Escaping the Endless Adolescence: How We Can Help Our Teenagers Grow Up Before They Grow Old

Do you sometimes wonder how your teen is ever going to survive on his or her own as an adult? Does your high school junior seem oblivious to the challenges that lie ahead? Does your academically successful nineteen-year-old still expect you to “just take care of” even the most basic life tasks?

Welcome to the stunted world of the Endless Adolescence. Recent studies show that today’s teenagers are more anxious and stressed and less independent and motivated to grow up than ever before. Twenty-five is rapidly becoming the new fifteen for a generation suffering from a debilitating “failure to launch.” Now two preeminent clinical psychologists tell us why and chart a groundbreaking escape route for teens and parents.

Drawing on their extensive research and practice, Joseph Allen and Claudia Worrell Allen show that most teen problems are not hardwired into teens’ brains and hormones but grow instead out of a “Nurture Paradox” in which our efforts to support our teens by shielding them from the growth-spurring rigors and rewards of the adult world have backfired badly. With compelling examples and practical and profound suggestions, the authors outline a novel approach for producing dramatic leaps forward in teen maturity, including

• Turn Consumers into Contributors Help teens experience adult maturity–its bumps and its joys–through the right kind of employment or volunteer activity.
• Feed Them with Feedback Let teens see and hear how the larger world perceives them. Shielding them from criticism–constructive or otherwise–will only leave them unequipped to deal with it when they get to the “real world.”
• Provide Adult Connections Even though they’ll deny it, teens desperately need to interact with adults (including parents) on a more mature level–and such interaction will help them blossom!
• Stretch the Teen Envelope Do fewer things for teens that they can do for themselves, and give them tasks just beyond their current level of competence and comfort.

Today’s teens are starved for the lost fundamentals they need to really grow: adult connections and the adult rewards of autonomy, competence, and mastery. Restoring these will help them unlearn their adolescent helplessness and grow into adults who can make you–and themselves–proud.

Giving Teachers What They Deserve

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 29, 2008

As the wind down to the end of term begins, teenagers everywhere are already planning their summer holiday – a long escape from the drudgery of textbooks, homework and revision. However, before the final bell rings, the same teenagers are being urged to consider their year, what they’ve achieved and what they can achieve as a consequence of it. More specifically, and related to Teacher Appreciation Day 2008, they are being urged to consider what it is which facilitates their achievements — namely, the teachers.

Be it a science teacher or a sports teacher, in-school or extra curricular teaching, for an enjoyable subject or a challenging one, teachers throughout the country are working hard to ensure their pupils are reaching their potential, often exceeding the usual demands of the job to ensure said potential is met. For this, most certainly a reward is in order.

Teacher Appreciation Day 2008 takes place on May 6th and is a chance for pupils to unite in their gratitude, demonstrating to their teacher that they recognise how he/she is responsible for such an important phase in their life, a phase which will have an impact on their entire future.

With each year that passes, Teacher Appreciation Day is establishing itself as an increasingly significant point in the schooling calendar. Not only does the teacher benefit by being on the receiving end of a gesture of thanks (encouragement can never be a negative thing!) but should the class work together, they too will benefit from practising co-operational skills; it is no wonder head-teachers are drawing special attention to the event.

A typical gift for Teacher Appreciation Day would be a box of chocolates, a bunch of flowers or a simple note of thanks. What are encouraged on this day however are gifts of personality that effectively demonstrate that as much thought has gone into the gesture as consideration the teacher has had for his/her class. Thanks to specialised websites and gift stores, inspiration for teacher appreciation gifts of this type is not far away. With a little motivation and co-operation from fellow class mates, you’ll have no problem making your teacher’s day on Teacher Appreciation Week 2008.

Teacher-appreciation.info is an established website which provides visitors with ideas, stories, articles and news relating to teacher appreciation. Regularly updated and with an extensive variety of information, it can be considered as a one-stop shop for planning this special May week.

The whooping cough vaccine doesn’t work so what are they injecting???

Category : Teen

Reports of whooping cough outbreaks in California and in other states this summer are nothing new. Every four to five years — no matter how high the vaccination rate is – there are reports of whooping cough increases. Whooping cough is a respiratory disease. Toxins in Bordetella pertussis bacteria stimulate the production of large amounts of thick, sticky mucus that can clog the airways of tiny babies and children, making it difficult for them to take a breath without vomiting, choking and making a whooping sound as they struggle to breathe. There is an acellular pertussis vaccine — DTaP – which was licensed for American babies in 1996.4 DTaP replaced an older, very reactive whole cell pertussis vaccine – DPT – that was associated with more cases of high fever, collapse/shock, convulsions, brain inflammation and permanent brain damage. It is well known that pertussis vaccines, which can contain various amounts of bioactive toxins and also aluminum and mercury additives, have killed and brain injured some children. Over half of the 2480 awards for vaccine injury and death totaling billion dollars made under the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act involve pertussis vaccine. Pertussis vaccination rates are very high in the US According to the CDC, 84 percent of children under age three have received four DTaP shots. By the time American children enter kindergarten nearly every child has gotten all the CDC recommended pertussis shots. In 2009, the CDC said that

Parents ‘Crack The Code’ Teens Use When They Chat Online

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) July 20, 2006

Teen Chat Decoder.Com – Computer savvy teens using “acronyms” to juggle multiple instant messages & chat sessions, while circumventing parental control in order to keep on-line their conversations private.

“It’s no secret that kids have their own special language and they always have. Each generation of kids develops its own slang, and parents have always been in the dark to what it all really means,” says, Don Schnure, President of Parental Control Products, LLC, makers of Teen Chat Decoder.

It is really no different today. Teenagers still have their own special way of communicating with each other, and the Internet makes it even easier then ever. And by using acronyms (a new word formed by joining the initial letters of a series of words) teens chat using an online ‘short hand’ that leaves parents baffled.

Using Internet text messaging software like Instant Messenger, chatrooms like MySpace.com and text to text cell phone messaging, parents can get hopelessly lost in all the lingo. Not even the use of internet monitoring software can help parents, if they don’t know what is being said on-line.

“Parents don’t have a clue as to what their children are saying on-line, or more importantly, what’s being said to them,” continues Don Schnure. “It’s truly frightening what kind of information kids are giving away on-line, and to whom!”

Parents probably remember back in the 1980′s when “Awesome!” meant, “Cool”, and “Bad” meant, “Good.” However, they are shocked to find out what current slang terms like: “MIRL” (Let’s Meet In Real Life), “PLOS” (Parents looking over shoulder) or “AITR” (Adult in the room) really mean.

There are a thousand more acronyms kids use with meanings that are drug and sex related.

To help parents “stay in the loop,” Teen Chat Decoder.Com today released a free web site that makes it easy for parents to quickly ‘decode’ the online slang their teen’s use while chatting online.

To use the web site, users simple type in the acronym they want to decode into the and the web site instantly deciphers and displays the acronyms true meaning — some times there are several.

“To ensure that as many parents as possible will use the free web site, it’s been certified free of all spyware, adware, malware, pop ups and viruses by softpedia.com.
