active Book Series. Targeting the next generation teen market The Jon & Jayne Doe Series also has the distinction of having its own theme song and video. The first title in the series available in February is Jon & Jayne’s Guide to Making Friends & “Getting” the Guy (or Girl).

What “Internet-Active” means is that the books and its website coexist as one unit — much like the web-based toys for young children. Games such as “the Drama” and “Quickies” offer passwords and keywords that activate certain features to the website. . Curiosity will drive our readers to the website, but these activities are ancillary to the overall message of the books. It is self-help in a package that teens can relate to.

Rather than dwell on the issues that every self-help book for teens takes on such as body image, self-esteem, dealing with parents, and other broad-stroke topics , The Jon and Jayne Doe series addresses the secondary topics — those situations that are affected by these larger issues, like “getting” the guy or the girl, making new friends, being invited to the cool party? These are the issues that really keep teens talking at their lockers (that is, when they’re not trying to crawl inside of one).

To reach teens where they live, and to ensure the authenticity of its content, The Jon & Jayne Doe Series was created with teens who approve the topics, content, lingo, situations. The teen panel (aka “the crew”) are a group of teenagers who took a real interest in the series concept when it was presented to them. They, as well as other kids in the Jon & Jayne network, play a very large role in shaping Jon and Jayne’s characters as well as in shaping the content and packaging of the books. Every word that comes out of Jon and Jayne’s mouth is approved by them.

Topping off the new Internet-Active series, www.jonandjayne.com includes message boards, quizzes, surveys, and contests and a place for kids to post their questions, ideas, stories, and comments. This input which will shape future issues in the series. The video can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xkvaAH6new.

Noted Speaker Releases Third Book for Teens and Parents

Category : Teen Gossip

Scott Fried, Speaker and Author

New York (Vocus) September 28, 2009

Scott Fried knows what it’s like to feel all alone in the world. He went through his teens as an outsider and has lived with the stigma of being HIV positive for more than two decades. For 18 years, Fried has dedicated his life to speaking to teens around the country, listening to their hopes, their dreams and their fears, as well teaching them comprehensive sexual health education.

Fried is releasing his third book Oct. 15, a labor of love that he calls “a communal anonymous voice” for teens to share their deepest thoughts and feelings. “A Private Midnight: A Teenager’s Scrapbook of Secrets” is a journal of sorts, but also much more.

When Fried began speaking to teens at schools, camps and churches, he found that he related to them and that they opened up around him. Thousands of teens have emailed him with their innermost thoughts as he became their trusted advisor and friend.

“The secrets they share are poetic and singular, but also universal,” Fried said.

Fried posted a survey on his website, www.scottfried.com, which allowed them to answer questions anonymously. The 10 insightful questions struck a nerve, and thousands of teens answered:

Who are you?
What are you afraid of?
What does the emptiness inside feel like?
Whose arms do you fall into?
Who do you miss the most?
What is the miracle you are waiting for?
What is your weapon?
When was the last time God spoke to you?
What advice would you give to your parents?
What is your favorite childhood memory?

“A Private Midnight” is a scrapbook of secrets, a collection of poems and possibilities and a journal of dreams. It can help parents and teachers “crack the code” of what it means to be a teen today.

“It will give them a much deeper understanding of the true issues facing their children as well as a platform to begin a healthy conversation,” Fried said. “At the very least, it will offer them ten new and relevant questions to ask their teenage child, instead of the over-used and irrelevant two daily questions, ‘How was your day?’ and ‘What did you do?’”

Fried is the author of two other acclaimed books, “My Invisible Kingdom: Letters from the Secret Lives of Teens” and “If I Grow Up: Talking with Teens about AIDS, Love and Staying Alive.”

Fried is available for media interviews and speaking engagements around the U.S. To contact Fried, visit www.scottfried.com or call 212.465.2646.

Teens are Not Prepared to Work, says Teens4Hire.org; It’s the Impetus for Their New Job Readiness and Certification Program ‘Ready for the Workplace’

Category : Teen

Huntington Beach, Ca. (PRWEB) July 23, 2007

In direct response to comments from companies reluctant to hire teens for summer and part-time jobs, Teens4Hire.org launches Ready for the Workplace™, an online job readiness and certification program for teens aged 14-19. The program is designed to improve the employability and success of teens in the workplace.

“Companies complain to us that teens are not prepared, ready or even truly willing to work,” says Renee Ward, founder of Teens4Hire.org, a web site devoted to helping teens land jobs. “They say teens lack the right attitude, skills and work ethic which makes the company reluctant to hire a teenager especially a minor teen.”

To compete, Ward says parents and job counselors should invest and encourage their teens to sign up for Teens4Hire.org’s online job readiness and certification program, Ready for the Workplace™ http://www.teens4hire.org/ready_workplace.asp.

“Teens that want to work need a way to prove or certify that they are willing, prepared and ready to work, to maximize their employability,” says Ward. “They need to overcome the reluctance of companies and take down one of the barriers to their employment. Workplace expectations, basics and the fundamentals of the working world can be taught. Coupled with self motivation and a positive attitude is a win-win all around. Now when someone asks the question, ‘Who helps teens get ready for the workplace?’ We can say we do.”

