The 2007 Summer Job Outlook for Teens: Teens Want to Work but Employers are Reluctant to Hire Them, Says Expert

Category : Teen Jobs

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (PRWEB) March 22, 2007

A majority of teens want to work this summer because they need the money and to get work experience but businesses are reluctant to hire teens especially those under 18 years old, according to Renée Ward, founder of http://www.Teens4Hire.org.

She sites a Teens4Hire.org survey of 1,000 teens 14-19 in which they say they want a meaningful paying job this summer. However, when the organization began polling businesses that have traditionally hired teens in the past, most were reluctant to say they’ll have summer openings teens could fill.

“Work experience at this stage in life is critical, and people who spend a large share of their young adult years unemployed have a hard time finding and keeping a job later in life,” Ward says.

“The human resource people were quick to say, we don’t hire teens,” says David Craig, a staff member of Teens4Hire.org. “And after I pointed out that 18 and 19 year olds were teenagers they’d say, well, we don’t hire minors.”

True, child labor laws restrict some of the jobs younger teens can fill (and no one wants them to get injured on the job) but Ward says employers might give younger teens more consideration for non-hazardous positions if they show up at their door. For employers concerned about running afoul of labor laws with regards to the employment of teens, Teens4Hire.org can conduct on-site training for supervisors and/or managers.

Teen summer employment tumbled in 2002 and has been hovering at some of the lowest levels in decades. Older teens 18-19, have more opportunities available to them. For those 14-17, it’s a hidden job market. Ward says, look for NOW HIRING signs wherever you go and ask if they would consider hiring you. “Employers want to hire people with a positive attitude and attitude is something a teen can control,” she says.

There are some bright spots according to Teens4Hire.org. Best bets are city-run youth programs; amusement, theme and recreation parks; ice cream/juice shops and grocery stores.

Regardless of your age, if you want a paying job you must demonstrate that you have the basic education required to do the job, are willing to work and learn, have a positive attitude, are reliable, and understand the needs of the business.

We provide a great deal of helpful information in the RESOURCES area of Teens4Hire.org to help teens land a job, get work experience and/or explore other ways to earn money.

Teens4Hire.org, reaches about 2 million self-motivated teens across the U.S. looking for work. If you have an opening a teen could fill and/or know of opportunities for teens in your area–contact Teens4Hire.org

Written by two teens who know what teens do and don’t know about cooking, TEENS COOK is an instructional cookbook that teaches young adults how to make great meals—and be confident and independent in the kitchen. Authors Megan and Jill Carle are teenage sisters with nothing much in common when it comes to food—except that they both know how to cook really well. One buys ingredients she likes and figures out what to make when she gets home; the other follows every recipe to the letter. One is a vegetarian who’s drawn to ethnic food; the other prefers all-American comfort food. Together, they’re a dynamic duo who have created and mastered more than 75 recipes for breakfasts, snacks, sides, family meals, dinners for one, and desserts. In TEENS COOK, the Carle sisters also share their kitchen know-how on averting and fixing disasters, dealing with cookbook math (fractions and metrics—ugh!), deciphering culinary vocabulary (all those terms we kind of know, but not really), explaining chemistry (why and how stuff goes right and wrong in the kitchen), and avoiding accidents (can you say “grease fire”? oops!). For teens (and tweens) who are tired of eating what their parents decide to fix, TEENS COOK offers foolproof advice for whipping up some tasty home-cooked meals of their own.

When teen girls want to paint their room a different color, do they actually do the work themselves?

Category : TEEN NEWSPAPER

I see a lot of questions on here from teen girls wanting to paint their rooms, deciding on a color scheme, etc. But what percent of them actually do the painting themselves? Do they know about all the tools (types of rollers, etc.) and other tricks that professionals use? Do they know about using primer as a base or about the different sheens of top-coat paint? Or is it usually their parents that do all the painting for them?

I want to make youtube videos displaying peer pressure situations for teens and how to get out of them? Good?

Category : Teen Videos

I want to make youtube videos about the peer pressures teen have to face. I’m think of making videos that display real life situations like a guy asking a girl to have sex yet she doesn’t want to go that far. I want to explain a “cool” way to say no. Do you think people will even watch?

Oh and I’m not talking about making those old 90′s type videos where its so lame. These situations would actually be what teens have to face.

Websites That Teens Want

Category : Teen Music

The teens want good websites that offer music, videos, books and teen community. If they have to spend their times on these, it is important for them to find out how these sites could help them.

Music

By just using key words such as “website on music”, the teens can have immediate access to numerous sites, learn on issues involving music and the music industry, enter in contests and can enjoy free downloads. Participating in forums allow the teens to share their opinion, defend their pop stars and criticize others. Most often, the teens’ search for music websites depend on the kind of music they are most interested in.

Video

Everybody loves videos. The adults love videos that depict history, family life and legal issues. The kids love cartoons and fairy tales. And the teens just love anything. They want live concerts, mysteries, violence, sex, thrillers, and any video that their hands can get into. If these teens have all their time to listen to music, so with videos. They just shut their doors, stay at their rooms, and presto, they are in the worlds of make believe while crunching at those goodies.

Selecting the proper website on videos is very important. If these videos have advantages, so with their negative impacts. The teens see themselves as real heroes. If what he is seeing are violent videos where the actors punch their enemies, back to the real world, these teens may gain the compulsion to kick other teens who bar their ways. They are heroes, right?

Websites on sex videos have to be avoided. These videos create on teens the lust for actual sex. Premarital sex on teens just seem a normal expression of themselves, they can have sex anytime they want. ‘Fuck you’ is just a mere accepted expression. Anyway, abortive pills and condoms are just across the counter. Morality can just easily be flagged down.

Books

Some teens want to read books and information can be accessed online. Book reading is a very good recreational tool because it helps the teens develop the love in reading, increases their vocabulary and use of works, makes them creative and those fictional characters could influence them to excel in whatever gigs they are to. Just ensure that these teens are not spending much money on books and know the best time to read. Being books worms consume much time that can be devoted to other necessary activities.

Community

Teens want to belong to a community where they can interact with other teens. Teen communities can be accessed just on line. They can make friends from around the globe, share their experiences, argue and discuss on issues. Some teen communities however do not allow the sharing of photos, videos and contact numbers. If the teens want more than an online teen community can offer, then they may participate in teen communities that afford live interaction. There they can mingle with other teens, learn tradecraft, attend lectures with the in-house guidance counselors, and to top it all, join youth camps, tours and environmental awareness programs such as tree planting. Just use the proper key words such as ‘local teen community’.

The teens want music, videos, book reading and teen communities. Although there are a good number of websites that discusses issues on these, it can not replace the best forum which is the family. The parents must spend more time with their teens and have an open discussion on subjects that the teens want. Having no time to monitor their teens might bring repercussions that they will regret later.

What Christian college should I go to if I want to get into the music industry?

Category : College News

Hey everybody. Right now I’m a (female) sophomore in high school in Omaha, NE. I’m trying to figure out where I want to go to college. I’m planning on working in the music industry when I graduate. I know of a Christian college called Evangel in Springfield, MO that offers a “Bachelor of Science in Music Industry”. I want a program like that, but I also think it would be good if there was a record label near my college so I could possibly work as a college representative. Do any of you know where there are any Christian colleges with a good music industry program, AND a record label nearby so I could possibly work there while I’m in college?
