GetFitConnecticut! A New Year’s Resolution for the State of Connecticut

Pledge to Get Fit in 2012!

East Hartford, Connecticut (PRWEB) December 26, 2011

The Nutmeg State Games, which for twenty-three years has been responsible for managing Connecticut’s largest premier amateur athletic competition, announced the launch of its latest state-wide initiative to promote fitness and a healthy lifetsyle for all age groups. Called “GetFitConnecticut”, the initiative combines the power of modern social networking tools like Facebook® and Twitter® with friendly competition among individuals who will form small teams to compete on a variety of wellness metrics. GetFitConnecticut provides a team structure that capitalizes on the support that already exists among family members, friends and co-workers. The event will span 100 days from start to finish, and prizes will be awarded to individuals and teams achieving various fitness goals. The GetFitConnecticut competition will start on January 14, 2012 with New Year Resolution pledges being accepted now online at getfitconnecticut.com.

The Associate Executive Director of the Nutmeg State Games, Patrick Fisher, explained the event’s intent: “The purpose of GetFitConnecticut is to engage people in understanding the many dimensions to wellness, and how they can achieve positive results across a wider range of metrics than just what they see on a weight scale. We want to show people positive correlations on a bigger range of indicators of health, including blood pressure, blood sugar, total cholesterol, among other data points that are easily accessible via routine blood tests and self-measurement.”

In 2010, Connecticut had an obesity rate of 22.5% according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC also estimated annual medical costs associated to obesity at $ 147 Billion in the United States. According to a recently released report by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Connecticut spent $ 8,654 per resident on health care costs, nearly 27 percent more than the national average of $ 6,815. Connecticut spends more on health care per capita than 48 US states; only Massachusetts and Alaska spend more. Research shows that moderate physical activity can substantially reduce the risk of developing or dying from heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and high blood pressure, and can also dramatically reduce health care expenditure for these largely preventable chronic diseases.

Dr. Jacob Sattelmair, a principal at wellfra.me and a Harvard trained expert on public health and behavioral science who has provided scientific guidance to the event commented: “The prevalence of obesity and other cardiometabolic risk factors in the US is alarmingly high. Many individuals are unaware of their disease risks, and still others may lack the resources or motivation to sustain the lifestyle behavior changes necessary to lower their risk and improve their health. There is no silver bullet to this epidemic, however there are multiple promising avenues through which to affect change. Programs like GetFitConnecticut that can tap into key psychological motivators such as achievement, reward, status and competition hold much promise as a resource to help groups of individuals make and sustain behavior change.”

The GetFitConnecticut competition is open to individuals of all ages, including teenagers under the age of 18 with parental consent. The event will track individual and team progress through the collection of data, including the type, duration and frequency of physical activity engaged in, as well as other measures of wellness including weight data, blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

The event will initially run as a pilot with a limited number of available “bibs” – the number tags that runners use for competitive events. The prizes will include crowd-pleasing favorites like Apple® iPad devices and iPods. The cost to register for the 100 day event is $ 29. Registration opens today and will end on January 14, 2012. Michigan Football Tickets – Do They Hold The Same return As 10 Years Ago Clay Matthews Jersey?

Category : Teen Fitness

With time, Michigan football tickets have become special for many reasons. The Wolverines not just possess the most wins for a college football enter in the United States, but at this moment they also have the greatest winning area of any major college team. For more than 100 years, the Wolverines have been winning greatly, counting over 850 victories for their credit during that time.

However, the Wolverines have “struggled” a little in recent years as teams in the Big Ten have begun to compete with them regularly Clay Matthews Jersey. There needs to be a disclaimer in place, however, in that an “off” year for the Wolverines could be an outstanding season for many other programs. Regardless, Michigan fans have come to expect a particular degree of dominance over time, and a look at the previous seasons may show why the perception would be that the team isn’t “premier” program it was previously.

The beginning of the Perceived “Decline”

The Wolverines won their first “Modern Era” national title in 1997 after finishing an undefeated season. It was the pinnacle for any program that had won six Big Ten titles Clay Matthews Jersey in the earlier 10 seasons, and the Wolverines were heroes to students, fans and alumni around the globe. Players for example Brian Griese and Charles Woodson were the heavens of this team, and the program seemed to be as strong as ever.

They had another strong year in 1998 once they won another Big Ten title, but didn’t go to the Rose Bowl that year due to a tiebreaker rule. They followed that season with another strong 10-2 record in 1999 but didn’t win the Big Ten, finishing behind Wisconsin, who went to the Rose Bowl and represented the Big Ten with a victory.