Ready for the Workplace™ comes at a time when fewer than half the nation’s nearly 17 million teens ages 16-19 — or 48.8 percent — had or were looking for jobs in June, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, compared to 67.7 percent in 1978, the highest recorded rate of teens working or looking for jobs.

This is even more significant because for the first time since 1948, when the federal government began tracking data, the number of teens who aren’t working or looking for work in the summer has outpaced those with paying jobs.

Ward says contrary to the reports that say teens have stopped wanting or looking for work, millions of teens join her site each year in hopes of landing a job of interest but there aren’t enough companies actively advertising their openings to teens.

Employers have other options these days she says. They’d prefer to hire older workers for their experience and work ethic.

She says that’s why teen employment numbers are dwindling.

Teens4Hire.org surveys show that 80 percent of teens want a paying job in an area of interest to them and say they need the money for necessities.

When teens get the message that fewer jobs are available or think they won’t find one or that no one will hire them, they’re less likely to try to get a job, drop out of the labor pool and seek other venues.

Ready for the Workplace™ is a self paced, self development program that covers issues of real importance to employers. It is provided as a collaboration of Teens4Hire.org and The Pikes Peak Learning Company of Colorado Springs, CO.

Upon completion of the program teens receive a Certificate of Completion that they can present to prospective employers as testimony to their self-motivation, preparedness and readiness for work.

Employers are provided with a detailed program description of what has been learned and accomplished. This program is also a true benefit for the employer that has openings but not the resources to train teens in the basics of workplace essentials.

Tens of thousands of teens nationwide have used learning systems such as this to enhance their lives. Ready for the Workplace™ is accessible to any teen with a connection to the Internet.

HCG Diet Direct Recommends Parents of Obese Teens Consider Homeopathic Weight Loss

Category : Teen Problems

HCG Diet Direct

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus) March 15, 2010

HCG Diet Direct recommends parents of obese and overweight teens consider the advantages offered by homeopathic weight loss methods. The drastic weight loss provided by homeopathic HCG diet programs can reduce the risk for common illnesses and diseases as well as decrease the potential for problems with self esteem, general confidence and depression.

Health problems that frequently afflict obese and/or overweight teens include:

Blount’s Disease: this bone deformity of the lower legs is a result of excess weight on growing bones.
Arthritis: Teens can sometimes find themselves suffering from arthritis at an early age (the painful joint problem is caused by wear and tear on the joints from carrying extra weight).
Asthma: Experts have found a connection between the existence and the severity of asthma and unhealthy weight levels.
Slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE): This painful hip problem is occurs more frequently in overweight/obese teens. It requires immediate attention and surgery to avoid further injury.
Sleep apnea: This condition is defined by an individual temporarily ceasing to breathe while sleeping. It’s a serious problem for many overweight/obese teens. It leaves individuals suffering from a lack of sleep resulting in a lack of concentration/ability to learn. It can also lead to heart problems.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (POS): Overweight teen girls may have irregular periods (or miss periods entirely). They may also have elevated levels of testosterone in their blood. Too much testosterone can interfere with ovulation, cause excess hair growth, exacerbate acne, and increase the chance of male-type baldness.
Pseudotumor Cerebri: This is a rare cause of severe headaches in overweight/obese teens and adults. The condition is caused by pressure build up in the brain. Other symptoms can include: vomiting, unsteady walking and vision problems (these could become permanent if the problem is not treated).

Other common problems that are found in high percentages among overweight and/or obese teens include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver, gallstones, insulin resistance and diabetes, and depression.

Jenny Boynton of HCG Diet Direct responded, “We’re seeing more parents coming to the homeopathic HCG diet program with their teens. They’re doing the diet together. Parents are recognizing that their role in the lives of their teens includes health and wellness. It’s crucial to get a grip before the problem is taken into adulthood. Bad habits only become harder to break the longer they continue.”

HCG Diet Direct offers homeopathic weight loss products as well as industry specific information on losing weight, cooking healthy and maintaining weight after successful dieting programs. ABC News 20/20 Extreme Sports and Teens

ABC News 20/20 Extreme Sports and Teens

Extreme speed bike riding, skateboarding off the back of a car, jumping from building to building… for some teenagers, risk-taking is a cure for boredom. But sometimes this not-so-innocent fun is injuring and even killing teens in search of the elusive buzz. “I do it for the rush. There’s no other feeling like it,” says teenage BMX rider Kalin Law. But what causes this addiction to risky business, and why are some teens more out of control? ABC News talks to experts and doctors about the teenage brain. As ABC News reports, there are some kids just plain born to take dangerous risks. “Thrill seekers are low in arousal in the nervous system. And they want to get their arousal up, so they seek stimulation… They love intense experience,” says Dr. Frank Farley of Temple University, who has studied such behavior for more than 30 years and calls such thrill seekers T-types. He tells ABC News what parents should look for in kids as young as two, so that they can channel them properly. “We wouldn’t have created the modern world without our T-types. Because they’re the creative, innovative, entrepreneurial, inventive people… The object is to engage them, it’s to provide stimulation to compete with the top of the car phenomenon.” This “20/20″ program also contains the following stories: Sambucks Pheromones Anchors: Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel Correspondent: Jim Avila Airdate: 12/9/2005
