Hazelden Publishing and Break the Cycle Join Forces to Create New Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program

Center City, MN (PRWEB) December 21, 2011

Dating abuse is a serious health concern for many students, and the prevalence of dating violence among high school age students is very high.

One in three high school students will be involved in an abusive relationship.
Forty-five percent of teenage girls ages 14 to 17 say they know someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend.
Nearly 80% of girls who have been physically abused in their intimate relationships continue to date their abuser.
Both girls and boys can be abused by a dating partner, and both girls and boys can be abusers.

“It’s not an issue of if or when an incident of dating violence will happen,” said Marjorie Gilberg, executive director at Break the Cycle. “Dating violence is happening now. That’s why Break the Cycle and Hazelden Publishing decided to come together to create Respect WORKS!, a new, best-practices model and program to address teen dating violence.”

Respect WORKS! integrates Hazelden’s evidence-based “Safe Dates” with Break the Cycle’s “School Policy Kit, [Ending Violence]” and “Speak.Act.Change” programs to give middle and high schools, youth service providers and domestic violence agencies the tools they need to respond effectively to teen dating violence issues on and off campus.

“Interactive quizzes, video clips, graphics, true stories, and online references make this combination of programs one-of-a-kind,” said Gilberg.

Break the Cycle and Hazelden Publishing are trusted organizations in violence prevention, advocacy and evidence-based youth programming. By combining their top dating violence resources, these two organizations are able to offer a comprehensive, best-practices model that empowers educators and students to make a difference. Visit Hazelden’s Violence Prevention Works website for more violence prevention information and resources.

Hazelden’s professional education website provides information about this and other online courses for counseling and education professionals.

Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault: Perspectives on What Works

Programs to Reduce Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault: Perspectives on What Works

Arlene Weisz and Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence prevention. Enhancing existing research with the shared wisdom of the nation’s prevention community, Weisz and Black describe program goals and content, recruitment strategies, membership, structure, and community involvement in practitioners’ own words. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant.

Weisz and Black show that multisession programs are most useful in preventing violence and assault, because they enable participants to learn new behaviors and change entrenched attitudes. Combining single- and mixed-gender sessions, as well as steering discussions away from the assignment of blame, also yield positive results. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing. Manuals help in guiding educators and improving evaluation, but they should also allow adolescents to direct the discussion. Good programs regularly address teachers and parents. Ultimately, though, Weisz and Black find that the ideal program retains prevention educators long after the apprentice stage, encouraging self-evaluation and new interventions based on the wisdom that experience brings.

Newhouse Celebrates 40th Anniversary With Campaign Against Teen Dating Violence

Overland Park, Kansas (Vocus/PRWEB) January 18, 2011

Ascend Integrated Media LLC, and its operating brand Ascend Media, has been chosen to develop newhouse4teens.org a website to promote a year-long campaign by Newhouse to educate teens and parents on the dangers of teen dating violence. The website is launching in time for National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

In celebrating their 40th anniversary Newhouse decided to place a spotlight on the issue of teen dating violence by launching a website dedicated to the topic. They are providing the resources necessary for teens, their parents, their teachers and their counselors to educate themselves about the signs and dangers of dating violence.

Along with the online campaign there is an ongoing educational initiative within local schools, Girl Scout troops and church groups providing the community with awareness about this growing problem. Fifty percent of teens know someone who has been physically, sexually, or verbally abusive in a dating relationship. Liz Claiborne Inc., Conducted by Teenage Research Unlimited, (February 2005). With statistics like these it’s easy to see how this problem is wide-spread and education is the only way to lead to prevention of such a prevalent issue facing our young teen population.

“Newhouse is very excited to launch the “Newhouse4Teens” website into the KC Metro Community. We believe that teen dating violence is not only underreported, but under recognized. Many parents, friends and community members have known a victim of dating violence but have either not recognized the signs or were unsure how to help. If information was more readily available and accessible, many victims would be able to break free of the relationship and attain safety. The foremost goal of the website is to help increase awareness and prevention of teen dating violence. We connected with Ascend initially by accident— but we are very pleased with the comprehensive services they delivered. It was also helpful that they understand our financial issues and tailored a package to fit our needs while not breaking our budget.” Bridgette Mavec, vice president of clinical services, Newhouse Domestic Violence Shelter

Cam Bishop, CEO Ascend Integrated Media expressed the custom publishing company’s pride at being chosen to partner on this campaign. “We are both pleased and honored to be working with Newhouse. It is a great organization and cause. For our team any time we can apply our creativity and media distribution skills to help our nonprofit clients develop greater awareness for their cause and to help enhance connections with volunteers and donors, it is very gratifying.”

About Ascend Integrated Media – Ascend Integrated Media is a custom media company, established in 1982 in Overland Park, Kansas. Ascend Integrated Media is uniquely positioned to work with companies to develop and produce brand-enhancing communications products. The company engages on behalf of the client to create and manage print and digital content associated with marketing, branding and social media initiatives.

About Newhouse – Founded in 1971, Newhouse provides safe shelter and critical services to women victims of domestic violence and their children. In 2009, Newhouse sheltered 943 women and children.