It had been the dawn from the 21st Century that resulted in fans and alumni grumbling the program was starting to “decline.” You would not have known it based on sales of Michigan football tickets, because the “Big House” was and it is still packed for every game with over 100,000 fans. However, the Wolverines lost three games in 2000 and did not advance towards the Rose Bowl.

2001 led to more grumbling, as the team lost four games, including losses to hated rivals Michigan State and Pitt. They also lost to Tennessee within the Florida Citrus Bowl. The Wolverines lost three games in each one of the next three seasons, as well as an much more troubling trend started to emerge – the Wolverines had lost their recent dominance over the Buckeyes. This, perhaps a lot more than every other factor, has resulted in dissatisfaction among Wolverine fans.

The underside seemed to fall out in 2005, once the team posted a 7-5 record and lost to Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio State and Nebraska. 7-5 can be a good record for many programs, but it is unacceptable in Ann Arbor, and Coach Lloyd Carr is feeling heat these days Clay Matthews Jersey.

The “Decline” in Reality

A look at the numbers shows a slight, but not rapid, decline in Michigan’s winning percentage. Since they started to play football in 1883, the Wolverines won 75% of their games. Since 2001, Michigan is 44-18, which still leads to a 70% winning percentage. So then, so why do fans perceive the Wolverines to stay decline? Probably two reasons more than any others – they have not been beating Ohio State with regularity, losing three of the last four games from the Buckeyes. They’ve also lost 11 games previously 3 years, which is more than fans are familiar with.

What does all of this mean? First, this program isn’t in decline. They had a tough year in 2005, but that will probably look like an aberration 10 years from now. Secondly, Michigan football tickets are as special because they ever happen to be.

Psychologist’s New Book Probes His Own Troubled Teenage Years for Insights Into Thriving During Difficult Times

“Shrink” by David Wolgroch

Barnet, London (PRWEB) May 09, 2011

How does a Jewish honor student growing up in the Bronx in 1969 end up a member of an extorting Puerto Rican gang? Further, once an avowed member, how does he manage to leave the gang unscathed, and go on to a successful career as a respected clinical psychologist?

David Wolgroch’s new memoir, Shrink, now available as an e-book from eBookIt.com, uses his own adolescence as a case study. Starting from the comfort of his present day private practice in a plush tree-lined London suburb, Wolgroch regresses to the gritty reality of growing up in an urban neighbourhood in ethnic transition, including the irony of assimilating himself into a Puerto Rican gang as a means of survival in the midst of turbulence, only to then extract himself from it, in a controversial act of self-preservation, that was as cleverly brilliant as it was selfish and manipulative.

With a fresh and engaging storytelling, Wolgroch explores the landscape of both his neighbourhood and his teenage mind. Wolgroch writes of these experiences in a straightforward manner, which is neither self-congratulatory nor excessively penitential in tone, and clearly aware of both the virtues and vices of his own machinations.

“As a clinical psychologist, I wanted to illustrate resilience, positive coping, and urban survival using my actual experiences growing up in an impoverished neighbourhood during a time in which rules, role models and directions were unclear, if not abandoned—much like today,” says Wolgroch. “Hopefully, Shrink will inform and inspire others to believe in their ability to cope and pursue personal goals rather than succumb to failure and negative influences. My actual experience illustrates how one can turn potential crises into a positive experience. In other words, how to thrive rather than simply survive in difficult times.”

Besides the usual exposure to various types of “persons in crisis” common to his profession, Wolgroch himself is the son of Holocaust survivors, and has clinical experience helping Holocaust survivors cope with haunting memories. He is also the author of Creation Out of Nothingness, a personal journey exploring the pervasive effects of the Holocaust on four generations of his family. Naturally, his personal and clinical insights into survival and resilience transcend far beyond the pages of a textbook or scholarly paper.

By the end of the book, the author returns again to the green leather armchair of his office through an extended epilogue, which extracts key psychological concepts from his own memoirs, covering personality, motivation, resilience, and ethics. These supplementary reflections provide a deeper analyses of the characters and themes of the story, avoiding the dual temptations of a preachy tone and pretension.

“Having discovered my ability to influence the ideas and actions of others, I eventually found my vocation as a psychologist,” says the author. “The distinction between caring for someone and exploiting them is precariously fragile. When I discovered my aptitude in this area, I was clearly engaged in more exploitation than caring. As a clinical psychologist, I can still influence others, but with the goal of assisting them with getting some aspect of their life back on track,” says Wolgroch.

