Theatres In Hertfordshire And Their Repertoire-00-6988

Category : Cool Videos

West End theatre prices are quite steep, especially when you add on transport costs, and the evening’s trip may also involve a meal out, all of which could easily result in a bill of well over 100.

Consider the local alternative

All this does not mean Hertfordshire’s residents simply have to stay in for the evening to watch TV, play video games or read a book, as there are plenty of good theatres around them.

There are at least 36 theatrical venues are listed for the whole county, providing a decent local alternative to London’s West End offerings.
There is a good amateur theatre called the Abbey in St Albans which is performing Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly this year.

Theatres in Hertfordshire

Broxbourne Civic Centre is the home of the amateur Broxbourne Theatre Company. Such theatres might not provide the lavish scale of West End productions but they do give a high degree of intimacy, which is particularly appreciated by children. The Lytton Theatre in Stevenage is another fine example of amateur theatre in the county, currently performing Music Hall followed by Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The Barn Theatre in Welwyn Garden City also manages an impressive 10 productions per year, in spite of being an amateur group.

The Queen Mother Theatre in the historic market town of Hitchin puts on productions by a mix of amateur and professional companies. Kicking off 2012 with a professional production of Euripides’ Medea, they follow this with a dance show by a local school before the Bancroft Players perform an adaptation of Steinbeck’s tragic story, Of Mice and Men. Another theatre in Hertfordshire is the Watersmeet in Rickmansworth which also mixes amateur and professional work, along with an interesting series of film society nights.

Events include:

Fame (the musical)
The Vienna Festival Ballet performing Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Swan Lake

Festive season pantomimes

With a much more professional list of events is the Playhouse in Harlow, sitting on the border with Essex. They recently put on a well-reviewed Peter Pan that would match the best of the London stage’s efforts, and are following this up with a musical version of the Rapunzel fairy tale and Comedy @ the Playhouse.

However, perhaps the claim to be the best Hertford theatre might well go the theatre of that same name and place. Centrally situated in Hertford town on the corner of The Wash and St Andrew Street, you can visit Hertford Theatre’s in-house gallery to look at visual exhibits, as well as sampling the comfortable caf before going to an evening performance. Robin Hood – The Pantomime was on over the Christmas season but the must-have ticket this year is surely the Royal Opera House’s version of Cinderella. This fairytale is told through the medium of Massenet’s opera, Cendrillon. Beautiful singing, glorious sets and a heartwarming family friendly story all combine to make this a great night out.

Triple Town developer files lawsuit against alleged App Store copycat (Appolicious)

Category : Teen myspace

Appolicious – When it comes to the video game world, it’s nearly impossible to discuss a game without talking about all the other titles that came before it. Every game on the market, be it store shelves or the iTunes App Store, has built off the foundations of games that have come before, and that creates a tough spot for many game developers. At what point does a game stop building off another title’s ideas or being “inspired” by another work, and start being theft of an idea?

This book helps young people look critically at the world around them–television, movies, the music industry, and even their friends and acquaintances. Included are discussions of getting along with parents and teachers, dating, falling in love, body image, and eating disorders.

Readers are given an easy, effective method of problem-solving, useful in dealing with negative peer pressure. The emphasis is on how kids have more power over their lives than they may think and how they can bring about changes to make things better. For ages 13 and up.

The Lyric Stage Company of Boston Announces “Lyric First Stage” Wonderful Town and Macbeth Summer 2006 Teen Theatre Program and Performances

The Lyric Stage Company of Boston Announces “Lyric First Stage” Wonderful Town and Macbeth Summer 2006 Teen Theatre Program and Performances

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 29, 2006

After its successful inaugural year last summer, The Lyric Stage Company of Boston announces its second 5-week intensive summer theatre training program for teens, called Lyric First Stage. Led by actor and director Peter Carey, Lyric First Stage 2006 presents public performances of Leonard Bernstein’s musical Wonderful Town and Shakespeare’s Macbeth August 9-13 at The Lyric Stage Company, 140 Clarendon Street in Boston’s Back Bay. Tickets are $ 7 for students and $ 10 for adults, and are available by calling The Lyric Stage Company’s box office at 617.585.5678.

Lyric First Stage’s mission is to create an environment where, with professional mentors, a company of enthusiastic teens can explore ideas through text, music and movement, and refine their confidence and artistry in a series of workshops and a repertory theatre production experience. This summer, in addition to offering the acting emphasis, Lyric First Stage expanded with a second: stage management. The 2006 program includes 23 teenagers from over a dozen Massachusetts cities and professional staff including Peter Carey, Michael Byrne and Karen Gahagan. Program Director Peter Carey explains “I don’t know of a program that challenges young people in the way we are able to. The sense of community that is inherent in the work we do shows in the actors’ work both on and off stage.”

Lyric First Stage workshops include the areas of musical theatre and Shakespeare and focus on group ensemble work, musical theatre, text interpretation, scene work, song interpretation, audition workshop, musical sight reading and stage management. By working in teams and with theatre professionals, the students learn to develop skills in performance and production including the collaborative process with directors, designers and technicians. “We are thrilled to have Peter Carey directing this program,” says Lyric Stage Company Managing Director Sara Glidden. “His energy and passion for theatre inspire all of the participants.”

Celebrating the dichotomy of musical theatre and Shakespeare, Michael Byrne (Associate Program Director) explains, “The infectious fun of a musical is brought into the process of working on Shakespeare–and the precision of a beautiful language-focused Shakespeare play is realized in the musical. Both are celebrations of language and relationships. Participating in one–makes the other stronger.”

In the wake of a battle, the Scottish warrior Macbeth receives the prophecy that he shall be king. Lyric First Stage’s pilot program in 2005 presented Once On This Island (book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty) and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

The Lyric Stage Company, led by Producing Artistic Director, Sprio Veloudos (recent recipient of The Elliot Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence), was awarded a 2006 Elliot Norton Award for Janie Howland’s Outstanding Design for its productions Urinetown: The Musical and Talley’s Folley. “I am thrilled that Lyric First Stage has been so successful,” says Veloudos. “Since its inception, the program has been designed to give the young aspiring theatre artist the experience of working in a professional setting. Peter, Michael and Karen’s work with the students is both exemplary and inspiring. I also commend Managing Director Sara Glidden’s care of and commitment to the continuing growth of this program. ”
