Today’s Teen Don’t Tweet
Twitter is a world-famous social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users called tweets to send text- based messages of up to 140 characters. In the year 2006, when Jack Dorsey started twitter, the majority of its visitors were youngsters mainly students who used to have a twitter account to remain connected with their friends. But, as the time passed professionals started using twitter for business and promotion. Presently a major shift can be observed in the kind of tweets, twitter has. Now, the tweets are big corporate houses, celebrities and other professionals. It no longer can be considered as the social networking site, it became a tool for branding and promotion.
After USA and Germany, India has the maximum active users of Twitter in the whole world. But, in the recent survey conducted on Indian-teens, a fact that came out was, âTeens Don’t tweet. Majority of the teen-agers never had an account on Twitter and the teens that had account, now have stopped twitting. On asking they said that, âwe could not find our friends on twitter so we don’t use twitter any more instead we prefer Facebook and Orkut for networking’. Twitter being a free service has given a platform to exchange information world-wide, it is now used in protests, politics, campaigning, emergencies, survey opinion, education, brand promotion, public relations, fund raising, pranks and all that one can possibly think of.
Although, twitter is ranked as one of the top 50 most popular websites world wide by Alexa’s web traffic analysis but today the largest age demographic of the site is 35-to-45-year-olds. Recently, an Indian actor of world fame Amitabh Bachan created an account on Twitter and in a day he was able pull 37,500 fans on twitter whereas another world famous Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, a way back when started tweeting got 80,000 fans from across the world on twitter with in the first 24 hours. These two famous personalities have instigated a trend of celeb-twitting in India to check their popularity and to promote their personal labels.