Rarely do we find a “shrink” brave enough to turn the light inward, and allow his own young life to serve as both an example and a warning. Wolgroch opens the door, and for the reader’s benefit, releases what surely would have been more safely kept in the confines of the clinician’s office.

Teen readers, who face their own share of peer pressure, struggles with self-esteem, and search for an identity, will surely be drawn to Shrink, though Wolgroch offers plenty of grist for adult minds as well.

Shrink is now available as an e-book from eBookIt.com, Amazon.com, BN.com and several other online retailers. Author David Wolgroch is available for insightful and entertaining interviews.

Several Sources Celebrates 30 Years Serving Homeless Pregnant Women and Their Saved Babies While Remembering President Ronald Reagan and Mother Teresa

• In 1988 Ronald Reagan invited Kathy DiFiore to the White House to honor her work for pregnant women and their children and the work of the Several Sources volunteers

(PRWEB) November 03, 2011

On October 21, 2011 over 200 people came to The Sheraton Hotel, Mahwah, NJ for one purpose to “honor and celebrate the mission of sheltering mothers and babies in need” with Kathy DiFiore, the Founder of Several Sources Shelters Inc. The celebration was highlighted by N.J. State Gerald Cardinale’s explanation of Kathy’s 1984 fight to overcome a $ 10,000 NJ State Rooming and Boarding House Fine which eventually was accomplished with the help of Noble Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa of Calcutta. A historical video showing the work of the Several Sources Shelters being honored at the White House by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 was shown. The video also showed past and present photos of almost one hundred of the thousands of children whose pregnant mothers had lived at the Several Sources Shelters.

DiFiore commented, “Little did I know that when I opened my Ramsey home back in 1981 to a few pregnant teenagers, an organization called “Several Sources” would evolve thirty years later into five shelters and a wonderful ‘baby saving’ effort. We thank God for tonight’s blessed celebration of the gift of life.”

The evening’s focus was apparent. Babies were everywhere including the current shelter babies, Eijah, Viktor, Jullian ,Alanna & Jordany, all their mothers, as well as the young pregnant women living at the Shelters now. The “Alumni” represented by 24 children of all ages including young adults returned with their mothers. All participated in the sharing of memories and in the celebration.

One of the Several Sources children who is now an adult, Christopher Nanfria from Otisville, New York, 22, made a plea to those in attendance to please continue to help young women who have no place to live during their pregnancies. He ended by saying, “Thank you to everyone that helped my mom 23 years ago.” His proud mother took off work to join the celebration and see her son give his first public speech.

Comments from some of the younger Several Sources alumni included:

Darryl 10 – “Thank You” “I’m happy that you helped me with my mom” “Happy 30th Anniversary” “My mom gave birth to me at Several Sources.”
Brianna 15 – “I wanted to come because my mother told me so much about the place where she had to come when she was pregnant.”

Brooklyn 6 – “Several Sources helps moms & babies.”
Alex 9 – “Hi Kathy, I am here to celebrate.”
David 6 – “This is my best day ever.”
Jonathan 7 – “Happy 30th Anniversary, Kathy. We love you.”

Fr. John Catoir, JCD, Founder and President of the St. Jude Media Ministry making the invocation said, “Kathy DiFiore, our champion for 30 yrs, it is fitting that we have a celebration. We want to honor the work which you have done and the Grace of God that has carried you and enabled you to do it.”

NJ Assemblyman Robert Schroeder presented DiFiore with a NJ Senate and Assembly Joint Legislative Resolution by Senator Cardinale, Assemblywoman VanDervalk and Schroeder honoring DiFiore, and the Several Sources Shelter volunteers for working “tirelessly and effectively in benefit of others” by “offering a home for mothers and their babies … are recognized and saluted for their outstanding service and exemplary dedication that have contributed to its sterling reputation to the strength and success of the State of New Jersey, the vitality of our communities and the effectiveness of our American society”.

In a letter dated October 30, 2011, Princeton University Scholar and McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Dr. Robert P. George writes, “I visited the Several Sources website where I saw a photograph of Kathy with a little black baby in one arm, a little white baby in the other arm, and a little Latino baby just over her shoulder. My eyes moistened with emotion as I thought about the more than 15,000 unique and irreplaceable lives that have been saved due to the self-sacrificial love of Kathy DiFiore and the men and women who have been inspired to follow her lead and join her efforts.”

