Texas Tennis Open Announces Early Player Commitments

Grapevine, TX (PRWEB) June 27, 2011

The 2011 Texas Tennis Open, which will feature many of today’s top WTA professional tennis stars – six of which are seeded at this year’s prestigious Wimbledon- including Julia Goerges of Germany, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, Shuai Peng of China, Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, announced today its player field continues to grow.

The inaugural event, which is part of the WTA Tour, is considered an ‘International Level’ tournament with prize money of $ 220,000, and features a singles draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16 teams. The tournament, which will play host to an international field of players, will take place August 20 through August 27, 2011 at the Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel in Grapevine, Texas.

“The current list of players committed to this event makes it the strongest women’s field we’ve seen at a professional-level event in Texas since the mid-1980’s,” said Ken McAllister, United States Tennis Association (USTA) Texas Executive Director. “The fact that many of these top players are currently playing, or seeded, at Wimbledon provides a great opportunity for spectators at the Texas Tennis Open to see incredible professional tennis right here in North Texas,” McAllister added.

A partial list of players (and WTA ranking) committed to the tournament includes: Julia Goerges (16), Yanina Wickmayer (19), Shuai Peng (20), Dominika Cibulkova (24), Jarmila Gajdosova (28), Bethanie Mattek-Sands (31), Gisela Dulko (40), Sabine Lisicki (62), Sorana Cirstea (86), Melanie Oudin (87).

“We are very pleased with the current players who have committed to our event,“ said Chris Giordano, Texas Tennis Open Tournament Director. “Our goal from the very beginning was to build a tournament that will attract the greatest players in the game to North Texas for the fans, and I believe we are meeting our objectives in our first year,” he added.

Houston Bicycle Accident Attorney: Texas Drivers Must Safely Share The Road With Cyclists

Houston Bicycle Accident Attorney: Texas Drivers Must Safely Share The Road With Cyclists

Houston personal injury attorney Brad T. Wyly

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) November 16, 2011

A string of fatal bicycle accidents in the Houston area in recent weeks should serve as a reminder to both cyclists and drivers about the need to behave responsibly on the roads, Houston bicycle accident lawyer Brad T. Wyly said today.

The first two days of November were deadly for cyclists, according to reports from the Houston Chronicle and KHOU Channel 11. A 58-year-old Harris County man was riding a bike when he was struck from behind on a dark road on November 1, and a teenage cyclist was killed in a separate crash on November 2.

“These two bicycle accidents are tragedies, and sadly, they join dozens of others that occur in Texas every year,” said Wyly, whose Houston personal injury law firm represents clients who have been injured in bicycle accidents in Houston, Galveston, Beaumont and Harris County. “Sadly too many cyclists are killed or severally injured on our roadways because drivers do not exercise proper caution while behind the wheel.”

Forty-two Texas cyclists were killed in bicycle crashes in 2010, statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation show. That’s a 13 percent decrease from 2009, when Texas had the third highest number of bicycle-car accident fatalities in the country, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Overall, 630 cyclists died and 51,000 were injured in crashes across the U.S. in 2009, NHTSA reports.

“People do not always realize that cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as every other driver on the roads,” Wyly said.

“Drivers should view cyclists with the same respect as any other motorist or pedestrian,” the Houston personal injury lawyer said. “The problem is that some drivers see cyclists as nuisances instead of neighbors on the roads, and that’s when accidents can happen.”

Aggressive driving is hardly the only cause of deadly accidents. Bicycle-car collisions often happen when a car is pulling out of an alley, parking lot or driveway and fails to see a cyclist. Other causes include distracted driving, speeding, and opening front doors without checking for oncoming cyclists.

“Cyclists are generally more likely to sustain life-threatening injuries in crashes with cars, trucks and other objects,” Wyly said.

“That’s because they have nothing protecting them from direct impact with a vehicle or the pavement when a collision occurs,” he explained.

Head injuries are the most common type of injury associated with bicycle accidents, and 91 percent of bicyclists killed in 2009 were not wearing helmets, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Texas does not currently have a law requiring bicyclists to wear helmets. But helmets are a form of self-protection that every cyclist should invest in, according to Wyly.

When a wreck occurs, injured cyclists and their families may have grounds to file a lawsuit if another driver’s reckless or careless actions caused the wreck.

“An experienced bike accident attorney can investigate who is at fault and advise victims of their legal options,” Wyly said. “A successful negligence claim can provide much-needed compensation for families who are struggling to pay astronomical medical bills after a devastating crash.”

But being safe is not only the responsibility of automobile drivers, Wyly cautioned.

“Just as drivers are responsible for driving safely on the roads, so are cyclists,” the Houston accident attorney said. “Liability applies both ways, so it is crucial for every traveler to exercise care when they hit the roads.”

Texas Attorney Asks Parents To Remind Their Children About The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Texas Attorney Asks Parents To Remind Their Children About The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Jack Zinda

Austin, TX (PRWEB) October 22, 2010

Parents of teen drivers should take the time this week to talk to their children about the risks of using electronic devices while driving, Texas personal injury lawyer Jack Zinda says.

As part of its ongoing Teen Safe Driving campaign, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has designated the week of October 17-24 National Teen Driver Safety Week.

“So many needless deaths and injuries are caused in the state of Texas and across the country by teen drivers who are distracted by an electronic device while behind the wheel,” says Zinda, a founding partner of the law firm of Heselmeyer Zinda, PLLC, which represents car accident victims from its offices in Plano, Austin and Round Rock.

“This week is the perfect time to sit down with your teen driver and remind them to always focus on driving instead of playing with a radio, talking on a cell phone or trying to send or read a text message,” Zinda says. “When you’re distracted by an electronic device, you put yourself at serious risk of injury or death, and you endanger the health and safety of others on the road.”

Statistics show there is a significant problem with distracted teen drivers, Zinda says. He points to an NHTSA report indicating that 11 percent of the people who died in distracted driving crashes nationwide in 2008 were teens ages 15 through 19 years old.

In 2008, out of the 795 people who died in crashes that involved a distracted teen driver, 659 were teenagers, the NHTSA reports.

Zinda says he is particularly alarmed by the results of a Pew Research Center Internet & American Life Project study in which nearly half of the teens interviewed said they had been in a vehicle while a driver texted. One in three teens admitted to Pew researchers that they had texted while driving.

“As a personal injury attorney, I’ve worked with victims who were severely injured or families that lost a loved one due to the negligence of another driver,” Zinda says. “I think if more teen drivers were made aware of those tragic consequences of distracted driving, fewer teen drivers would try to send a text message or use any other electronic device when they are behind the wheel.”
