National TO SAVE A LIFE Week Announced to Touch 1 Million Lives with a Message of Hope for Hurting Teens

Category : Teen Facebook

Oceanside, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2010

During the week of September 6-12, corresponding with National Suicide Prevention Week, NewSong Pictures and Outreach Films, the creators of the #1 faith-based film of 2010 To Save A Life plan to use the movie as a vehicle to save lives and inspire teens to reach out to their communities and engage with the hurting and lonely in their midst.

Since its theatrical release in January, To Save A Life has impacted over 600,000 teens, youth workers, coaches, pastors and parents who viewed the film in theaters. Thousands have written in to the To Save A Life Web site (ToSaveALifeMovie.com/stories) to share their response to the film. And just under 160,000 have created an active community on the To Save A Life Facebook page sharing their compelling and often heartbreaking personal stories, and supporting each other as they navigate the challenges of life.

Topically, the film fearlessly tackles a number of subjects that teens confront on a daily basis, including depression, suicide, bullying, teen pregnancy, cutting, substance abuse and body image. High school is a much more challenging place than it was just a few years ago, and teens need help and guidance in navigating these challenges.

Because of this, the teams at Outreach have set an objective of seeing one million lives touched during this week through the hosting of To Save A Life events and movie screenings across America.

The concept is simple. During this week, churches, families, pastors, teachers, coaches, mentors and teens themselves are encouraged to invite their friends to watch To Save A Life with them. The goal is to have the film shown in over 10,000 locations, where every teen in America can see the movie either in a church, home, store, classroom, auditorium or theater.

Afterwards, participants are challenged to go to the next level. It’s not enough to just talk about the change you want to see—To Save A Life Week is about action, and viewers are encouraged to be a catalyst for this change. Some students may start a “Lunch Club” to help befriend the lonely kids in their school. Some may start actively inviting new people to their youth group or club meetings. Others may plan events with experts or mentors who can help teens navigate the challenges in their lives. A new school year is never easy for teens in crisis—To Save A Life Week can help ease some of these tensions while providing a solid message of hope for those who are hurting.

To help teens and those who care for them, Outreach has created a series of tools designed to get the process and conversation started, including inspirational books, novels, social media tools, curriculums and topical helps. Several Web sites, including ToSaveALifeLeaders.com, can help leaders looking for ideas and resources. Outreach is dedicated to maintaining the momentum of the To Save A Life movement and inspiring a generation to reach out to hurting and lonely people.

To Save A Life releases on DVD and Blu-ray August 3 through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment/Affirm Films. To Save A Life is rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving teen suicide, teen drinking, some drug content, disturbing images and sexuality.

10 Timely Safety Tips for Parents with Teens on the Road for Schoolies Week

10 Timely Safety Tips for Parents with Teens on the Road for Schoolies Week

(PRWEB) November 9, 2010

As Year 12 exams wrap up this week in many states, thousands of Australian teens are preparing to hit the roads for Schoolies Week celebrations.

For concerned parents, The Buzz Insurance, has prepared 10 top tips to discuss and plan with their teens so they’re better prepared to get to their destinations safely.

The Buzz Insurance, CEO, Leona Murphy said for many teens embarking on a Schoolies Week, the road trip will be the longest distance they have driven in a car.

“It’s exciting for teens, but for parents it’s worrying as their children get behind the wheel with friends on unfamiliar roads and conditions,” Ms Murphy said.

The tips have been developed in conjunction with the Buzz ‘Parents with Ps’ community safety initiative and now is the ideal time for parents to talk with their teens about their plans.

Parents can start by talking to their teen and prepare an agreement which outlines the conditions of them going on the road trip and the consequences of not following the rules. This may include restricting night time driving, keeping to speed limits, the number of passengers and no alcohol or mobile phone while driving. A copy of The Buzz Parent-Teen agreement is available at http://www.thebuzzinsurance.com.au.

Charting a safe route the key to a safe journey. Avoid deserted roads (even if they’re shorter), mark petrol pumps, rest areas and other service locations.

An early start is better than night driving. If the drive is on rural roads, avoid driving around dusk and dawn when visibility is hampered and when there’s wildlife on the roads. To reduce fatigue, encourage the use of the cruise control (if fitted) and take plenty of short breaks.

Parents can also play an important part in the selection of the right car for their teen. The old family car may not be their best companion on a long drive. Modern cars have safety features that may prevent an accident (such as ABS or ESC) and offer added crash protection.

Cars shouldn’t be overloaded – it affects performance. Parents can encourage teens to travel with a small group only. If all seats are occupied, or the car is heavily loaded than spread the load out. Put heavier items as far forward in the boot as possible. If it’s a hatchback or station wagon, luggage should be properly secured. Teens must be made aware that braking distances increase when the car is loaded.

Prepping the vehicle is also very important, with the car serviced and oil levels checked. Fill up the fuel tank, check the wear of the tyres and the air pressure. Top up the coolant, battery and windscreen washer.

Run through basic car maintenance like how to change a tyre, what to do if engine overheats etc. Make sure there is a properly inflated spare tyre, tool kit and extra water in the car.

Carrying a duplicate key may come in handy. If the car has an immobiliser, a duplicate key may be expensive but potentially cheaper than sending a spare key interstate.

Make a list of emergency contacts like roadside assist, the insurance company, family and friends, as In case of Emergency (ICE) numbers in their mobile phone.