Genoveva Wallach – Director of the United Nations Women’s Guild – Secretariat Group was in attendance to present a grant to the Several Sources Shelters and a Certificate of Appreciation to DiFiore.

Clergy representing both the Paterson and Newark Dioceses, educators, local entrepreneurs, along with many other supporters; some who have been with Several Sources from its inception were also in attendance.

Many changes have taken place since Several Sources Shelters began in 1981. “The foundation has always taught Holy Chastity, Bible study and supported daily prayer and obtaining a solid education” explained DiFiore (http://www.chastitycall.com). Young teens reach out for help and counseling through the churches, local priests/ministers and on a personal level through their friends & family members.

Today Several Sources counseling often takes place over the Internet. A pregnant teen in crisis will use search engine words such as pregnant, homeless, need help and the result will be finding the Several Sources Shelters websites http://www.lifecall.org or http://www.severalsources.net. Several Sources also has a positive presence on the “Web” through Twitter, @severalsources and Facebook, Pregnant Free Shelter and Counseling

DiFiore has been a member of St Paul’s Parish in Ramsey, NJ for over thirty years. She has also spent her last thirty years devoted to saving the lives of God’s most precious, the pre born, “We are taught through our faith that God has a specific purpose for each of us, saving the lives of these babies is mine. Believing that I am following God’s will for me has given me the needed strength, particularly during those most difficult financial times when I am struggling to keep the shelter doors open.” In an emotional moment, Kathy explains, “God will never abandon His precious little ones, He, is their Creator.”

Habbo Hotel Turns 10 Years Old and the Success Story Continues

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 14, 2010

Habbo Hotel, the world’s largest teen virtual community and social game, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary and the success continues. More than three million new Habbo characters are created each month to participate in the virtual hotel.

Habbo Hotel by the Numbers (June 2010):

172 million characters / avatars created
40 million monthly user hours, average session length 42 minutes
15 million monthly unique visitors
120 million active user-created rooms
Users from over 150 countries
11 language versions

Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DLWLMQxHUY to watch a Habbo 10-year anniversary video interview with co-founder Sampo Karjalainen and CEO Timo Soininen.

From a Hobby to an International Phenomenon

The Habbo Hotel story began in 1999 when founders Sampo Karjalainen and Aapo Kyrölä, both in their 20s, created an online application called “Mobile Disco.” It was purely a hobby, a kind of graphical chat site for a friend’s band, and it quickly gained lots of fans in Finland and around the world. Karjalainen and Kyrölä decided to develop the idea further and used it in an advertising campaign for a Finnish mobile operator in February 2000. It was a simple snowball fight game, but it became the beginning of Habbo Hotel.

At this time, Karjalainen and Kyrölä were also thinking about virtual payments, and created the Habbo Hotel micropayments business model. The company, Sulake, was founded in May 2000, and “Hotelli Kultakala,” the original Finnish Habbo Hotel, opened a couple of months later.

The first international Habbo Hotel opened in the UK in early 2001, and over the next couple of years the company founded most of the current Habbo Hotel sites and language versions. Over the past few years, Sulake has further expanded its reach by making the virtual hotel service and local payment methods available in new countries, which now total 32.

The Secret is…Continual Development!

Habbo Hotel is one of the oldest active teen online services in the world and it is still growing. Habbo’s success factor has been its continuous development and commitment to make the user experience better. The goal has always been to keep the service fresh and relevant by frequently introducing new features and gaming elements, arranging engaging campaigns, enriching the virtual economy and payment models and nurturing the community.

The site’s persistent efforts to stay current have always been strongly influenced by user feedback and deep insight into teenagers’ lives, whether it’s about their values and attitudes, purchasing behavior or brand preferences. Updated on a yearly basis, the Global Habbo Youth Survey (http://webstore.sulake.com/) examines the interests and online habits of Habbo Hotel’s vast audience and provides an enormous amount of information on the world’s teens.

Habbo Hotel also regularly surveys and polls its users, asking about various hot topics. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, Habbo asked its users about the future of social online services and internet usage in general. The findings reveal an array of interesting predictions from nearly 50,000 teens globally.

Future Outlook is Upbeat

Sulake, the company behind Habbo Hotel, recently announced the best quarterly financial results (http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/05/prweb4027784.htm) in its history. With Q1/2010 sales up 25% compared to the same time last year, Sulake expects revenue growth to continue at the current rate and to maintain healthy profitability. A decade of continual development and rigorous work combined with favorable market growth is now paying off for the company.
