What’s it like to be tested for teen depression at the doctors?

Category : Teen Depression

I think that I may have depression (i’m a teen) and I am going to talk to my mom about it and see if I can go get tested for teen depression. I was wondering what it was like, what the doctor does, and if they have to do any blood drawing? Thanks in advance and happy newyears.

no need to worry, no blood tests :) i was terrified that I would need to seek medical testing for a diagnosis. I spoke with a psychologist for a few weeks, and later a psychiatrist for medication. You get diagnosed on what you tell the doctors, and the way they perceive you. Good luck

Hey…I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling depressed. But, I’m going through the same thing now and am in Psychotherapy. When you tell your mom, you may want to mention that you want to see a Psychologist. Family doctors sometimes know how to handle mental health situations, but they are not trained in the same ways a Psychologist is…and cannot help you as well as they can. If your mom finds a Psychologist for you, here’s how things should typically go. First, you and your mom will have to go to the first session together. I know this may sound scary…I hated that I had to go with my mom, but the Psychologist will not expect you to talk about everything in the the first session and she will understand that you will most likely be very uncomfortable. The main goal in the first session is to understand why you’ve come in. When I went for my first session, the Psychologist took me and my into her office (chairs and a lot of books) and asked my mom if she had noticed any behavior patterns lately that were different than normal. She asked a little about stressors and then referred to the DSM-IV (a mental illness diagnosis book) to diagnose me with depression. After that, she asked my mom to leave the room so I could talk with her alone. She explained that everything is confidential except in the instance that 1) you are being hurt by someone else 2) you are hurting yourself and 3) you are going to hurt someone else. Then we talked lightly about some surface issues I was dealing with, and scheduled the next 2 meetings. My Psychologist also talked about using Antidepressants…yours may do that too, if that’s what she feels you need. After the first meeting, if you can drive, you are free to come to the office alone. I’ve found that talking to my Psychologist is extremely helpful…it’s normal to be nervous, but it will help you feel better. No, there is no blood that needs to be drawn, unless a doctor is concerned that there may be another medical reason behind your symptoms. If you have anymore questions, feel free to e-mail me… live_laugh_love_737@yahoo.com. (Just make sure to write that you’re from Yahoo Answers in the subject line so I won’t delete it on accident). Hope you start feeling better!