During the Schoolies Week, teens should be encouraged to use cabs or public transport. If they have to drive to a location, they must decide to have a designated driver who isn’t going to drink (this can also be part of your Buzz Parent – Teen Agreement).

Parents of teen drivers can find more useful tips, tools and resources on Parents with P’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/buzzparentswithps

New Soroptimist White Paper and Bookmark Support National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week

Category : Teen dating

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) January 29, 2009

As many as one-third of teens in the United States experience some form of abuse in their romantic dating relationships, according to a new white paper recently released by Soroptimist, an international volunteer organization for business and professional women headquartered in Philadelphia.

The white paper, “Teen Dating Violence” provides an in-depth look at the many abuse issues teens face and is being made public on the Soroptimist website http://www.soroptimist.org in support of National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week, Feb. 2-6, first declared by Congress in 2006. Soroptimist also has created a bookmark for its club members to distribute to raise awareness about teen dating violence.

“Teen dating violence is a hidden epidemic that is growing at an alarming rate,” said Soroptimist Executive Director Leigh Wintz, CAE. “It is estimated that 33 percent of teenage girls have experienced physical violence at the hands of a dating partner and that young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rates of relationship violence. What is even more disturbing is that too often parents and teachers are unaware of this abuse.”

While physical abuse is part of teen dating violence–sexual, verbal and emotional abuse are also used to gain power and maintain control over a dating partner, according to the white paper. In addition, more teens are using technological devices, such as cell phones and computers, to abuse and/or control partners in dating relationships.

Teen dating violence also is impacting a younger number of teens –or tweens–those ages 11 to 14, according to a study commissioned by Liz Claiborne, Inc. Research indicates that dating relationships and dating violence and abuse start by age 11, much earlier than previously thought. This early dating, coupled with sexual activity, appears to fuel extremely high levels of dating violence and abuse during teen years.

Girls who experience teen dating violence tend to have health-related issues, such as drug or alcohol abuse, eating disorders and depression. Many even attempt suicide. Often, these girls carry patterns of violence into future relationships.

The Soroptimist white paper examine these concerns and the bookmark lists characteristics of a healthy relationship on one side, dangerous traits on the other, along with prevention hotline numbers. Soroptimist clubs will be distributing them in schools and other teen-centered locations.

“During National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week, and throughout the year, we need to raise awareness about this crucial issue,” Wintz added. “Parents especially need to look at warning signs explained in our white paper and listed on our bookmark. The public as a whole can no longer ignore this because it is impacting too many teens today–especially young women–who are victims of violence that goes unacknowledged and unreported. Perhaps worse is the lifetime cycle of abuse that is often established during these years.”

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa., Soroptimist is an international volunteer women’s organization offering programs that improve social and economic conditions for women and girls. Its major program, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards, provides cash grants for women seeking to improve their lives with the help of additional education and training. Each year, more than $ 1 million is disbursed to deserving women through this award-winning program. Soroptimist, a 501(c )(3) organization that relies on charitable donations to support its programs, also sponsors the Live Your Dream campaign in recognition of the power of women and their dreams. Planned Parenthood Kicks Off Sex Ed Week of Action

Category : Teen News

Denver (Vocus) September 29, 2009

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, with 24 health centers throughout Colorado, is working to raise awareness about the need for Congress to fully fund medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education for all teens during a week of action (Sept. 28 – Oct. 2) called Sex Education: Protecting Our Future.

Amid the news that the United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy of the most developed countries in the world and that at least one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease, Planned Parenthood affiliates and PPRM’s Advocates for Choice (A4C) campus chapters are sponsoring grassroots events and contacting elected officials to urge them to fully fund sex education to address these public health issues.

“An estimated 729,000 teenagers are expected to become pregnant this year, and nearly four million will contract a STD,” said PPRM President and CEO Vicki Cowart. “To reduce these alarmingly high numbers, teens in Colorado should have access to comprehensive, age-appropriate information and education, giving them resources to make responsible decisions about their health and their lives.”

PPRM is a recognized regional leader in advancing and providing comprehensive, medically accurate and age-appropriate sex education. PPRM offers short and long-term programs, which target individuals of all ages. In 2008, PPRM educators reached 17,869 people in Colorado alone through 1,960 education sessions, working with 200 diverse collaborators including school districts and religious organizations. PPRM is also a member of the Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance, a statewide coalition recently formed to increase access to comprehensive sex education.

In the last decade, more than $ 1.5 billion federal and state dollars were wasted on what was proven to be dangerous abstinence-only programs that deny teenagers lifesaving information. The Obama administration has ended funding for ineffective abstinence-only programs.

Recently, a study by the Guttmacher Institute found that most federally funded abstinence-only programs do not help delay teens’ sexually activity. In contrast, the study reports comprehensive sex education programs had a positive impact and should be more widely used.

A nationwide study conducted by the University of Washington found that teens who had comprehensive sex education were less likely to become teen parents than teens who had no sex education or who were in abstinence-only programs.

At the federal level, President Obama and a majority in the U.S. Congress are supporting medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education, which helps reduce teen pregnancy, by including it in their budget appropriations bills.

As a health care provider, Planned Parenthood knows firsthand the power of education to help teens make responsible decisions about their health. Every year, PPRM provides more than 127,000 women, men, and teens with the health care and information they need to prevent unintended pregnancy and protect their health.
